FACULTATY OF NAVAL ARCHITECTURE

Building a propeller concept for Yachts

Project description

The main role of the propulsion system is to deliver enough power to overcome
the ship resistance and to propel the ship at the required speed.

Before the main propulsion system selection, the ship resistance and the
required propulsive power must be estimated. The ship resistance is
particularly influenced by its speed, the dimensional and form characteristics of
the hull and its displacement. On the other hand, the main propulsion plant has
a direct effect on ship dimensions, weight, speed, fuel economy, endurance,
manoeuvrability and costs.

A large number of propulsion alternatives are feasible by the combination of

existing engines, transmition systems and propulsors.

The major criterion in the selection of the number of blades is vibration

consideration. The choosing of the number of blades, which has a common
factor with the number of cylinders of the Diesel engine, could lead to
vibrations problems. In general, highter propeller efficiency is associated with a
larger propeller diameter and lower shaft rpm.

Design of propellers for high speed meets serious difficulties due to presence of
cavitation on propeller blades. Propeller cavitation leads to undesired change
of the hydrodynamic performances, erosion, noise and vibration.

The propeller has low drag resistance , low noise and vibrations and ensures
good road stability.

Project objectives

 educating customers in using the latest generation products

 quality assurance of building materials through a modern quality
management system
 increasing customer satisfaction
 increasing production quality by using the most productive
production
 increasing the trust of existing and potential clients by offering quality
services
 the introduction of a new naval propeller concept on the market.

SWOT Analysis
This analysis offers a clear picture of the project by setting project qualities,
defects, market opportunities and threats. This is a very simple process and
provides a profound understanding of the potential and critical issues that may
affect the new project.

Cause –effect diagram (Ishikawa)

Solving problems in a team's work is often a challenge, especially if members'
opinions differ on the real cause of the problem - different and yet correctly
identified. One of the methods of analyzing complex problems that seem to
have several interdependent causes is the Ishikawa diagram.

The purpose of this analysis is represented by:

• graphically illustrating the relationship between a result and the factors that
led to its occurrence;
• an overview of the potential causes that have led to a particular problem or
effect.

PARETO Analysis
Pareto analysis is a statistic technique for classifying tasks in number but with
significant effect. It is based on the Pareto principle (also known as 80/20 rule),
which establishes that 20% of resources generate 80% of all work, or, in terms
of quality improvement, most problems (80%) have several key causes (20%).

A Pareto graph has the following objectives:

 To separate the important issues from the possible ones, so they draw
attention to their improvement.
 Set up information by priority or importance.
 To highlight the most important issues, based on in-formation and not
on opinions.
