Population Frame and Sampling Scheme

A stratified sampling was used in this study. By using stratified

sampling technique for the selection of representatives. The total number of BS

psychology students from each year level to get the proportionate sampling. The

researchers created a total sample by selecting the appropriate proportion of the

participants from each year level. It is important that the total number of samples

is determined first by using:

Slovin’s Formula

n = __N____
1 + Ne²
Where

N=total no. of BS psychology students

e=tolerate margin of error (0.05)

By year level, dividing the entire population into subpopulation is the most

reliable so that the result of the study is equally distributed and everybody has

the opportunity to be chosen.

In the 2nd semester of the year 2014-2015, the official student of BS

Psychology was retrieved from the administration office of the president in RTU.

After the sample distribution is determined, the sample distribution was able to
2

identify for each year level as shown below:

Table1. Sample Distribution of Respondents:

Year level
(BS Psychology)
2nd Sem., Enrollees % Sample
SY2014-2015

1st year 250 27 76

2nd year 225 24 67

3rd year 230 25 70

4th year 225 24 67

N=930 100% n=280

Table 1 shows the total number of BS psychology students of the Rizal

Technological University enrolled for the 2 nd semester is 930. A large percentage

of 27% (250) are first year students followed by third year students with 25%

(230) while second year and fourth year occupied 24% (225) of the entire

population. There are 76 first year students was picked, 67 from the second year

students, 70 from third year students, 67 from the fourth year students. The

sample was computed using the Slovin’s formula is 280. The sample per year

level is determined by multiplying it by percentage of each year level.

Statistical Treatment
3

To quantitatively interpret the result of the study, the following statistical

tools used by the researchers are Percentages, weighted mean, and Pearson’s

product moment Coefficient of correlation.

This formula stands for the statement of the problem number one (i.e.

What is the demographic profile of BS Psychology students?)

1. Percentage- was utilized to determine the quantitative relations for the whole

respondents as shown below

.
P= _f_ 100
N

Where:

P= percentage

f= for the frequency counts

N= the overall population

For the statement of the problem z

2. Weighted Mean- is used to get the average of the overall respondents from

the tabulated data distribution. Statically calculated, as shown below:

Where:

X̅= X-bar; mean

Σ= the Greek letter sigma: summation

4

X= scores

N= number of scores

To answer partially the statement of the problem number 4 (i.e., Is there a

significant relationship between the correlation of belief in luck to self-esteem?)

3. Pearson’s Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation- r is used to

measure the strength of a linear association between the two variables. As

shown below:

Where:

n= sample size

Σxy= sum of the product of x and y

Σx Σy= product of the sum of x and y

Σy2=sum of squares of y

Σχ2= sum of squares of x

Σx= sum of x

Σy=sum of y
