her arrival, Igor, a young lieutenant falls for her. There she also meets Vitas – the love of her
life, who works as a nuclear engineer. Lera dreams of a big family but the events that took
place in April of 1986 irrevocably change the lives of them all.

Celebrating the airing of Chernobyl: Aftermath, a Ukrainian series about an impossible love
set against the backdrop of the 1986 nuclear disaster, we show you the key elements that
derived in the accident and its consequences:
1. Low Power and little communication

The accident, which occurred at reactor 4 of the plant in the early morning of April
26, 1986, resulted when operators took action in violation of the plant’s procedures.
Operators ran the plant at very low power, without adequate safety precautions and
without properly coordinating or communicating the procedure with safety personnel.
2. Sudden Heat Increase

The power surge caused a sudden increase in heat, which ruptured some of the
pressure tubes containing fuel. The hot fuel particles reacted with water and caused
a steam explosion, which lifted the 1,000-metric-ton cover off the top of the reactor,
causing a second explosion and exposing the reactor core to the environment. The
fire burned for 10 days, releasing a large amount of radiation into the atmosphere.
3. Different Characteristics
The reactor built at Chernobyl is an RBMK reactor, which was never built by any
country outside the USSR because it had characteristics that were rejected
everywhere outside the Soviet Union. The most important of these features was its
inherent instability, especially on startup and shutdown. The reactor used graphite
where American reactors use water. Thirty-one people died within a few weeks of the
accident from the initial steam explosion, exposure to radiation and thermal burns,
and one due to cardiac arrest.

become popular, but false, about the explosion and its consequences.
1. Mutant Creatures
It is of popular belief the idea of nuclear radiation causing severe mutations in
animals and people has been a long-established idea, although one with little
scientific foundation. During 60 years of research, science has not registered any
genetic mutations connected with radiation. What is more, 20 years after the
Chernobyl tragedy, the International Commission on Radiological Protection, seeing
that there are no reasons to believe of potential genetic risks, downgraded the
related risks by 90%.
2. Nature Damage
If you believe that after the explosion there is nothing left in and around Chernobyl
and Pripyat, you’re wrong. In fact, the exclusion zone is one of the few places on
earth that had become wilder as the years go by. A documentary filmed by 4 News
from the UK, proved that wildlife is booming in the area, with the appearance of
species like the lynx, and even the proof of a brown bear… the only one that has been
spotted in Ukraine.

3. Chaotic evacuation
Thanks to the portrayal of the USSR in the western world, many people believe that a
significant number of people died because of the explosion due to a lack of
coordination and resources in the region. In fact, the evacuation of nearly 120,000
people was done quickly and professionally despite its urgency. It is also untrue that
people received large radiation doses during the evacuation and suffered life-
threatening mutations. To this day, there have been cases of people returning to
their old homes to live there, some of them even reaching more than 80 years of age.

Saint Sophia’s Cathedral

Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is an outstanding complex; work started on it in 1037 and lasted
for just three years. As the architectural monument has had only a few reconstructions,
you can marvel at the Byzantine cathedral in close to its original form. In addition, as it is
located at the intersection of the four leading roads in Kyiv, climb to the cathedral’s bell
tower and you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view from the top.
Mikhail Bulgakov Museum

The literary and memorial museum is devoted to the famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov, who
was born in Kyiv. From 1906 to 1919, he lived in this house while writing his book The
White Guard. Bulgakov included the building and land next to it and the internal layout of
the house is exactly the same as described in his novel.
National Art Museum of Ukraine

The exposition of the National Art Museum of Ukraine includes masterpieces of Ukrainian
paintings and sculpture, dating back to the times of Kievan Rus (the federation of East
Slavic tribes from the 9th to 13th centuries). The museum currently has about 40,000
exhibits and has one of the richest collections of ancient iconostases in Ukraine.
Ukraine in Brief
Located in Eastern Europe, Ukraine is the largest country entirely within Europe. The
region was first populated by the Varangians, as East Slavs and Greeks used to name the
Vikings. The region was then ruled by different powers such as the Golden Horde, the
Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Kingdom of Poland.
Later on, Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire and after the two World Wars,
the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was formed as a puppet state of the Soviet Union.
Ukraine became independent again when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.

Murder of James Bulger

Probably the most heinous and remembered crime in Britain’s modern history, the murder of
James Bulger shocked an entire generation. James Bulger, three-years-old at the time, was
murdered in February 1993 by two ten-year-old boys who lured him away from a Liverpool
shopping arcade while his mother was distracted. The boys, Robert Thompson and Jon
Venables led the toddler to a railway track. They used bricks and sticks to beat and torture
him and finally killed him by repeatedly dropping a 22lbs piece of steel railway track on his
head.
Thompson and Venables were tried and convicted, becoming the youngest murderers ever in
British history.
Murder of Birna Brjánsdóttir

Iceland is known as one of the most peaceful countries in the world. Its crime rate is
amongst the lowest and murder is so rare that when it happens, it shocks. Birna Brjánsdóttir

lived with her father in the Reykjavík suburb of Breiðholt. On Friday night, 13 January 2017,
she went out with friends to Húrra, a club in the city centre; she left alone three hours after
them. After a friend and co-worker at Hagkaup called her parents and it became apparent
she had not returned home or contacted them, first her mother and then the police
appealed for help finding her; the search over the next week was the largest manhunt in
Iceland, 800 people volunteering.
On 22 January her body was found washed up near the Selvogsviti lighthouse on the coast of
the Reykjanes peninsula, more than 40 km (26 miles) away from where she disappeared. She
was naked and the autopsy established her cause of death as drowning, but bruising also
indicated she had been strangled and hit in the face. In September that year, a Greenlandic
fisherman, Thomas Møller Olsen, was found guilty of her murder.
Murder of Meredith Kercher

Meredith Kercher was a British student on exchange from the University of Leeds while she
was murdered in Perugia, Italy. Kercher was found dead on the floor of her bedroom. By the
time the bloodstained fingerprints at the scene were identified as belonging to a man called
Rudy Guede, police had charged the victim’s flatmate, an American student also on
exchange called Amanda Knox, and Knox's boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. The following
prosecutions of Knox and Sollecito received international publicity, with forensic experts and
jurists taking a critical view of the evidence supporting the initial guilty verdicts.
