Sueata Case Study

1. Discharge teaching- Since she does not plan on breast feeding she needs to wear a well
fitted bra for support. She should use ice packs to relieve discomfort from engorgement.
Avoid handling breast and do not express milk. Non feeding engorgement will subside in
24-36bhr. Uterine changes may occur such as cramps and after pains. This is normal.
There will be normal vaginal discharge which can last up to 4 weeks. The color will
change from bright red to brownish tan. Your period will resume in approximately 6-8
weeks. Take a sitx bath to care for episiotomy. Stitches will dissolve in one to three
weeks. Use mild analgesic for pain. Continue taking prenatal iron and vit pills until
postpartum visit. You should rest and avoid heavy housework and exercise for two
weeks. You should have a postpartum visit in 6 weeks.
2. The nurse should respond to this by talking to Sueata and finding out what’s wrong. She
may be experiencing some emotional changes which could be an identifier for
postpartum depression. She should offer Sueata emotional support and try to find out if
she has a support system at home.
3. The nurse should approach this subject by finding out what Sueata is experiencing
emotionally. Sueata probably feels alone since she has not had contact with the father
of her child in 2 months. Sueata is also in school and is most likely nervous about how
she is going to be able to do all of it on her own. The nurse should give her some
information about adoption so that Sueata can figure out if that is the best option for
her.
4. This could be somewhat likely. Since Sueata is having a child out of wedlock and her
child was not a son the family may not accept this and behave in a violent way.
5. The nurse should give Sueata resources that can protect her. It may be a good idea to
prolong her discharge so she can find somewhere safe to live.
6. When it comes to childbearing it is said that nothing should stop a woman from
becoming pregnant even if they are poor. It is believed that god provides the food so
that the mother does not need to worry about feeding her children. Also, it is preferred
for women to give birth to boys rather than girls.
7. The baby will have United States Citizenship.
8. Birth Control is only accepted by her culture while she is caring for her newborn child.
Sueata could go on the pill or use oral contraceptives
9. Sueata needs to wear a supportive bra since she is not breast feeding. She should also
avoid touching her breast to prevent milk from being released. She can take pain meds
such as advil for breast engorgement
10. Check the expiration date, wash your hands before preparing. Bottles should be
sterilized when using for the first time. To prepare formula you will need to add water to
the formula. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use. You can
use tap or bottled water. Formula should be stored in the fridge. Any formula that’s
been in the fridge for many than 48 hours should be discarded.
