Imagine a fairground that runs off your energy. A high octane car-
nival that’s a cross between a night at the circus and the thrill of the
funfair.
Once through the gateway the audience, transported to a world of
fairground folk with fantastic tales, are free to roam, following the
performers from location to location and enjoying the array of cus-
tom fairground rides all made from recycled materials. In the true
spirit of climate change all the energy to operate the rides comes
form the patrons of the funfair....even the lighting.
A globascope, a ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, or a visit to the
fairground fortune teller, are all activities on offer, the funfair,
the carnival, theatre and circus all rolled into one fantastic specta-
cle that is Sensazione!
Laika is an international theatre company based in Antwerp that
creates a ’theatre of the senses’. Time Circus, also from Antwerp,
specialise in building innovative theatre machines.
The Sensazione tour of Ireland is a co-production between Cork

East Cork Area Development

Community Support Scheme
Details of a Community Support Scheme, amounting to a national
allocation of 5 million, were announced recently by Ministers
Eamon Ryan and Eamon O’Cuiv. The scheme has been established
following a recommendation by the Report Of The Independent

This scheme is not ordinarily directed at commercial salmon fish-

and employees in the processing and ancillary sectors in commu-
nities where commercial salmon fishing has been a well-estab-
lished activity, and where its withdrawal impacts on the economic
and social fabric of the community.
East Cork Area Development Ltd. will administer the Scheme for
the South and East Cork area. The area covered by ECAD spans
two fishery districts ie. parts of Cork and Lismore. The amount
available for ECAD’s area as part of the Community Support
Scheme is 170,000. Additional resources in the form of match-
ing funding will be required to deliver certain projects.
The funding may be used to support the following type of projects:
• Re-training of the people previously involved in drift / draft net
salmon fishing
• Re-training of people previously involved in ancillary activities
associated with the commercial wild salmon fishery
• Diversification into non salmon fishing economic activity
• Diversification from ancillary activities previously dependant on
the wild salmon fishery
• Education and employment preparation
• Projects to promote the quality of the coastal environment
• Any other appropriate community projects

Authorities Must do More Transition Awards Night
for Youghal Beaches
Sinn Fein Councillor, Martin Hallinan has called on the govern-
ment and the local authorities to be more proactive in promoting
Youghal beaches as safe, environmentally friendly, and attractive
for visitors.
Reacting to the recent EP A "Quality of Bathing Report"
Councillor Hallinan said that "if Youghal is to regain its deserved
blue flag status then both the government and the local authorities
are going to have to be a lot more proactive in promoting the
Youghal and adjoining beaches as safe, environmentally friendly
and attractive to visitors."
"Last year 1 put a motion before Cork County Council calling for
urgent action on upgrading the sewage system. I pointed out that
we had long past the deadline of 2006 for works to be done to meet
Teachers Tommy and Ann O’Brien, Principal Seamus O’Ceallachain and Marina
EU requirements. The existing system was and is totally inade- Cusack with TY Grads
quate to cope with the expanding population of Youghal with dire
consequences for the residents of Gallagher’s Terrace and with
potential consequences for our beaches. Yet the government were
slow in allocating the funds and there appeared to be a certain lack
of urgency on behalf of Cork County Council."

Minister and the County Manager should now approach this crisis
with considerably more urgency and fast-track the whole process
of providing a new sewage system."I have been campaigning for
many years for adequate and accessible toilet facilities by the
beach. I note that one week after the EPA report, Youghal Town
Council failed to open the toilets at Claycastle on the May Bank

Youghal Pigeon Club

On Saturday 17th May, our race was from Monaghan. This was
our first Federation race where we competed against all Munster
pigeon fanciers.
The birds were released at 8.00 am and it turned out to be a very
straight race with heavy losses by some fanciers and others getting
good returns.
No one can pin point the reason for this as weather conditions
were ok. Even our senior fanciers are at aloss to explain why we
had such a difficult race and even came up with a few unbeliev-
able excuses, not printable, as to what happened.
The full result is as follows: 1st Paddy Hehir, 2nd Billy Hehir, 3rd
Pat Parker, 4th Billy Hehir, 5th Pat Parker.

The Youghal Lifeboat was launched at 13.40 Hrs on Sunday 18th
May to the aid of a local pleasure craft which had broken down
and was drifting towards the rocks at Capel Island. There was four
people on board. Youghal Lifeboat under the command of John
Innes and crew members David Slattery and Denise Goggin
arrived on scene at 13.55 Hrs and quickly established the tow.
They then proceeded to tow the vessel safely back to Youghal
Harbour.
The Lifeboat was refueled, rehoused and ready for service again at
14.30 Hrs.

VIA @ THE PRIORY CELEBRATES ITS 1ST BIRTHDAY!

It has been quite a year for the Via team. Fergal and Jo opened the
coffee shop and deli on the ground floor of The Priory in March
last year. Luigi and Giovanni arrived from Italy in May (they
quickly realised that Irish May weather was slightly different to
Italian May weather!) and the first floor restaurant opened in June.
The restaurant has gone through some changes in its first year,
however, the ethos still remains the same, the crucial emphasis on
local and seasonal, in the importance of time, tradition and fami-
ly. Head chef Luigi Camilleri trained with some of the finest
Italian chefs during his time in London, including Georgio
Locatelli. Luigi now recreates Italian recipes with local, Irish
ingredients with a distinctly Irish feel, e.g. slow-roasted Duroc
pork belly served with apple mashed potato and savoy cabbage!

Luigi’s Seasonal Recipes

This is a typical Sicilian recipe; it can be eaten hot or cold and will
fill your home with typical summer Sicilian flavour. These toma-
toes are ideal for picnics, finger food, and canapØs or as a
"Contorno" with meat or fish

Baked Sicilian Stuffed Tomatoes

Serves 4
Preparation time 50 minutes
6 plum tomatoes 200 grams fresh bread crumbs
2 garlic gloves, chopped
1 tbsp chopped mint1 tbsp chopped parsley
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper1 tsp salt
3 tbsp grated parmesan cheese or pecorino
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 small onion, chopped

Wash tomatoes and cut in half length ways, scoop out the seeds
and pulp and set them upside down to drain, keep the seeds and
pulp in a cup.Place the breadcrumbs, parmesan, herbs, onions,
garlic, salt, pepper and the tomato pulp with seeds in a bowl mix
well together with 3 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.If the mix-
ture looks too dry add some more oil, fill each tomato with this
mixture and arrange the them in a lightly oiled baking tray, driz-
zle with olive oil and roast for about a half hour or until the bread-
crumbs are browned.
You can add anchovies, olives and capers to the ingredients to give
extra flavour or give it a twist adding mozzarella or feta cheese.
Usually I make more mixture then needed so I can top up my
tomatoes with some extra filling!

Youghal Hosts Major

Conference on Public Realm
Experts in the field of regenerating historic cities and towns
throughout Ireland and the UK shared their experiences at a major
conference in Youghal’s Town Hall on Thursday 15th and Friday
16th May.
Supported by The Heritage Council of Ireland, Cork County
Council and Youghal Town Council this conference was funded
through the County Heritage Plan and looked at the application of
public realm strategies in Ireland.
Catherine Desmond, Archaeologist, Department of Environment,
Heritage & Local Government and Youghal Heritage Committee
commented: Town Clerk Liam Ryan pictured with Councillors and Officials
"Youghal is a most fitting venue for this conference being one of
the finest examples of a walled town in Europe. We have set out
a vision for the 21st Century that envisages the development of the
town as high quality, safe, urban environment, attractive to
investors, employees, and residents. Youghal is facing a new era of
development and transformation. We are now also finally starting
to realise our enormous tourism potential attracting an increasing
number of international visitors".
Youghal Town Council undertook the innovative step of develop-
ing a Heritage-Led Regeneration Plan along with a Public Realm
Plan for the historic core of the town. The protection of public
realm has determined the need for the delivery of the most effec-
tive presentation, management and development of a town’s pub-
lic realm with particular reference to the Historic Town.
The conference was designed to provide information to local
authorities, planners, engineers, architects, private developers and
consultants. Its concept emanated directly from the Youghal
Heritage Committee who worked closely with the County Heritage
Forum to find the support and funding to make it a reality.

Our weekly training sessions which continue each Friday night for
U8, U10 & U12 here in the GAA pitch in Clashmore, new players

for all young ladies in the under 10 age group we can now confirm

training on Friday night please. Also please note anyone wishing to

Death of Kathleen Kenneally
With deep sadness we record the death of Mrs Kathleen Kenneally
Florida, her death occurred on May 18th Kathleen was the last sur-
viving member of the Nugent family Old Parish having been prede-
ceased by her sister Eileen Scully just a few months. A sister of the
late Pat Nugent Tinnock, Kathleen is survived by her sons Pat and
Sean and her daughter Maura, and a wide circle of relatives and
friends to whom we tender our deepest sympathy. Kathleen’s funer-
al will take place in Old Parish at a later date.

Holy Communion in Piltown
On Saturday May 17th five boys all pupils of second class in
Kinsalebeg National School received the sacrament of first Holy
Communion in St Bartholomew’s church in Piltown. Our thanks to

On Thursday May 29th Clashmore National welcomes all pupils

The Rising Sun Ring Tournament
-In aid of Hospice
It would be easier to pick a winner in the National than to back a
winner in this years Rising Sun Ring Tournament, as we approach
the final rounds of this years competition. As in previous years all
the proceeds of this event will be given to Hospice.
Last Sunday night we had a very exciting game between Paul Marks
team and Michael Rocky Cashel’s crew, The winners here after a
very exciting game were Paul Marks Pa McCarthy and Michelle
Keogh, Pa McCarthy was in winning form on the night securing
victory in the first game, when he hung the winning ring in the first
hand. Bring hung the two ones with his first and second rings in the
second game to keep his team in the game. Michelle did her part for
team in the final round when she hung the winning ring after a tight
battle leaving the tournament favourites over Michael Cashel Brian
Dunne and the ex chairman Pad O Halloran rattled!
St Cronan’s Church Refurbishment
For the children receiving First Holy Communion on Saturday, their
families and friends this occasion was extra special as it was the
first big celebration at St Cronan’s Church since its recent refurbish-
ment. Over the past few months our dearly loved parish church has
been beautifully restored to it former glory by Fr O Gorman and his
very skilled and talented team of workers. Colour schemes and
materials in keeping with the period of the church have been used
to great advantage. Great credit is due to everyone involved in the
refurbishment thanks to all of you, our church is once again a place
in the parish we can be very proud of.

will be helping send our volunteer there! A heifer was just one of
numerous items very kindly sponsored for a fundraising auction
held recently at the Ole Mill in Kinsalebeg, The proceeds of this
auction which raised over 5000 goes towards sending Kinsalebeg
student Marta to "Maisai, Northern Thailand" in July. Daughter of
Liam and Kay Marta is one of four students travelling to Thailand
as part of the Freedom House "Hill Tribe Education Volunteer
Program"
Freedom House is a school set up to provide hill tribe and refugee
children with and education, which in turn will give them better
work opportunities. The school provides instruction in Thai and
English and children learn at their own individual pace.
Youghal Catholic Young Men’s Society marchers pass their premises in Market Square
Children involved on this programme live in slum areas and have to
work from a tender young age because they can not speak Thai and
can not afford to go to school they are stuck in a vicious circle of
poverty.
Volunteers at Freedom House give them an opportunity to change
that by teaching them Thai, then they can become active in Thai
society and seek legitimate employment, by learning English the
children are given an opportunity to work in the tourism industry as
tour guides or in hotels.
Freedom House also provides a daily healthy meal to the children as
part of the program, but this would not be possible without volun-
teers like Marta, who raise money to sponsor their trip to Thailand, The Procession approaches Market Square
along with giving them time as a volunteer out there.
Marta wants us to thank everyone who sponsored items for the auc-
tion, thanks to also our MC and auctioneer Pat "Knobber" Daly of
CRY fame, Assumpta Dalton who did trojan work behind the
scenes, who provided the music and everyone who helped in any
way especially Kieran, Suzanne and staff at the Ole Mill.
We wish Marta and her fellow students all the best in their travels.

Sometimes, when the two adult learning groups -Back to
Education and Adult Literacy- who also avail of the premises are
simultaneously present, there must persist a bustling ambience.
Yet set back from the road on, swathed in light an air, learning and

pleting some basic programmes that are Trainee Centred and
based on Modules designed by the National Council for
Vocational Awards (NCVA).
At the moment, there are no more than eight students to a class,
across the provision of Junior Cert, Leaving Cert Applied and
Fetac (Further Education Training Awards Council). The curricu-

Road Signage Must be
Improved Stanton
Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has called for better
maintenance and provision of road signage in East Cork. Deputy
Stanton has raised this matter in the Dail having noticed that
many road traffic and tourist information signs are in poor condi-
tion or obscured from view.
While most signs on main roads are clear and well maintained, I
cannot say the same for signs on country roads and in towns and
villages. As we come into the summer, visibility of signs on more
rural roads becomes and issue as hedgerows grow, and often part-
ly cover signs. While many locals are largely unaffected by this,
it must cause many problems for tourists who are unused to the
area , noted Deputy Stanton.
Both the National Roads Authority and Local Authorities
share responsibility for the provision, cleaning and maintenance
of signs on national roads and local/regional roads respective-
ly. Any costs in relation to this comes from the bodies own
resources but in the case of Local Authorities additional monies
are available from the Department of Transport.
Many areas of East Cork are already suffering from littering
and roadside dumping which affects both local people and
tourists. Broken, dirty and unclear road signs only serve to wors-
en the impression we are portraying to tourists. While illegal
dumping is difficult to combat, I see no reason why road traffic
and other signs cannot be maintained in good condition through-
out the year, especially during summer months , concluded David

Question
I understand that if I am providing full-time care to someone with
a disability I can get a Respite Care Grant. How do I get it?
Answer
The Respite Care Grant is paid once a year to certain carers of peo-
ple in need of full-time care and attention. It is paid automatically
in early June by the Department of Social and Family Affairs to
those who are getting Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Constant
Attendance Allowance or Prescribed Relative’s Allowance. It is
paid automatically by the Health Service Executive to those who
are getting Domiciliary Care Allowance.
Other carers providing full-time care have to apply. If, however,
you received the grant last year, you do not need to apply again as
the Department writes to you to verify the details. To qualify you
must be:Aged 16 or over and ordinarily resident in the State
Caring for the person on a full-time basis
Caring for the person for at least six months - this period must
include the first Thursday in June
Living with the person being cared for or, if not, be contactable
quickly by a direct system of communication, for example, tele-
phone or alarm
You do not qualify if you are working, studying or training more
than 15 hours per week outside the home, if you are getting an
unemployment payment or if you are signing on for unemploy-
ment credits. You also do not qualify if you are living in a hospi-
tal, convalescent home or similar institution. The person being
cared for must have a disability that requires full-time care and
attention and must not be receiving it from someone else. He/she
must not normally live in a hospital, convalescent home or similar
institution but may attend a non-residential training course or day
care centre. For 2008, the Respite Care Grant is 1,700 for each
person being cared for. The application form (RCG1) is available
from your local Social Welfare Office or Citizens Information
Centre. If you are caring for more than two people you will also
require a Form RCG1(a) for each additional person.Further infor-
mation is available from your local Citizens Information Centre.
Question I am travelling in Europe this summer. Am I entitled to
use public healthcare in other EU countries if I fall ill?
Answer If you are visiting certain European countries and you
become ill or get injured, the European Health Insurance Card
allows you to access public healthcare services. It replaces the
E111 form which had previously been required.
If you are going on a short stay to an EU country, an EEA country
(Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or to Switzerland, it is advisable
to have the card to cover you and your family for public health-
care. Each person travelling will need a card. It is not required for
a temporary visit to the UK if you can show that you are ordinar-
ily resident in Ireland.
You can apply for the card online at www.ehic.ie if you already
have a medical card, GP visit card or a Drugs Payment Scheme
card. Otherwise you can download an application form from this
website or get it from your Local Health Office. You will need to
provide your name, address, date of birth and Personal Public
Service Number (PPS No.).
You should apply for the card a month before travelling if possi-
ble. If there is not enough time to get the card before you travel,
contact your Local Health Office to get a Temporary Replacement
Certificate for each person travelling instead.
If you have a card that has expired, you can apply online to renew
your card. You will require your existing card number. If you have
changed your address or your name, you will need to contact your
Local Health Office. If you have concerns about getting a renewed
card in time, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate.
You may also wish to consider taking out private travel insurance
for some expenses that are not covered by the European Health
Insurance Card. These may include the costs of repatriation home
or the expenses of relatives who travel to you if you fall ill abroad.

Patrick Dawson won the first Emer Casey Central Park 5k run on
May 22nd, Conor O’Donoghue second and Jorge Pena was third.
The race was organised by Marie O Brien who works for the NY
office of MOP , a cousin of Emer s who is currently living and
working in New York, along with David Golden and Dave
Mohally, from Youghal who is also now living in the Big Apple.
While Marie and David did the organisng, Dave Mohally hosted
the post run drinks and food at his bar "Bua" located in the east vil-
lage.

MOE’S OFF- LICENCE

Two months ago Adrian Colman went into Moe’s off licence on the
1,500 HOLIDAY

DRAW North Main Street and bought some Budweiser. Last Friday night he
got his change. The ’change’ in question refers to country, climate and
probably currency however.
That same week Adrian had become the first of eight weekly winners
in a draw for customers who spent over 10. He and the other seven
names drawn from the weekly entrants qualified for a super-draw in
which Moe’s owner Garreth Last would donate a 1,500 travel vouch-
er purchased from McDonalds Travel.
Last week most of the winners were represented at Moe’s for the big
draw and enjoyed complimentary wine, cheese and sandwiches while
dreaming of exotic white beaches, turquoise seas and colourful cock-
tails sipped under palm trees many, many miles from Youghal land-
fill’s odours.
Only one of them was fated to see those dreams paid for on the night.
On hearing his name called, Adrian Coleman went into mild shock
and his eyes glazed over somewhat. "I can’t believe it. I’ve never won
anything before!", he eventually decided.

As Adrian and Aoife ponder over maps, Moe’s shop manager Wayne
Ruxton reflected on the success of the venture. "We had over a hun-
dred entries every week," he revealed, adding, "We’ll probably do
another one for Christmas."
Cork-born Gareth opened Moe’s last December. Gareth shares
responsibility for Moe’s with fiancØe Noreen and shop manager
Wayne, from Youghal. Wayne, formerly employed at Carry Out and
Aqua Blue at Carlton Wharf, has an in-depth knowledge of the off

YOUGHAL ATHLETIC CLUB

Munster Senior Championships CastleIsland 25th May
On Sunday 3 athletes from the club travelled to CastleIsland to take
part in the Munster Senior Championships.
First in to action was Nikita Savage and Emer Kelly in the Women’s
Pole Vault competition, in windy conditions the two athletes per-
formed very well, with Nikita winning the title with a new person-
al best performance of 2.70 metres which will give her great confi-
dence as she prepares for the All Ireland Schools Competition next
Saturday 31st May in Tullamore.
Emer Kelly took second place with a clearance of 2.10 metres also
a new personal best for her. Emer has improved greatly over the last
few weeks as she has only recently taken up Pole Vault and Athletes
in general and shows great potential for the future.
In the Senior Men’s High Jump Michael Healy continues his great
start to the year by adding the Munster Senior title to the Munster
Junior title win earlier this month. Michael opened the competition
at 1.65 m and had a clearance all the way to his winning jump at
1.95 a new personal best, coming on the back of his 1.94m jump last
week to break the Munster Schools Record and take the title as well.
Michael now travels to Tullamore next Saturday to compete in the
All Ireland Schools Competition in both high jump and discus.
"Pfizer" 6 mile race
Willie O Mahony was the only Youghal competitor in the race. He
finished in a very respectable time of 54:46.
"Garda" 5K race
First Youghal athlete home in a time of 17:08 was Noel Curtin. Noel
was 15th overall and 2nd O/40. Marty O Keeffe and Andrew
Nicholson were next over the line in times of 18:09 and 18:34. Solid
running from the three lads who packed in tightly together secured
the Quality Hotels team 2nd prize in category A. It was marvellous
to see Aoife Cooke "back on the road" again. She finished in an
excellent 19:07. Well done Aoife! Sylvie O Mahony who ran for
EMC on the night was our next athlete home in 21:57. Willie O
Mahony ran 25:20. Well done to all.
Ballyandreen "5"
It’s that time of year again, the start of the infamous Ballycotton
summer series! The first race of the four got underway last
Thursday night with a now to be expected huge field. Although the
forecast wasn’t promising, the evening turned out fine and the
weather did little to impede the progress of the runners. 28:38 saw
our first athlete Noel Curtin home. This was a superb time for Noel
and all the sweeter as the season is only beginning. Watch this space
as Noel will be putting those times on a serious diet over the com-
ing months! Yet again Marty O Keeffe and Andrew Nicholson were
the next to clock in. Their times were 30:09 and 31:41 respectively.
This was a fantastic achievement for the lads who have been train-
ing diligently over the last few months. A sub 30 is sure to be the
goal before the end of the summer! Kieran Curley and Niamh Walsh
battled shoulder to shoulder for the last stretch! Kieran just shaved
it in 34:47 with Niamh only a second behind. Well done to Niamh
who was 7th lady overall. It was great to see 13 athletes from the
club competing on the night. Many of these are certain to go on and
complete the series. The rest of the times are as follows: Eamon
Flanagan 36:38, Pat Arnott 37:40, Robert Hamill 38:20, Gordon
Nicholson 40:00, Willie O Mahony 42:40. Well done to Evet Arnott
who ran her first 5 miler of the year in 49:08.
Ladies’ run on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 from Tides car park.
Mens’ run from the same venue on Fridays at 7:30. All are welcome
regardless of ability. Beginners especially welcome.
Juvenile News
On 18th May a number of our younger athletes travelled to the CIT
in Cork to participate in Day 3 of the County Championships. The
relays were held on this day and also the 2 x team events which
were qualifying events for the Munster Championships; these were
held in the U/10, U/11 and U/12 age groups. The County B
Championships were also held. It was a long day at the track but
our athletes did themselves proud as they all won medals on the day.
Boys U/10 Diarmuid Clancy and Sean Broderick. 300m - Ist Team
, 60M - 2nd Team; Padraig McCarthy and Darragh Slattery. Ball
throw - 5th, Long Jump - 7th. The 300m, 60m and Ball Throw
teams have qualified for the Munsters.

- 4th Team. Long Jump - 7th Team.
County B Championships and Relays.
Boys U/13 Cian Greene and Daniel Smiddy put in great perform-
ances to win Gold Medals in the Sprint Relay and the team shot
competition. Both of these lads teamed up with Ross Donovan and
Adam Malone to run a very good relay and finished in 3rd place.
However following the disqualification of the Leevale team they
obtained second place and went home with silver relay medals.
Girls U/13 Niamh McCarthy and Aisling Daly again put in very
good performances to win gold medals in the team long jump and
shot competitions.
Girls u/12 Jennifer Geary teamed up with Lauren O’ Mahoney and
both did very well in the Shot where they won gold medals. In the
Long Jump they won silver medals. Well done girls.
The relay team were very unfortunate not to win medals as they
were in the top placings for most of the relay. Heather Curley,
Cassie O’ Brien, Jennifer Geary and Zoe Goggin ran in the relay.
Boys U/10 and Boys U/11 Padraig McCarthy and Darragh Slattery
won the Long Jump to win the gold medals. Padraig McCarthy
teamed up with Conor Forde and won the Ball throw U/11 compe-
tition with some very good throws.
The Boys U/10 relay came third to win bronze medals. This was a
very good performance for the lads especially for Darragh Slattery
and Padraig McCarthy who were running a relay on the track for the
forst time. The Boys U/11 reached the final having qualified from
the heats. The standard in this age group was extremely high as a
lot of Cork lads have won Munster and National Sprint medals in
this age group in the Indoors. The Youghal team did very well to
finish in 6th place in the final and all lads ran extremely well.
Girls U/15 The girls u/15 relay team of Emma Flavin, Emma
Hennessy, Niamh Daly and Ciara Broderick-Farrelly ran a very
good relay race and obtained the bronze medals on the day.
BOYS U/18 Our U/18 team of Aaron Kenny, David Ryan, Eamon
O’ Regan and Micheal Cronin won silver medals in the 4x100 and
the 4x400 relays. It was great to see this age group competing espe-
cially for the younger athletes.
FORTHCOMING EVENTS.
Munster Championships - Weekend of 7th and 8th June at
Templemore for age groups u/10 to U/14. The above mentioned
teams have all been entered and also U/13 and u/14 boys and girls
in their events as requested.
National Schools - Saturday 30th May.
Athletes from the club who have qualified for their schools include
Nikita Savage for Pole vault and 300m, Michael Healy for Discus
and High Jump, Ray Kelly for Pole Vault and Patricia Curtin for
Javelin. Very best of luck to these athletes who will be travelling to
Tullamore next Sunday.
TRAINING
Training has been altered to Tuesday and Thursday nights at seven
in Tower Park. Pole Vault is also in Tuesday nights at eight o’ clock
in the GAA hall.

Special Social Groups’ consisting of 104 runners and carers and
comprising teams from locations in Hungary, Czech Republic, FOUNDATION PROJECT
Poland, Romania and Ukraine.
A mixture of physically and mentally disabled and largely from
deprived backgrounds, they have been engaged in a 10-year proj-
ect with unwieldy title, ’Integrative Meetings of Friends’, since
1999. Every summer they run a series of 2 km relays in European
countries, through which they seek to "promote broader integra-
tion of the disabled into societies, improve mental and physical fit-
ness and develop friendships," says Austrian Jerzy Chrabek, a 64
year-old remedial worker and tour organiser.
Over time the teams evolve, with participants leaving and being
replaced by others. Different countries join and depart also over
the years. Accommodation usually consists of a pre-arranged

SHOWCASE
A sunny May Monday evening welcomed audiences to the open-
ing night of the Chatterbox summer showcase which was held last
week in the Mall Arts Centre, Youghal. Girls and boys from the
Chatterbox school entertained full houses on both nights of the
show. After the official opening speech given by Mayor David
Savage, the curtains drew back revealing six dancers tapping their
toes to the song the best is yet to come . That certainly was the
case. As the song continued, we saw more dancers take to the Amanda de Bhiel, CÆit GairnØir, Brian Lotty, Heather N Dhonnchœ, Frank
stage adding their own unique style of dance. The crescendo of the Delaney and Christian N DhœnÆin
song saw 26 students dance in unison to an opening number that
set the standard for the rest of the show.
Each class had their moment in the spotlight. It was hard to
believe that some children were performing for the first time on
stage! Their smiles and energy aptly concealed any hidden anxi-
ety, leaving tears the reserve of the proud parents in the audience.
The colourful costumes and set, mixed with a good variety of
music from numerous genres plus the dramatic interludes made
for an evening that entertained both young and old.
As the final curtain came down on Tuesday night, weary heads
harbouring relentless smiles epitomised the heart of Chatterbox.
When is our next show? was the question echoing backstage.

Thundercats are Go in Youghal
Youghal is set to be the most exciting location in the country this
coming June when the Thundercat European Beach Challenge
takes place from the 20th to the 22nd. On water, on land and in the
air, the thousands that attend are promised world-class entertain-
ment for the entire family. For the first time ever in Ireland top
international Thundercat teams will race right on the shoreline,
giving spectators a powerboating experience they can almost
reach out and touch. Unusually, for an Irish outdoor event, weath-
er conditions are not an issue - if the weather is great then every-
one will enjoy a balmy, yet exciting weekend at the beach in
Youghal, but if the weather is in any way inclement then the
Thundercat spectacle gets even more exciting. In short, whatever
the weather - Youghal is going to be the place to be.
Continuing the family-friendly theme of the weekend the organis-
ers have packed a huge supporting festival into the three days of
the event. The largest firework display ever seen in these parts will
kick off proceedings on the Friday night, preceded by a free out-
door concert by ’Abbaesque’ and a parade by the Thundercats - all
right in the centre of Youghal town. Daytime on Saturday and
Sunday the action moves to Claycastle Beach (1 mile from the
town) where an exciting programme of land, sea and air displays
will keep all ages entertained from 10am each morning until 7pm
each evening. And if that’s not enough, then there’s also a great
boatshow, plus a food and craft market. In the evening the action
moves back into the centre of Youghal with even more great free
concerts and street entertainment. To make life easy for the thou-
sands expected to attend, there will be a full park and ride service
in place with shuttle buses transferring visitors from designated
parking locations to the main event site and Youghal town centre.
This year’s event is completely free to the public and huge thanks
are extended to Cork County Council, Youghal Town Council,
Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group and the business
community in Youghal for providing the funding required to make
an event of this enormous scale possible.
Thundercats began life as surf-rescue boats in South Africa where
they were the only boats that could go out into the wild Southern
Ocean waves to rescue surfers. Following a eureka moment from
some of the rescue crews, these small inflatable craft started rac-
ing in the surf just off the beach. They are now raced all over the
World, from South Africa to Australia, New Zealand, all over

on to the beach at full speed. This is the first powerboat race to be
held in Ireland under the guidance of the Irish Sailing
Association’s (ISA) new Motorboat Division, and it is fitting that
Thundercats will kick-off what promises to be an exciting new era
for Irish watersports. Exciting, challenging and great fun,
Thundercats look set to become a regular sight in Irish waters,
with many new Irish teams expected to be tempted into the series
due to their relatively low cost of purchase.
While this year will be one of the largest free public events in the
country, the potential for Youghal is even greater. The town is cur-
rently in the running to become the location for the Northern
European leg of the Powerboat P1 World Championship. This is
one of the biggest sporting events in the world with a global tele-
vision reach of 2.2 billion and an expected attendance of 150,000
spectators a day. If Youghal is successful then it would play host
to the event for five years, starting in 2009. The potential benefits,
not just to Youghal but the entire South-East coastline from
Waterford City right down into Cork Harbour, are staggering -
global media focus, direct economic impact of more than 260
million, job creation and a massive tourism influx. P1 is the water-
based equivalent to Formula 1 Racing with all of the associated
glitz and glamour - pits, tented villages, VIP’s, concerts, interna-
tional fashion shows and parties, etc. This is truly an exciting time
for Youghal, and the people of the region are invited to come along
this June 20th to 22nd to witness an amazing spectacle - and to be
able to say that they were there right at the start!

that St Ita’s have held this event
and it proved to be a very suc-
cessful event indeed. With so

the event committee had to add a

success. Club Chairman Sean Harnedy then spoke briefly about
the club and success in the year gone by and how the club was
delighted at the amount of support they had received from every-
one and from all who took part in the Golf Classic which was one
of the main fundraising events of the colander year for St Ita’s.
Richard McCarthy spoke on behalf of the mains sponsors to the
event were delighted to be associated with this classic, they were

ART CAMP MOVES TO NEW
VENUE FOR SUMMER 2008
The hugely successful community based art camp run by Diane
Magee and Jeni Dorrian Lee has been running in Youghal since
1995. Until this year the art camp has ran in Colaiste Eoin(Now
The College of Further Education and Youth Reach). "Over the
last 12 years we have had the privilege of working with many of
the same children, some of which have attended from age 5 to
12yrs and have even returned after that to help out! It’s no surprise
that we have an emotional attachment to the camp/school and
pride ourselves on the high standard of work produced every year"
says Diane.
Summer Art Camp 08 has brought with it some new changes! This
year the camp will be held in our local secondary school Pobail
Scoil na Trionoide. As a new school it offers fantastic facilities,
which include two art rooms located beside each other on the

Presentation of Certificates
On Tuesday 6th May at the Walter Raleigh Hotel
The Youghal Branch of the Red Cross Society was host to the
presentation of certificates to participants of an Occupational First
Aid Course given by Pat McCarthy at Pobalscoil na Trionoide.
On behalf of the Youghal Branch, Elaine Mulcare (Hon.
Chairperson) welcomed the Cork Area Chairman Denis Twomey
and expressed her appreciation at his support and dedication. She
also welcomed the course participants and praised them for their Janet Twomey, Regional Co-Ordinator of Trocaire pictured with top collector
commitment to finishing a tasking course. She also mentioned the Johann Brosnan
high esteem that the Red Cross certification in First Aid carries
worldwide, stressing the international recognition for the Red
Cross symbol and what it stands for.
Denis Twomey congratulated all those present who had attended
the course and reminded them that a lot of First Aid is common
sense but doing a course gives a person the confidence to act when
others hesitate to get involved. Doing a course also means that you
have practice and this makes you competent at what you do. He
added that very often it may be a family member or close friend
that you are called on to give first aid.
As a follow up to doing a basic first aid course Denis Twomey
reminded people that they could further their expertise by joining
the local branch of the Red Cross and take part in duties at sports
events and help out in the community: For example, a member Janet Twomey, Regional Co-Ordinator of Trocaire pictured with 4A1 Students who
always helps out at the Blood Bank. To further their skills they organised the Trocaire 24 Hour Fast
could also do an emergency First Responder Course or do a course
in Hand Care. Unit members also take part in competitions and it
is hoped that the local unit will be reactivated shortly.
Denis Twomey also gave some insight into how the Red Cross was
responding to International disasters such as Burma and the area
hit by the Tsunami. He congratulated the instructor Pat McCarthy
on his classe’s achievement and then went on to present the certs.

Festival Highlights
The Central Gallery - A themed exhibition of work by local,
national and international professional artists of high note. The
theme this year goes by the title of ’The Lost Summer’.
Walking Gallery - By using the shop and business windows
along the Main Street of Youghal, a mile long Gallery is created in
which a variety of visual art forms can be viewed. Works by local,
national and international artists.
Artist Development Workshops - A one day development course
aimed at the semi-professional and professional artist of Cork
County will be held with a focus career development. Guest tutor
will be Sarah Searson.
Children’s Workshop days - A programme of workshops for
children where children can experiment with a variety of art skills
in a series of artist led workshops.
Windy Lane Puppet Theatre -A Shadow Puppet Show and stage
has been created to a very high standard. The show is based on
music by the Beetles and other favorite classics and is aimed at
children from 0-99 years.
Youghal Carpets The Final Days - This is an exhibition creat-
ed by local Artist Marcella Reardon and Derek Spiers initially for
the Triskle Gallery in Cork. It chronicles the final days before the
closure of this historic company which has employed so many
Youghal people over the years.
Youth Film Festival - Saturday 26th July from 6pm the 5 youth
groups show a series of short films created by themselves.
Inter Schools Art Competition - During the course of the summer
term 5 local primary schools will encourage all children to enter
this competition. The children will be asked to paint or draw a pic-
ture using the title of ’Reasons to be cheerful’. The winning entries
in this competition will be on display in the Youghal Town Library
during the month of July.
Liam O’Leary Exhibition - Liam O’Leary was the co-founder of
the Irish Film Society. The festival committee has been
approached by Liam’s sister who holds much of his published his-
tory including photographs of him and by him and newspaper
clippings tracing his career and role in Irish Film culture.
The Youghal Visual Arts Festival held the official launch of this
year’s festival. This follows months of hard work put in by the
committee to create a programme of events to delight and enter-
tain all.
The programme includes a host of attractions from quality art by
professional local, national and international artists in the Central
Gallery to an exhibition of children’s work by the winners of the
inter primary schools competition. Not forgetting the spectacular
’Walking Gallery’ where the Main Street of Youghal is transformed
into an enthralling gallery experience.
The much acclaimed Youghal Carpets Exhibition by local artist
Marcella Reardon and fellow artist Derek Spiers makes a wel-
come debut in Youghal. The exhibition is a photographic chroni-
cle of the final weeks of the world famous Youghal Carpets
Factory before its closure in 2007.
In recognition of the contribution made by local man Liam
O’Leary to the founding of the Irish Film Society in 1936, a sam-
ple of his work will be on display.
If this is not enough to keep you interested there is an extensive
programme of artist led workshops for the children and even a
couple for the family. There will be the chance to experience a
wide range of art media from pastel to paint, sand and even shav-
ing foam.
As a special treat for the whole family why not come and see the
unique and captivating show by the local Windy Lane Puppet
Theatre. Two free shows will be held for all to enjoy with music
by the Beatles and other popular favourites this show is sure to
entertain all children from 1 - 101+ years of age.
Keeping on the local theme, five local Youth groups from the

Youghal area will hold a Film Gala night where they will show-
case a selection of short films produced by the groups themselves.
For those more serious about art and creating it there will be a one
day workshop held by Sarah Searson in which she will be able to
guide and advise the new and developing professional artist
through the minefield of Artist Promotion.
All in all the Youghal Visual Arts Festival will be an exciting and
inspiring week for everyone!

With the building excitement of the upcoming ’Thundercats
Powerboat Weekend’ soon to hit our shores, Youghal Visual Arts
Festival will be opening an Arts and Crafts Shop to raise vitally
needed funds for the festival.

aided by the breeze in the second half and fought hard to earn a

Youghal team who gave it their all before Nemo ran up 3 or 4
quick points midway through the second half to give them a bit
of daylight. Overall a pleasing performance for the selectors.

The long awaited intercounty Championship season is upon us at
last and applications for tickets for the upcoming Hurling Game
between Cork and Tipp in the Park are invited as follows. Cork v
Tipperary Munster Senior Hurling Championship Sunday 8th
June. Applications are invited in writing only and can be deliv-
ered to the post box at Copperalley or Club Aras no later than
9pm Thursday 29th of May. Please indicate which type of ticket
you are applying for i.e. Stand, Terrace, Family, Student, etc. The
club will have a limited allocation of tickets from the County
Board and there will be disappointments due to circumstances
outside of the clubs control.

YOUGHAL 2-1 V KILLEAGH 3-0 20/05/2008
The Youghal U8 team played their first match of the year on
Tuesday last. They were pitched against neighbouring Killeagh.
The first half saw a more experienced Killeagh dominate with 3
goals despite valiant defending by the Youghal boys. The Goal
tally would have been greater but for the hard work of backs such
as Kyle Brown, Rory McSweeney and Colm Breslan. Youghal
nerves settled in the second half and the momentum shifted leav-
ing most of the play in the Killeagh half. The midfield pairing of
Jake O’ Brien and Liam Ansbro Moylan put in 2 goals and a point
to make the final quarter a cliff hanger. An inspirational svae from
Youghal Goal keeper Ben Dalton gave further impetus to the
Youghal effort, however a resilient Killeagh held onto a two point
margin at the end. Based on this performance and given that this
was the first ever match for most of the Youghal lads great things
are expected from this Team over the coming years. Team: Ben

KILLEAGH 4-6 V YOUGHAL 2-6 23/05/2008
This had all the makings of a great contest, Killeagh had reached
the final of the FØile Competition and Youghal have been going
well in the league to date. The game started out competitively and
remained a tight and fast paced game for the opening quarter with
nothing between the sides, but after this things started to go
wrong. Through no fault of their own or lack of effort Youghal
were always chasing this game. The performance of the man in
the middle and the biased shown left both camps scratching their
heads. What should have been a cracker was ruined by the refer-
ee. Youghal had two goals disallowed for very questionable deci-
sions and on the other hand Killeagh were awarded a goal for a
clear cut square ball. Youghal were still in this going into the last
few minutes with only a goal in it when the referee awarded a
penalty to a young Killeagh lad who lost his balance trying to
kick the ball with nobody within touching distance. The kick was
brilliantly saved by Dillon Mason but for the referee asking it to
be taken again for reasons only known to him. This time the
Killeagh taker held his nerve and buried the penalty. Killeagh
were the better team on the night but both camps went home dis-
satisfied with the evening. Hopefully we will meet again later in
the year when we are sure to see a classic game between two very
competitive teams.

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL

A colour proposal for the streets of Youghal

Youghal Town Council intends to introduce a Heritage Paint Scheme for the Historic Core of
the Town. As part of this scheme free Architectural Advice will be given to each individual
client, together with a level of grant aid dependant on the type and size of the clients proper-
ty.

An information document is available from the offices of Youghal Town Council explaining the core prin-
cipals of the scheme. Before the scheme commences in general, Youghal Town Council intends to paint two
properties free of charge, as samples, of what the scheme intends to achieve. If you would like your proper-
ty to be considered as one of these free samples please apply now in writing to Sean McLoughlin, Town
Architect, Youghal Town Council, Mall House, Youghal before 15th June next.

The Town Architect will consider all applicants, prior to picking two to proceed with. Once these samples
properties have been finished, the general scheme will be rolled out and the individual consultations and
assessments will commence. This scheme provides the community, of the historic core with a fantastic
opportunity, to facelift the streetscape of the town.
