RING OUT IN YOUGHAL!

"Voice of Hope", a mixed choir group from Co. Antrim will per-
form a free Christmas music concert in the Mall Arts Centre,
Youghal on Saturday, 8th December at 8.30pm.
Sponsored by The Youghal Baptist Community, this performance
promises to be one of the highlights of the upcoming "I
Killeagh Choir Believe ." Youghal Christmas Festival which is taking place
right throughout the month of December. Further proof, (if need-
ed) that Youghal is truly becoming haven for the Arts.
Key members of the choir are involved with the renowned
"Slemish" group who have performed in Youghal in recent years
and are eagerly looking forward to a return visit to the town.
A busy weekend is planned as they will also take part in the
Baptist service in ’Bru na Si’, on Sunday morning, 9th December
at 11.30 am. Later on that day the choir will make a very worth-
while visit to the Youghal and District Nursing Home at 3.00 pm.
So, if you are looking for an enjoyable evening filled with
Christmas music and song, then make your way to The Mall Arts
Centre on 8th December.
For anyone wishing for more information on the performances,

GREEN BARN
OUTSTANDING IN IT S FIELD
By Christy Parker
Success in the retail field has acquired an almost literal meaning
with the opening of a new ’lifestyle store’ about two miles on the
Killeagh side of Youghal. Surrounded by 200 acres of prime dairy
land, Green Barn comprises a spacious shop floor with adjoining
garden centre served by 130-space car parking and hopes to lure
shoppers more commonly seen browsing shopping malls and city
streets to the grass margins of rustic byways.
Proprietor Margaret Brown is a former housewife-of-the-year,
well-known chef, and TV and radio personality who currently
guests weekly on RTE1’s Mooney Goes Wild show. She runs the
new venture with her son Michael and daughter-in-law Nessa,
employing ten full-time and five part-time staff.
The Browns have already established two successful businesses -
Ballymackee guesthouse and the Gazebo restaurant adjacent to
Green Barn- but as Margaret insists, innovation is now imperative
in Ireland’s agricultural landscape. "When farming hit a new low,
we decided to diversify. We consider the home, lifestyle and gar-
den markets are quite viable and so here we are!" she says cheer-
fully.

is unlikely to be found anywhere else, including by request," she

attests, adding, "but while we import from Europe and America,
we try as much as possible to buy from home markets."
The variety is awesome and, dutifully, Margaret attempts to nom-
inate the remarkable: "We have pottery from Nicholas Mosse,
Louis Mulcahy and, more economically but no less tasteful, Tag.
There’s candles from Duffy & Scott and Northern Lights, Le
Creuset oven to table utensils and Denmark’s Greengate brand of
smart, funky country style products from bed linen to kitchen-
ware."

tree ferns. We also provide potted plants to order for hotels wed-
dings and so on."
All that but even so, its still in a field of the N25, one muses.
Margaret laughs. "If you give good quality and value, people will
come to you," she philosophises before clinching the argument.
"Besides, we are in a corridor with huge, ongoing housing devel-
opments in Youghal, Killeagh, Castlemarty and Carrigtwohill.
Most importantly, you can stock your house without the stress of
city travel."
At present, Green Barn is building and consolidating walk-in cus-
tom. "It’s been a fabulous first month," says Margaret, who pin-
points a WLR advertisement as having a major impact. The per-
functory web site and e-mail is imminent. Meanwhile visitors and
hosts are enjoying a field day!

ME AND MYSELF -A LOVE STORY.. myself

So in a short while I bought a mobile and whenever away on a trip
It proved very effectual as the affair grew more textual with each blip, blip, blip,
I was out and about every night, never missing a club or pub-crawl, blip
I flashed my smokes, cracked some jokes, told stories true and tall
I tried to be kind and I was sincere I paid for taxis and take away beer I had so much in common that I could not go wrong on whatever I opted to do
I dressed up well, and my after-shave smell, informed when I was near I shared the same humour and there’s truth in the rumour that I shared the same
bedroom too
I spoke to girls for hours on end and was careful to care and not to offend But there was trauma in store as I saw myself more and I watched it all slipping
I patted their pets, even settled some debts and did my best to blend away
I changed my look and I learned to cook and I always lavished praise For I knew me so well that I always could tell what exactly I was going to say
I even cried when their old folks died and carried coffins some of the ways
Bedtime became boring and I could hear myself snoring as I lay looking up at the
I drove them home, I lent them my phone; I invited them in for tea ceiling
But it was all just a waste for I was nobody’s taste; nobody would go out with me... And ’twas like I was numb when I’d grab my own bum and I knew I was losing my
But I said to myself, I won’t stay on the shelf, I won’t let my emotions be bled feelings
If I can’t get a date with a feminine mate -then I’ll ask myself out instead! The entire situation soon led to frustration and things grew increasingly bleak
There were mood swings and things and it make me cringe that I didn’t talk to
So I arranged to meet me at a quarter past three to go for a walk and a chat myself for a week
I showed up on time and I got along fine and I arranged to meet again after that
I’d say this is the deal, I’ll go for a meal and after that, I’ll just see how I feel Then one night out of spite I had a big fight and I can remember each hurtful word
Perhaps a late drink -what do I think? - or perhaps a night in might appeal still
I’d bought four rounds of drink and kicked up a stink when I refused to pay half of
Sometimes I’d hold hands as I’d stroll on the strand and laugh when I got jealous the bill
looks I was both sober and plastered as I called myself ’bastard’ and other names not very
And once drinking two beers with myself I did hear someone call me a queer in the nice
Nook Threw a chair at my head, hit the barman instead, who came round and threw me
But I didn’t mind -and neither did I- for I was so happy with me out -twice!
And I wasn’t too shy with people nearby to sit myself up on my knee
Out on the street I quickly got to my feet, aimed a punch at myself in the mouth
I’d walk myself home and linger alone at the front door, chatting away Kicked myself in the groin, then a punch on the spine,
Then I’d take out the key, go in and make tea and askif wanted to stay took a bottle and knocked myself out
Then the aching would start if I wanted to part for I just didn’t want me to go I am sad to report it all ended in court where I sued and was sued for the trouble
I’d plead with a smile ’please, please stay awhile, for I’ll miss me more than I know’ A 500 quid slap was the judge’s hard rap -which he then decided to double
The very next day I went my separate way, and never since called back or phoned
But while I’m not possessive I was getting obsessive that one day I’d meet some- You take a big chance when you embrace a romance -and I’m better off being alone.

And I feared of the danger that I’d fall for some stranger and break the heart of

Midleton on the back of defeat. Youghal never started the best

afloat. When Youghal finally got going and began to compete in
most areas of the pitch Mark Hennessey and Brendan o’ Sullivan

"High Sprits" Junior

Musical & Drama Club
Youghal, Annual
Christmas Variety Show
"Once Upon a Christmas"
Youghal’s very own junior musicians and actors will once again
take to the stage in the annual Junior Musical & Drama Club’s
’Christmas Variety Show’.
Now in its 9th year of production, this year’s show entitled: "Once
upon a Christmas" promises to be bigger and better than any
previously.
The show will run on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th, and Monday 10th
December at 8.00pm in the Youghal Community Centre, with a
matinee performance included on Sunday 9th December at
3.00pm
The highlight of the show this year promises to be the perform-
ance of a comedy sketch entitled: "The Case of the Missing
Cheese", written by one of the students, Caoimhe Hynes and per-
formed by the 8 and 9 year olds group. Perhaps Youghal got it’s
very own comedy script writer on its hands? One sure thing is Pat
Shortt had better watch out!
Sinead Lee, one of the producers of the show commented: "The
children have worked so hard on their performances this year. But
what makes this entire production so special is the input and sup-
port we get from our past pupils who are just so eager to help and
bring on the next generation". Eavan Foley and Joe Hehir, both from Youghal, Co. Cork, celebrated their wed-
