than the Detroit area, but times are
tough all over.
According to a 2010 Report by the
W. E. Upjohn Institute for Employment
Research, if West Michigan doesn’t
improve the talent level of its workforce,
the region will grow at a 0.4 annual per-
centage rate during the next 15 years,
substantially below the expected 0.9 per-
cent average predicted for the U.S. as a
whole. For West Michigan to “achieve a
greater rate of employment growth dur-
ing the next 15 years,” the report con-
cludes, “we suggest that it work to
improve the quality of its workforce.”
Many people in West Michigan
would agree. They have found that
career advancement just is not possible
without finishing the bachelor’s degree
they started years before. Some have
discovered that the upper-level manage-

reach without a master’s degree.
In response to this growing need,

Grand Rapids joins 11 other CMU Off-

wide variety of bachelor’s and master’s
degree options designed specifically for
working adults.
CMU is also in the unique position
of being able to bring programs directly
to local businesses and organizations.
Recently, Holland Hospital saw a need to
educate their administrators. Partnering
with the hospital, CMU was able to bring
the Master of Science in Administration

on-site, fulfilling the hospital’s need for
trained employees and the employees’
need for local classes.
Taking courses online is another
convenience offered to West Michigan
students. CMU has bachelor’s degree pro-
