Lesson Idea Name: How much money do I have?

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE2.MD.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢
symbols appropriately.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving
and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students:
c. Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot supports UDL by:

- Visual and audio supports
- Engaging the students
- Allows for teacher feedback
- Activates background knowledge
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity the students will have learned about the value of money. They will know what a
dollar bill, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny is worth. Using this information and knowledge students will then
learn how to add these values together. Students will use different strategies for adding the values. They will
practice using strategies such as the standard algorithm, manipulatives, or pictures.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery
for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:
During the SRT activity the students will use their knowledge of the value of money to find the total amount
for each word problem. The students will be presented with a problem. The problem will also include a visual
to represent the money in the problem. The students will then take 60 seconds to find the answer and select
the correct answer choice.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
My questions can be found under the technology product.
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I have selected the correct answers so that the students will see if they were correct or incorrect. Kahoot also
uses this to create a leader board throughout the process.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity I will look at the students answers to see how they did. Using this I will see if I need to
reteach the subject or if I can move on. If I need to reteach, I will look into other ways of approaching the
topic. If I can move on, then I will prepare my students for the next unit/topic.
How will the data be used?
The data from this tool will be used to see what the students retained from previous lessons about money.
From the data I will know and understand if my students grasped the concept. The data will be used to
determine where the class should go next. If the class data shows that they got more than half of the
questions wrong, then that shows they need to be retaught concepts they may not understand. If the
students do well with the questions it will show me, they understand the concept and they are ready to move
on. I will not be using the data to give students grades it will just be used to check their understanding.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I have never seen a 2nd grade class use Kahoot. I know they do however, I have not personally seen it used
with students at this age. I think it could go well if set up correctly. From this activity I hope to learn if it will
be just as beneficial if not more than a worksheet.
Reflective Practice:
I feel the activity I created could impact student learning by really engaging them in the activity. Kahoot
requires the participant to be focused since there is a timer for each question. This will impact students
because it will require them to pay very close attention to the question and answer choices. I believe this
lesson will be very fun and exciting for the students as well.
