Product Overview The Sauer-Danfoss 2 x 24 serial display module is designed for the demanding operating
conditions and environments common to mobile machine applications.
The display module integrates an industry standard New Twisted Nematic (NTN) LCD
alpha numeric display glass with robust high impact plastic packaging and interface
electronics allowing installation in no cab and open cab machines.
Superior readability in all ambient light conditions is accomplished through the use
of a transflective, backlit type of display with dark characters on a green background.
An adjustable viewing angle option (controlled via software) allows machine operators
to adjust display contrast to compensate for changing light conditions and operator
position. Character clarity is enhanced by a 5 x 7 dot matrix character.
Theory of Operation Sauer-Danfoss 2 x 24 Display Modules are designed to operate in conjunction with
Sauer-Danfoss microcontrollers. The generation of display messages is typically an
integral part of the application program running in the microcontroller. Character
information is transmitted from the microcontroller to the display module via RS232
standard signal levels and protocol operating at 9600 Baud.
• The operator’s spatial relationship to the display and the display viewing angle (also
referred to as viewing cone).
• Display viewing angle can be either fixed or variable. Fixed viewing angle displays
have a factory set voltage that cannot be adjusted after manufacture. Variable viewing
angle (also referred to as contrast) is controlled by varying the voltage applied to the
capacitive fluid in the display glass which changes the alignment of display particles.
Variable displays allow the user to adjust display glass contrast control voltage in a
step-wise manner through software control from the microcontroller. The display
voltage control range is controlled over 100 steps. Variable displays are typically used in
applications where there is no cab and variable lighting conditions.
Displays with variable viewing angles will default to the most recent control voltage at
power-up.

General Machine Wiring 1. All wires must be protected from mechanical abuse. Wire can be run in flexible metal
Guidelines or plastic conduits.
2. Use 85° C [185° F] wire with abrasion resistant insulation. 105° C [221° F] wire should
be considered near hot surfaces.
4. Separate high current wires such as solenoids, lights, alternators, or fuel pumps from
control wires.
5. Run wires along the inside of, or close to, metal machine frame surfaces where
possible. This simulates a shield which will minimize the effects of EMI/RFI
interference.
6. Do not run the wires near sharp metal corners. Consider running the wire through a
grommet when rounding a corner.
11. All sensors and valve drive circuits have dedicated wired power sources and ground
returns. They should be used.
12. Sensor lines should be twisted about one turn every 10 cm [4 in].
13. It is better to use harness anchors which will allow wires to “float” with respect to the
machine frame rather than rigid anchors.
Caution
Potential property damage. Unused pins on mating connectors must be plugged.
Device Repair The 2 x 24 Character Serial Display Module has no service parts, inoperable units should
be returned to:
For devices in need of repair or evaluation, include a description of the problem and
what work you believe needs to be done, along with your name, address and telephone
number.
