RMIT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE SEMESTER 01, 2010 COURSE PAMPHLET
co urse a b s tr a ct
Students from a variety of areas including Architec-
ture & Design, Engineering and GIS are invited to do
this elective and gain experience using Terrestrial
Laser Scanners (TLS) and engineering grade 3D scan-
ners. This equipment provides a great method of ac-
curately capturing as-built data of a site in a detail
that provides an opportunity to refine the design
process.

However a large focus of this elective provides a

unique opportunity to be involved with the Temple
Sagrada Famila (TSF) and contribute to some mean-
ingful research on Gaudi’s work. Students will mea-
sure and CAD document Gaudi’s original contribu-
tions to the temple and provide insight into Gaudi’s
design methods. They will use data that was captured
last summer by a small team of RMIT staff and stu- Image: TSF summer school 2010 elective
dents who went to Barcelona to document Guadi’s participants
work on the TSF using TLS and engineering scanners.

Practically this is a technology based subject that

involves innovative modelling using Cyclone, Navis-
works, Geomagics, Autocad & Rhino (with specialised
plug-ins including pointools4rhino and rhinoresurf).
3D CAD experience preferred.

privilege of working on the TSF.
P a ss i o n Fa ça d e T ower & M e s h i n g

Ahm a d Ba i k
Architecture, 1st year

In this project Ahmad learnt rhino whilst modelling

one of the towers on the Passion Fa ça d e.
Another project undertaken was to clean the point-
cloud and create a mesh contribute to creating the
mesh of the building.

Am he d S ha i e
Landscape Architecture, 1st year

Amhed was learning rhino by modelling a tower.

He also contributed a small amount to the pointcloud
cleaning process.

Chris to p h e r A r m s t r o n g
Landscape Architecture, 3rd year

In this project Chris contributed a large amount of

work in reverse engineering original Gaudi scale mod-
els that were scanned whilst in Barcelona.
He developed an understanding of Geomagic and ad-
vanced specific work in Rhino.

Dav i d Cri s p
GIS, Masters

David coordinated the project to clean the pointcloud

of unwanted noise in Cyclone, he lead other students
in cleaning utilizing layering techniques and export-
ing to create new pod files and a complex mesh of
the building, preparing for complex animations in
Navisworks.

Scale Models in Geomagics- Finding and remodelling the surface

Creating the Datum on the surface finding the contours on the surface Trimmed and untrimmed surfaces - ready to take the model into Remodelling in Rhino to create the surface

Working on the East interior

different surfaces- scale models
Modeling the top facade and the windows and surrounding facade underneath
Working in Geomagics
Working with Geomagics to find surfaces on the scale models

Mathe w W hi t eh e ad
Landscape Architecture, 2nd year

In this project Matt contributed a large amount of

work in reverse engineering original Gaudi scale mod-
els that were scanned whilst in Barcelona.
He developed an efficient use of Geomagic and ad-
vanced specific work in Rhino.

Micha e l T i a n R a n C h e n
Architecture, 3rd year

This project cleverly utilized pointools4rhino in a

more conventional sense, with elements of complex
ruled surfacing on the internal spiral staircase. It is a
good example of each area being similar , but requir-
ing individual modelling.
Other works by Michael include some work on scaled
models, pointcloud cleaning in cyclone and meshing.

Nick M c C a rt h y
Landscape Architecture, 3rd year

This project implements ruled surfacing techniques

on the entrance to the passion Fa ça d e. R u l ed sur-
faces in this area are generated in Rhino from the
edgesrf command, using pointools for rhino and fit-
ted to the as-built mesh.
The image in the top right corner demonstrates a
typical error in as-built data as identified from this
research.

Shann Yo ng
Architecture, Masters

This project involves using rhino with plugins poin-

tools4rhino and resurf to reconstruct an internal
room in the south side of the Nativity Fa ça d e. This
information is being compared to the rosary room on
the opposite side of the Nativity Fa ça d e.
This comparison will be used to influence a decision
to add additional detail to an existing area of the TSF.

Tapa s ya A rya
GIS, Masters

Tapasya assisted David in pointcloud cleaning for

meshing.
She also used skills in cyclone for her own masters
investigation.
