1. The Plant competition

Been seed

Wet cotton wool

A B

Container Number of been seeds Height of the seedling (cm)

A 5

B 50

a) State
i) What is to changed : The number of been seeds

ii) what is to measured : The height of the seedlings

b) What is the aim of this experiment ?

To experiment the relationship between the number of seeds and the
height of the seedlings.

c) What is kept the same in the experiment ?

The type of seeds / the size of the containers / the amount of water /
the amount of cotton wool.

d) State the relationship between what is changed and what is measured.

When the number of been seeds increases, the height of the seedling
will decrease.

e) What do plants compete for ?

Water, sunlight, nutrients, space.

f) Write the conclusion based on the experiment above.

When the number of plants increases, the competition of the plants for
water, sunlight, nutrients and space will be greater.

a) In this experiment, state:

i. What is kept the same : …………………………………….

ii. What is change : …………………………………………….

iii. What is observed : ………………………………………….

b) Give your reason for the observation of this experiment.

2. The pictures below show an experiment carried out to investigate the

effect of intra species competition between plants.

X Y

a) In this experiment, state:

i) What is kept the same :The number of plants / the type of

plant / the amount of soil / the type
of soil / the amount of watered.

ii) What is change : The size of the pot / space / the space
between the plants.

ii) What is observed : The rate of growing for each plant / how
the plants grow / the size of plants / the
height of plants / the number of leaves
for each plants.

b) Give your reason for the observation of this experiment.

The plants in pot X grow in a bigger space and lest compete.
The plants in pot Y grow in a smaller space and need to compete
with each other to gain space, water and nutrient.

c) Suggest one way to make the plants in pot X healthier.

Remove one plants from pot.

d) Write your inference base on your answer in (c) ?

There is no competition, if there is only one plant in the pot, so the
plant will be healthier.
When the only one plant in the pot, there is no competition to gain
space, water and nutrient, so plant can grow healthier.
