Homework 3 Professor Dunham

10 September 2019 Due: 17 September 2019

Read Proakis and Salehi Text: Chapter 3.

1. Proakis and Salehi 2.9.

2. The message signal m(t) = 4 cos(500t) + 2 sin(750t + π3 ) modulates the carrier signal c(t) =
A cos(9000πt), using DSB amplitude modulation.

(a) Find the time-domain representation of the modulated signal.

(b) Find the frequency-domain representation of the modulated signal.
(c) Plot the magnitude and phase of the spectrum of the modulated signal.
(d) What is the power content of the modulated signal?

3. An AM signal has the form

u(t) = [15 + 6 cos(4000πt) + 4 cos(6000πt)] cos 2π fct

where fc = 2 × 105 Hz.

(a) Sketch the (voltage) spectrum of u(t).

(b) Determine the power in each of the frequency components.
(c) Determine the modulation index.
(d) Determine the sidebands’ power, the total power, and the ratio of the sidebands’ power
to the total power.

4. Proakis and Salehi 3.11.

5. Proakis and Salehi 3.19. In addition, show the magnitude and phase of the spectrum of the
non-linear device’s output. Note that the signal x(t) is x(t) = m(t) + cos(2π f0t).

6. (EE 7370 Only) Proakis and Salehi 3.6.
