CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL
SHOWING AT YOUR OFFICE
CHRISTMAS PARTY
It’s that time of year again and the office party is looming. But
how do you make sure that one night letting loose with your work
colleagues doesn’t mean disaster on the career front in 2009?
Remember, just because your boss is footing the bill for the annu-
al team extravaganza, the Christmas party is still a business event
and we still have to watch our business manners. Here are 10 busi-
ness etiquette tips to survive the office Christmas party without
becoming the talk around the water cooler for all the wrong rea-
sons.
Check the dress code – make sure that you dress appropriately.
The office party is not the time to wear an outrageous outfit –
unless of course it is fancy dress. For women especially, remem-
ber that if you spend all year looking to establish your profession-
al credibility and get taken seriously by your work colleagues, you
don’t want to risk your professional reputation by your colleagues
and bosses talking about what you didn’t wear!
Get connected – the office party may be attended by senior lead-
ers in the organisation. Remember they are perhaps looking for-
ward to the party even less than you are. However one of the rea-
sons that many people don’t progress as fast as they would like in
their career is that they have little sponsorship inside the company
and they do not have an extensive network. Rather than spending
all night talking to your friends from your team, make the effort to
introduce yourself to the senior leadership team. Even your
finance director who said “bah humbug” about the expense of this
years party is more likely to become more affable when the party
gets going.

Thank you for giving us the chance to give you a statement on our
motivation to close down our operation in Youghal.
Our core product line Continence Care is going through a drastic
change at this time. The market requires increasingly products that
come of a different technological platform than the one we had
established in Youghal.
Since many years we are running this technology in our plant in
Slovakia. With the volumes of the machines in Youghal being
reduced in such a way, we had no option but to take this step.
I hope this helps.

Youghal Maritime Tradition Kept Alive YOUGHAL CREDIT UNION
in Boat Building Project SPONSORSHIP OF KEITH PHELAN FUND
On 9th August 2010 a wonderful community based project got
underway in Tyntes Castle, Youghal which re-ignited the tradition-
al craft of boat-building which has a long tradition in Youghal.
The project was based around the recreation of the 'Salmon Yawl'
boat which was unique to Youghal.
Initiated by Cllr Barbara Murray through The Youghal Socio-
Economic Development Group and part funded by South & East
Cork Area Development, this project was delivered by Mr. Jim
Horgan, a Youghal native, currently living in Galway. Jim is the
only surviving person with these traditional skills. Commenting
on the project, Cllr Murray stated: "We were extremely anxious to
use the knowledge that Jim was willing to impart on the local com-
munity. He has been undertaking boat-building projects using tra-
ditional methods since 1992, and has given extensive training in Barry Treacy, Manager of Youghal Credit Union presenting a cheque to Tony and
building of Galway Hookers and Currachs. Participants in the Lyndsey Phelan for the Keith Phelan Fund
course were literally guided through the steps from design stage to
construction of the boat, through to the finished boat product".
The project involved specific training in boat-building of small
traditional craft and was aimed at re-igniting the traditional craft of
boat-building which was synonymous with Youghal for many
years. Over the course of the boat-building, each day the local
community was awarded the opportunity to get involved in the
project. Morning and afternoon information sessions were con-
ducted by Mr. Horgan while a series of lectures by guest speakers
on areas of interest on Maritime Heritage were also an integral part
of the project. These casual sessions were conducted free of
charge.
The project took place at Tyntes Castle, in the centre of The North
Main Street, with participants aging from 25 - 75 years of age. The
promoters, The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group The pupils from 3rd to 6th class from National School enjoy a walking tour of

ing the boat to be constructed on their property. Special thanks to
South & East Cork Area Development (SECAD) and Youghal
Town Council for their support throughout the project.
Those worthy of a special mention include guest speakers who
gave talks; Sean Noonan, Liam Coveny, Frankie Mills, as well as
neighbours Carmel O' Halloran and Eileen Quill who provided
cakes and tarts daily and came for the progress report and the chat!
The Buttimer Family must also be acknowledged as it was Paddy
Buttimer's boat that provided the inspiration! Photographs were
supplied by the Buttimer family showing boat building in 1947
when Paddy built his last boat.
In reflecting on the project, Cllr Murray said: "This project it must
be said far exceed all expectations. It was wonderful to have the
old Youghal tradition of boat building revived and on view in
Youghal. Youghal is extremely fortunate that Jim Horgan is one of
our own and took the initiative to encourage this project forward - The children in Park National School busy making fruit salad.
putting huge time and energy into the project! Thanks also to the
Horgan girls Mary, Joan and Patricia".
To date, the boat is almost near completion and all that remains is
for it to be oiled and varnished. As funds have run out and in order
to complete this final step a bucket collection on the weekend of
15th October 2010 will take place throughout Youghal. Your sup-
port in this fundraiser is generously appreciated.

runners taking part on Sunday the 3rd of October. Haven't received
the results yet but I know one or two of our athletes took part. The
winner of this race was Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC in a time of 1.16,
very good time considering this was a 15 mile road race. There was
also a Cross Country event held in Youghal. Well done to all who
participated and got the venue organised and will have results at a
later date. Also we had another Cross Country event on the 10-10-

date. This was held in Carrignavar, results on a later date.
Up coming fixtures:-First up we have the East Cork 3k road race

some cross country training for those interested at Tower Park on
Mondays and Thursdays at 7.00 pm. This is a good idea as it breaks
up the training schedule and takes runners off the road to do some-
thing different. Hope to see you there and don't forget all runners,

YOUGHALAND DISTRICT COMMUNITY ALERT
It was observed that there was scant application for modern smoke
alarms as had been urged at previous meetings but Sergeant
Sharkey said he had forwarded some applications to County Hall
recently and a response was awaited. Cork County Council sup-
plies these alarms free to the non-council tenants who are vulnera-
ble through age or disability. The alarms carry 10-year batteries and
the householder the householder is responsible for the installation.
(It is worth noting that hearing difficulties and use of sleeping
tablets can seriously affect the ability to respond to an alarm, in
which cases smoke detectors linked to the personally monitored
alarm system, or to vibrating devices under a pillow are available
at the homeowner's own cost). Smoke alarm application forms are
available from Youghal Garda station and from County Hall. The
sergeant further agreed to find out what is available in terms of
other personal safety devices, on foot of an inquiry.
Finally, Sergeant Sharkey urged that anyone with suggestions or
concerns relating to the gardai should communicate them to the sta-
tion or via the Community Alert group.
Thank you The meeting drew to a close with acknowledgement to
the Walter Raleigh hotel for the ongoing and comfortable accom-
modation for meetings before expressing further gratitude to outgo-

stewardship and compared the former hurler and avid golf player's
to Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomery, albeit not necessarily in
his dexterity with a 9 iron. "You were the man in charge when peo-

Ardmore/Grange ICA
"GOING TO THE DOG'S"
Ardmore/Grange ICA held their monthly meeting on Tuesday
14th September which was presided over by Elizabeth Dolan.
Our hectic Summer finished on a high note when our creative
writing group had a worksop and talk with Fergal Keane the jour-
nalist and TV correspondent . Last week some of this group head-
ed for the National library in Dublin to meet and discuss" memoir
"writings with author Irene Graham.
On a watery note Early September saw some of our members sail
down the beautiful Blackwater on "Maeve" skipperd by Tony
Gallagher. What a magnificent trip on our doorstep. Luckily the
rain held off on the day and we got full view of Ballinatray house
and Strancally castle nestled in the woodlands on the river
bank.On the return journey we shared our picnic with "pharaoh "
the dog man's best friend.
Our choir are back in full voice under the leaderhsip of Jane
Knight, we are always looking for new members so come along
and join in the craic.
The art weekends are ongoing and a craft day was held last week
end in Kilrossanty which included beaded jewellary and Quilting.
Back to our guild meeting Monica Dwane was our guest on the
night and what a pleasant enjoyable lighthearted person she was.
She was demonstrating flower arranging and while she cheerily
chatted she put a flower here and a little bit of shrubbery and
greeenery there and before we knew it she had 3 magnificent
flower arrangements which were raffled much to the delight of the
members.
Our headline is just a reminder to every one that our trip to the
dogs is coming up on Friday October 29 th please bring your
money to the next meeting which is on tuesday 12th October at 8
pm and we have another interesting guest to wet our appetites

ST. FERGAL'S NATIONAL SCHOOL COMMUNITY BUS
FUNDRAISER IN KILLEAGH HALL By Michael Twomey
Since the Youghal Transport Group launched its community bus in
October 2008 the group have joined up with Cumman Na Daoine
in order to keep the group viably progressive and allow them to
source and download necessary funds. Cumman na Daoine Co-
Ordinator, Elmarie McCarthy explained. “We have a track record
on funding and on agency procedures; our job is to turn the dream
into a reality.” Tony Phelan of the Transport Group added. “We
have evidence of that through the support we received from South
and East Cork Area Development. For that we had to draw up an
active research project, run the bus one day a week to discover its
practical uses and what was the level of demand.” The merger has
been a successful enterprise and the groups hope to enter a stage
where the community bus project goes onto another level. Though
Tina Dunne and Sinead O'Donovan Noreen Hennessy and Linda Bashford initial funding has now ceased the Transport Group finances the
current Friday run. Ms. McCarthy explained where developing the
project now stands. “Applications are in for more funding and
we’ve had approval from one. FÁS are in recruitment stage for a
regular driver. A new bus in on stream and gratefully accepted; it is
being serviced and fully revamped with full wheel chair accessibil-
ity.” Mr. Phelan added that the group are ‘in discussions with a
sponsor’. Following a steady increase in usage over the past month
it is hoped that the service will expand once the new bus is fully
operational and both groups were keen to express gratitude for the
support and goodwill from agencies, the public and local business-
es. The Flag Day on the 16th of October will see further involve-
ment from volunteers and Mr. Phelan acknowledged that without
Mary Buckley, Helen Kennedy and Peig Ahern
their help there ‘would be no bus’. The motto for the group in rela-
tion to keeping the bus viable is “Use It Or Lose It”. Youghal was
one of the few towns not to have a community bus prior to the
group forming and with Cumman na Daoine on board its success
depends on everyone pulling together. “Its local people helping
their own community,” Mr. Phelan concluded.
