This year the 'Kids Kingdom' played host to some of the best activ-

Workshop' was a flurry of excitement and activity as kids of all
ages learned how to stilt walk or ride a unicycle. The bouncy cas-

course over and over again.

create their own Medieval Hats and Shields which they could then
wear and bring home as a souvenir. Each year the committee tries
to incorporate a good balance of fun, education and heritage into
the festival and I think it's fair to
say that we achieved just that.

As it transpired, much was achieved throughout and the pace of
developments left Jim quite surprised. "I thought we might get it

Senior Football. Our senior footballers tamely exited the champi-

did not play poorly and definitely played their best football of the
season during parts of this game and when we look at the final
score it's hard to believe that we were right in it and dominating
possession at 1-10 to 0-10 with just a quarter of an hour to go.
However, the ease with which Ballinacourty scored thereafter,

TIME TO SMELL THE
COFFEE FOR YOUGHAL
COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
By Christy Parker
Youghal Community Hospital & Hospice Service is hoping that,
despite the difficult times, individuals and organisations in the
area can help raise funds through an annual coffee morning event
on September 16th.
Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning, as the occasion is known, is a
national and cross-border fundraising event supported by
Bewley’s. The world-famous, award-winning Dublin coffee
house supplies all coffee morning organisers with freshly ground
packs fee of charge.
Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning asks people in workplaces,
homes and local organisations across Ireland collect €2 for each
cup of Bewley’s fresh ground coffee that is consumed. All money
that is raised locally stays locally and directly funds local hospice
care services. Now in its 17th year, the aim for 2010 is to raise
€2m through the sale of over one million cups of coffee north and
south of the border.
Quality of life Hospice or palliative care involves the total care
of patients and their families when care through a serious illness
switches from treatment aimed at cure to ensuring quality of life.
Over 30,000 people die annually in Ireland and over 6,000 people
avail of hospice services.
International studies show that patients using hospice services
consume at least 25% fewer medical resources than those who
access "usual care." This saving is linked to the fact that hospice
patients are largely cared for and die at home and thus use far less
acute hospital services. Hospice patients also live longer and in
greater comfort and dignity.
Hard times Founded in 1995, Youghal Community Hospital and
Hospice provides the highest possible quality end of life care to
patients. along with family support. However, the current econom-
ic climate renders this year’s Biggest Coffee Morning perhaps the
most challenging of all. "Our hospice too has been hit by cutbacks
and we are struggling to
provide the current level
of service, says matron
Anne O‘Dwyer. "Any
support at all is extreme-
ly welcome and much
needed, while we great-
ly appreciate that many
individuals and families
are facing worrying
times themselves. We
hope people can either
organise a coffee morn-
ing or support an event
that is already taking
place in their neighbour-
hood."

Cycling for the 'Emer Casey

Foundation'
Team Youghal gear up for 1,350 mile endurance race
By Derek Kiely
THE RACE AROUND IRELAND is quite simply the toughest
cycling endurance test in Europe covering a massive distance of
1,350 miles travelling through all four Irish Provinces with many
steep climbs and sharp descents along the way.
What makes this such a fantastic challenge is the constant flow of
the race which runs 24 hours a day from start to finish, with little
or no let up and that overwhelming desire not only to complete the
race, but to win it!
The race is part of the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association
(UMCA) World Cup Series and the race is organised by the Navan
Road Club and is sanctioned by Cycling Ireland.
Unlike other cycling races such as the RÁS or the Tour de France,
the course is in no way roped off, there are no marshals control-
ling traffic flow, and there are no planned rest stops or stages in Team Youghal in Training Picture: John Hennessy

when we put our minds together on something like the 'Race
Around Ireland' and I congratulate 'Team Youghal' and wish them

Sponsorship is a key component of putting a team together to enter
an event like the 'Race Around Ireland' and 'Team Youghal' depend
heavily on sponsored support as well as the team individually dig-
ging deep into their own pockets to take part in this huge chal-
lenge.
Jack O'Patsy Pottery is a household name in the East Cork Area
with their business in Shanagarry and a magnificent showroom
and store in Youghal.
Jack O'Patsy Pottery is one of two primary sponsors of 'Team
Youghal 2010' and it's Managing Director Pat Collins is delighted
to be involved "It's great to see ordinary people achieve something
extraordinary and the fact that it is local guys driving on together
to raise awareness of such a great cause as the Emer Casey
Foundation means that definitely everyone at Jack O'Patsy Pottery
is delighted to be involved with 'Team Youghal'. This is a great
challenge and it is something that we at Jack O'Patsy Pottery
would hope to be involved with going into the future. I think local
business sponsorship and local participants should go hand in Pat Collins from Jack O'Patsy Pottery, Youghal, hands over a cheque to Ger

to be associated with 'Team Youghal' and their bid to not only raise McCarthy, Tom Fitzgerald, Brian Fitzgerald, Kieran Greoger, Peter Roche and
awareness but to defend their 'Race Around Ireland' team title". Ray Flanagan. Picture: John Hennessy

The other primary sponsor of 'Team Youghal 2010' is KIA Motors

Youghal, who has again come on board for the 'Race Around
Ireland' providing a fleet of top class vehicles to 'Team Youghal'.
KIA Motors Youghal owner Pat Ryan said "Team Youghal' is
cycling for a great cause and KIA Motors Youghal, fully supports
the team. Again this year we are delighted to provide four vehicles
for the team, last year they had four 'KIA Soul's' this year we will
give them four more top of the range KIA vehicles. The Emer
Casey Foundation needs no introduction from me, it is a wonder-
ful foundation doing great work and KIA Motors Youghal is
delighted to be involved".

Organising or working on an event such as the 'Race Around
Ireland' takes massive work hours and 'Race Around Ireland' race
director Alan Heary and his team deserve tremendous praise for
their efforts.
Alan Heary said "Team Youghal' are a very important part of the
'Race Around Ireland' event, because they bring a very profession-
al team and back up crew to the race, with everything in terms of
planning and structure as well as pure enthusiasm and effort, plus
the age range in the team is so varied it shows that there is no age
barrier for 'Team Youghal' because of their superb preparation. I
think the spirit of the event is defined by 'Team Youghal' in their
approach to everyone involved in the event. There is nobody they
wouldn't help or give the best advice to, there is always an excel-
lent genuine attitude, I believe 'Team Youghal' embodies every- Time for reflection! Picture: John Hennessy

thing that is good about the 'Race Around Ireland' and we are
delighted to see them back to defend their title".
Ger Flanagan added "The general feeling of support from all over
the town and surrounding areas is brilliant and now we also have
the Evening Echo on board as Media Event Sponsor, plus our
associate sponsors O'Neill's Oil, Youghal News, Yawl Bay
Seafood, Mario's Motor Factors, Coopers Kitchens, Avonmore
House, Murphy Insurances and Touch of Class is deeply appreci-
ated. The local media coverage and coverage from The Youghal
News and Community Radio Youghal is great, we really appreci-
ate everyone who in some shape or form has got involved in sup-
porting the team".
'Team Youghal' have also got tremendous support from hotels on
their journey. The Carlton Redcastle Hotel, Inishowen, Co
Donegal, the Carlton Atlantic Coast Hotel in Westport County
Mayo, the Clarion Hotel Sligo, the Maldron Hotel in Galway
along with the Quality Hotel in Killarney have all come on board
to support the team. We also have a time station in Youghal at the
Walter Raleigh Hotel.
The race route through Cork is incredible, entering the County in
Glengarriff, heading on to Bantry, Goleen, Mizen Head, Skull,
Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Leap, Ross Carbery, Clonakilty,
Timoleague, Ballinspittle, Kinsale, Ballincollig, Kerry Pike,
Blarney, Cork City (Including St Patrick's Hill) Glanmire,
Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Castlemartyr, Killeagh and on to
Youghal.
When you even think about even just driving the Cork route, it
would be fair to say that the distance is a long enough drive in a
car, so it puts into perspective the challenge this journey in Cork
brings to the team on a bicycle and when you add in the rest of the
coastal areas on the Island of Ireland it gives you a small idea of
what is involved in this staggering endurance test.

An POST - SEAN KELLY Tour Of Waterford - Sunday 29th

August 2010
Two large groups from Youghal C.C. headed to Dungarvan last
weekend for Irelands biggest Sportive of the year and this clubs
main objective for the year. Long and hard training spins were put
in over the last few weeks by all in the club with the exception of
those who were fixing engines ( Id saw he was fixing an engine to
his bike ). 20 club men & women lined up for the 160km Comeragh
Challenge within a peleton of 2000 people with a further 12 club
men and women lining up for the 90km Kelly Coast within a pele-
ton of 1500 people. A further 1500 people participated in the
remaining 50km and 10km routes. Wow, that's a total of 5000
cyclists. The biggest ever in Ireland.
The Kelly Comeragh Challenge is the tough, tough part of the tour Youghal Cycling Club members pictured in their new Cycling Kit at the recent

again heads into the mountains via the Mahon Falls, once more at

The descent from Mahon Falls deserves and demands real care.
Then through Kilrossanty Village and along the Mauma Road as far
as Kilbrien before joining the R672 at Beary's Cross. Here, riders
can breathe a sigh of relief. Though it is still over 13km back to
Dungarvan, it is almost completely downhill. 13km which should
be devoted to enjoying the sense of achievement that can only come
from surviving the Kelly Comeragh. A great day was had by all who
participated and we are already looking forward to next year. Except
John Bulman who has retired as he does every year.
The Kelly Coast exits the start area close to Dungarvan Sports
Centre and heads for Abbeyside, Barnawee Bridge and the open
road. Even though this route is slightly shorter than the Kelly Members of Youghal Cycling Club presenting a cheque for €1,000 to Seamus

Youghal Credit Union hosted a visit of seven Ghanaian credit
union personnel who were on a study trip to Ireland. The visitors
work with CUA which is the trade organisation of all credit unions
in Ghana. Most of their week was spent in Dublin in the headquar-
ters of the Irish League of Credit Unions studying various aspects
of Irish credit unions.
As part of the study trip the group visited a number of credit
unions in Dublin and Cork. Youghal Credit Union was chosen as
a venue following the manager's, Barry Treacy, coaching trip to
Ghana in January to assist credit unions there. Barry is due to
return again in 2011 to offer further assistance.
The group were welcomed by the local credit union Chairman,
John Colbert, and a number of other directors. Following a tour of
the building an informal meeting was held where various ques-
tions were asked in relation to the operations of Youghal Credit
Union. The group thanked the credit union for their assistance and
expect to implement their new ideas on their return to Ghana. As
a token of their generosity
Stephen Kwasi Agyemang Asiamah , the head accountant of CUA,
presented the Chairman with a sash in the Ghanaian national
colours. The group then returned to Dublin where they will visit
Aras an Uachtarain prior to leaving Ireland on Sunday.

Youghal Golf Club ILGU Southern District
Ladies Branch Inter Club Matchplay
Finals held in Youghal
with Youghal Success
The finals of the ILGU Southern District Inter Club Matchplay
were held in Youghal on Friday and Saturday last. Friday after-
noon we saw Killarney beat East Cork in the Senior Foursomes.
Limerick beat Lismore in the Junior Foursomes. On Saturday we
were graced with wonderful sunny weather and the course was in
excellent condition, East Cork Junior team beat Killarney. Fota
Intermediate team beat Kanturk, Youghal Minor team beat East
Clare and Bandon Challenge team beat East Cork.
In the Minor Cup the match of Youghal V East Clare proved to be
Lady Vice Captain Martina Hooley, Jane Coyne, Sponsor Gaye Fitzgibbon, Eileen
Cashman, Lady Captain Mary Murphy and Kitty O'Sullivan. Sponsor: Aherne's
a mighty tussle with 2 matches won apiece early on to leave the
Seafood Restaurant remaining match number 5 to battle on with the lead changing
hands numerous times. Youghal player Amanda O'Neill Coyne
went up the 18th 1 up on her opponent Trish Browne only to lose
the hole and off to the 19th they had to go. With nerves of steel the
Youghal player in front of a tremendous crowd of home club sup-
porters pulled off a brilliant chip and the East Clare player made a
great effort at par only to have it just slide by allowing victory to
go to Youghal.
This was the first time since 1998 that this pretigeous event was
held at Youghal Golf Club. The Club was looking fantastic and
this was down to no small effort by the club’s staff and all the vol-
untary work completed by the clubs members over the previous
few weeks. The Ladies wish to extend a special thank you to the
Club Captain and his team for their efforts and traffic management
Lady Vice Captain Martina Hooley, sponsor Gaye Fitzgibbon, winners and Lady provided to our visitors. All the facilities of the club were made
Captain Mary Murphy available to our guests and visiting golfers.
The feedback that was received from our visitors and guests was
excellent and it was commented on several occasions, that the club
offered a wonderful welcome and ambience throughout the whole
weekend. We’d like to thank Margaret Power, Chairman of the
ILGU Southern District and a member of Youghal Golf Club for
all her support and all the support offered by the members of the
ILGU. We would also like to thank Mr Tommy Donnelly, Mrs
Marion Patteton and Mrs Phil Byrnes who were the Rules
Officials over the weekend.
A special thank you to all the ladies who offered their support and
decorated the clubhouse with spectacular flower arrangements,
without you the weekend would not have been such a great suc-
cess. After all our visitors had left, the ladies helped the winning
Minor Team celebrate their fantastic win well into the night with a
Lady Captain Mary Murphy, winners Celia Cotter, Mary Barry, Betty Cotter, chorus of song and laughter.
Frankie Forrest, Helen Keane, Mary O'Callaghan, Eithne Pyne, Mary Browne, The Minor Team now goes forward to the All Ireland Semi-Finals
Lady Vice Captain Martina Hooley,, Manager Bank of Ireland. Sponsor: Bank of in Donabate on the 24th of September and we wish all the team
Ireland
every success. We hope that the team will be well supported by all
members and we hope that the Minor team will be bringing back
Winners of the Open 18 the All Ireland Pennant to Youghal Golf Club

MOTORING WITH GER LEAHY
Love it or hate it the
Juke is coming
Nissan is going well selling quirky non main stream cars in the
european market its sold a massive 600,000 units of the Qashqai
in around 3 years and now following on that kind of success and
that kind of half car half SUV it plans to sell a large amount of the
new Juke crossover.

Nissan is continuing its strategy of targeting European buyers who

prefer non-mainstream cars with its new Juke crossover. The Juke
appeals to a growing group of buyers who like the high-seat con-
cept of a SUV but want something more original.Nissan tell us its
a kind of Nissan GTR and 370Z silhouettes look about it howev-
er I must have missed that it looks like a small SUV.!!!!!!!!In
Europe, the Juke is offered with two 1.6-liter gasoline engines
with 117-hp and 190-hp, emitting 138 and 159g/km of CO2
respectively, and a 110-hp, 1.5 liter diesel with CO2 emissions of
134 g/km.

Nissan hopes that 80 percent of Juke buyers will be new to the

brand, with three quarters of customers younger than 30 finding it
quirky and different and most likely will go down a storm.

Opel/Vauxhall is introducing
a 160,000 km (100,000 miles)
warranty on all its new cars
to help boost declining sales.
The General Motors unit calls the offer a "lifetime warranty" and
says it will include the powertrain, steering system, brake system
and electrical equipment throughout the life of a vehicle until it
reaches 160,000 km.Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly said the war-
ranty would be standard on all new models and was possible
because of the reliability of the brand's vehicles.

"Expensive repairs are a thing of the past," Reilly said in a state-

ment. "We hope this initiative will convince people to consider
purchasing an Opel again."
Opel/Vauxhall will cover all material costs up to 50,000 km, the
carmaker said. From 50,000 km to 100,000 km the amount paid
by Opel declines as the mileage on the car increases. From
100,000 km to 160,000 km, Opel will pay 40 percent of the costs,
meaning the owner would have to shoulder the remaining 60 per-
cent.
