"Social Media is Impacting IRL Friendships" is written by Julia Pennel that explain
details about how social media and technology are giving effects to friendships and relationships
in real life (IRL). The details are based on Pew Research Center's survey to adolescents within
age range 13-17 years old nationally. Julia (2015) mentions six details, the first one is more than
half are making friends online which shown by 57% of the surveyees are connected with stranger
on social media or because of online games that unlikely to be meet on real life. Next, texting is
the most popular form of communication. The percentage of adolescents that text their friends
daily is 55% and can be compared to 25% that only seeing their friends IRL every day.

The third detail is sharing passwords is pretty common. One of five teens have shared
their password to show their trust to a friend. Then, social media has strengthened relationships.
It is believed that social media to 83% teen users has strengthened their connection about their
friends lives. Also 68% of teen users said that their social media friends have encourage them
passing the hard times.

The fifth detail is social media can also hurt too. The meaning of hurt itself is like seeing
people posting about events which you're not invited to, 53% of teen social media users also
experiencing the same. While 42% have seen people post something about them but they can't do
anything on it. Those 21% of adolescents also feeling worse when they compare their lives with
their friends lives on social platforms. Last but not least, social media can cause major drama. It
is said that 68% of teen who use social media (52% of all teens) have gone through drama with
their friends on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, etc. Beside experiencing drama, 26% of all
teens also had conflict over an online content or text messages with their friends.
