5. COLD BENDING

5.1. GENERAL

5.1.1 The cold bending operation shall be carried out by the contractor, using a bending machine with an internal
mandrel of appropriate design to be approved by Engineer's Representative.
5.1.2 The contractor shall appropriately cold bend the Pipe-Joints such that during pipeline laying operation in
under-ground pipelines, (it also complies with required Zig-Zag configuration per relevant drawing in above-
ground pipeline) either vertically or horizontally. The Subcontractor shall make all necessary field bends,
required for the construction of the pipeline.
5.1.3 All bends shall be made cold and uniform by the use of an approved bending machine with bending shoes
of proper size and of a design suitable for bending operation. An internal hydraulically expanded mandrel shall
be used to maintain circular shape of the pipe.

5.2. DIMENSIONS / LIMITATIONS

5.2.1 All cold bends shall be made to a minimum radius as specified in table 1 of this specification.
5.2.2 In cases where bends are going to be made on double- jointed pipe, no cold bending activity shall be made
within one-meter length of the circumferential weld.
In such cases the circumferential weld joint shall have been successfully passed the N.D.T. inspection prior to
bending activity.
5.2.3 No cold bending activity whatsoever shall be done closer than two meters from the free ends of single or
double-jointed pipe.
5.2.4 To achieve a desired angle over pipe length (single or double) by cold bending operation, it shall be carried
out by successive partial cold bending operation at frequent uniform intervals.
5.2.5 Less degree per pipe diameter is more desirable, if practical and an accurate method of measurement shall
be used.
5.2.6 Any length of pipe, which is buckled or flattened by bending operation shall be cut- out and replaced by the
Subcontractor at his own expense.
5.2.7 Each individual cold bending action shall not deflect the pipe permanently by more than the amount
mentioned in following table in any length along the pipe equal to pipe diameter.

TABLE 1-ALLOWABLE COLD BENDING DATA

R: Min. radius of pipe-bend in terms of pipe diameter

(*)-Bending Angle has been limited to 69º (based on 30D) because of bending machine limitation.

5.3. METHOD OF COLD BEND

5.3.1 On each pipe joint to be bent, the weld-seam shall be located within Plus/Minus maximum 20 degrees from
the neutral axis of the bend, but more preferably on neutral axis.
5.3.2 The longitudinal weld shall not, under any circumstances be in direct contact with bending shoe. In such
case, Company representative reserve the right to reject the said bend.
5.3.3 At the option of Company's Representative, the longitudinal weld, which has been subjected to the shoe of
bending machine, shall be ultrasonically and radio-graphically inspected.
5.3.4 Where a maximum allowable bend angle per each length of pipe is required at locations where thin wall
pipe is unavoidable, a section of the pipe with thicker wall thickness may be used at the location of the bends so
as to prevent wrinkle or other deformation limits specified here in this Specification.

5.4. MEASUREMENTS AND TOLERANCES

5.4.1 Cold Bends of lesser radius specified in this Specification due to any particular Site condition may be done
with company's Representative prior Approval.
5.4.2 After the cold bend has been completed, measurement across the minimum and maximum axes of the
cross-section of the centre of the bend shall not vary by a value greater than 2.5% of the nominal diameter of the
pipe and at the straight ends of the bend shall not vary by a value greater than 2% (two percent) or 2mm
whichever is greater.
5.4.3 All pipes, which have been subjected to field bends, shall not contain any buckles, cracks and excessive
thinning.
5.4.4 At the discretion of Company's Representative, stretching and thinning of the pipe shall be limited to 1.5
percent of the nominal wall thickness, in any case the remaining wall thickness shall not be less than 98.5 percent
of the nominal wall thickness of the pipe under any conditions.
5.4.5 Mitered bends shall not be permitted.
5.4.6 The subcontractor shall strictly adhere to the stipulation of ASME B 31.4.
5.4.7 Any defects beyond the limits set forth in this Specification shall be rejected and immediately replaced by
new pipes.
5.4.8 The Subcontractor shall be responsible for all the relevant costs including the value for line pipe.
5.4.9 Hammering and use of jacks at any time to reform buckled or deformed portion of the pipe is strictly
prohibited.

5.5. RECORDS / FORMULAS

5.5.1 The contractor is to keep records of all cold pipe bends made by him in the course of pipeline construction,
and this information shall be made available to the Company's Representative upon request.
5.5.2 The recorded data shall contain the following minimum information:
- The name of bending foreman
- K.P. (Kilometer Post) of bend location
- Mechanical characteristics of pipe joint
- The magnitude of cold bend angle and its type (i.e. over-bend, sag bend, horizontal right, horizontal left,
double S-bend, etc.).
- Number of successive operation to achieve final bend angle.
5.5.3 The minimum cold bending radius shall be determined by the following formulas:

C  180 
R1 
π  a
C  2L
R2  ( )  180 
πa 

Where:
R1: Minimum radius of curvature of the pipe bend
R2: Minimum radius of curvature to be regarded for the trench at point of intersection.
C: Maximum pipe length that can be bent, per each joint, excluding the straight length at two ends which is
normally 8.0 m from a 12.0 m pipe single joint.
L: Straight length (tangent) at pipe ends, which is normally taken as 2.0 m.
aº: (Maximum allowable bending angle (degree) / pipe diameter length(m) ) x C.
