Sensory deprivation or perceptual isolation is the delib- senses deficiency

Short-term sessions of sensory deprivation are described


as relaxing and conducive to meditation, if sometimes
boring; however, extended or forced sensory depriva-
tion can result in extreme anxiety, hallucinations, bizarre
thoughts, depression and death.

An isolation tank is a lightless, soundproof tank in which
subjects float in salinated water at skin temperature. They an insolation tank
were first used by John C. Lilly[1] in 1954 in order to test
the effects of sensory deprivation. Such tanks[2] are now
also used for meditation and relaxation and in alternative
medicine. Isolation tanks were originally called sensory
deprivation tanks. Other synonyms for isolation tank in-
clude float tank, floating tank, floater tank, flotation tank,
REST tank, flotation baths, John C. Lilly tank and sensory
attenuation tank.

Latest research
New research undertaken at the Human Performance
Laboratory at Karlstad University by Swedish PhD, Sven-
Ake Bood[11] concludes that regular floatation tank
sessions can provide significant relief for chronic stress
related ailments. Studies involving 140 people with long-
term conditions such as anxiety, stress, depression and
fibromyalgia found that more than three quarters expe-
rienced noticeable improvements.

Dr. Bood commented: “Through relaxing in floating tanks,


people with long-term fibromyalgia, for instance, or de-
pression and anxiety felt substantially better after only 12
treatments”. Research targeted the effectiveness of floa-
tation treatment with regard to stress related pain and
anxiety over the period of seven weeks. 22 percent of the
participants became entirely free of pain and 56 percent
experienced clear improvement.
Broken down to various symptoms, the results were as
follows: 23 percent slept better, 31 percent experienced
reduced stress, 27 percent felt less agony and 24 percent
became less depressed or got rid of their depression al-
together. The research also confirms the findings of an
earlier thesis that floatation, after only twelve sessions,
substantially improves sleep patterns leaving users more
optimistic and with reduced nervousness, tension and
pain. Relaxing in a weightless state in the silent warmth
of a flotation tank activates the body’s own system for
recuperation and healing, said Sven-Ake Bood. What re-
searchers find particularly gratifying is that the positive
effects were still in evidence 4 months after the floating
treatment ended.

A ganzfeld experiment (from the German for “entire
field”) is a technique used in the field of parapsychology ganzfeld experiment
to test individuals for extrasensory perception (ESP). It
uses homogeneous and unpatterned sensory stimulation
to produce an effect similar to sensory deprivation.The
deprivation of patterned sensory input is said to be con-
ducive to inwardly generated impressions.The technique
was devised by Wolfgang Metzger in the 1930s as part of
his investigation into the gestalt theory; nevertheless, it is
comparable to the traditional technique of scrying, which
is independently attested in a number of cultures and be-
lief systems.

Experimental procedure
In a typical ganzfeld experiment, a “receiver” is left in a
room relaxing in a comfortable chair with halved ping-
pong balls over the eyes, having a red light shone on
them. The receiver also wears a set of headphones
through which white or pink noise (static) is played. The
receiver is in this state of mild sensory deprivation for half
an hour. During this time a “sender” observes a randomly
chosen target and tries to mentally send this information
to the receiver. The receiver speaks out loud during the
thirty minutes, describing what he or she can see. This is
recorded by the experimenter (who is blind to the target)
either by recording onto tape or by taking notes, and is
used to help the receiver during the judging procedure.

In the judging procedure, the receiver is taken out of the


ganzfeld state and given a set of possible targets, from
which they must decide which one most resembled the
images they witnessed. Most commonly there are three
decoys along with a copy of the target itself, giving an ex-
pected overall hit rate of 25% over several dozens of trials.
