STRATEGY AND STRUCTURE OF AN OPRGANIZATION

Strategy and structure are two independent elements in business


that are somewhat co-dependent. The strategy – which is created
often – determines the structural elements associated with the
business. Some businesses also use the inverse and shape strategy,
which is based on structure. Combining these forces effectively leads
to a cohesive business model that functions to achieve common
goals.
Strategy is the actionable aspect of running a business. It includes
pricing models, marketing and branding tactics and competitor
assessment. Formulating a strategy is done to determine how the
business will fit within the market – and more importantly – how the
business will compete.
Whereas Structure involves the nuts and bolts of the business, and it
varies widely, based on the niche and business model. The structure
begins with the job roles for executives, management and
departmental needs.
 Success of a firm depends on how well a firm’s business strategy is
matched to its organizational structure.

ORGANISATIONS THAT INTEGRATED STRATEGY AND STRUCTURE IN A


WAY THAT THEY COULD SURVIVE AND WIN COMPEYION IN MARKET:
 The TATA Group:
The Tata Group is a multinational company with its head-
quarter located in Mumbai, India. The Tata Group is one of the
largest private employers in India employing more than 350000
employees. Tata companies operate in seven business sectors:
communications and information technology, engineering,
materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals.
Every Tata company or enterprise operates independently.
Each of these companies has its own board of directors and
shareholders, to whom it is answerable. Tata, with its long
history, is synonymous with the Indian economy. Its growth has
been a prime index to be watched for gauging India’s growth.
With a history of over 100 years, Tata has grown leaps and
bounds by diversifying into different businesses. These
businesses are so diversified and different that it presents us an
opportunity to draw contrast between the different kinds of
structures adopted in these businesses.
Also with the increasing globalisation there is an increased
pressure on the Tata group companies to expand their
operations beyond the nation’s boundaries. There has been the
realization for the same and the Tatas have been proactive in
sensing and capturing the internationalization opportunities.
The widely known Corus acquisition by Tata Steel, the TCS foray
into international markets, Tata Tea’s acquisition of U.K based
Tetley tea have helped Tata to establish the brand Tata in the
international arena.
The study of Tata aims at obtaining insights into the
impact of strategy change (diversification,
internationalization) on the structure of the organization
as a whole (reconstructionist approach). Also the impact
of structural change on the firm’s strategy (structuralist
approach) could effectively be studied with respect to
Tata given its long history. So the Tata group presented an
exciting opportunity to draw the relationship between
strategy and structure of an organization.
 APPLE
Apple Inc. is a successful American company, which has been in
existence since 1976 . Over a span of three decades, Apple Inc.
has been able to establish itself as a force to reckon with in the
electronics market. Apple is engaged in the manufacture of
hardware products such as Macintosh, portable music players,
personal computers (PCs) and software, networking solutions,
third party digital content and related software. The company’s
most notable products include Macintosh computers, ipods,
ipads and the Apple TV. Apple’s online presence is also firm,
especially with the existence of a virtual marketplace where the
company sells digital content through App store, itunes,
iBookstore among other online platforms
The company focused on a high-market strategy aimed at
developing highly engineered gadgets at a premium but
consumers never responded to this strategy positively. 

Apple’s initial business practices have been lost with the successive
changes of management and CEOs. Different people have altered the
company’s operations based on their ideas of what they thought the
company should look like. However, Steve Job’s influence on the
technological giant has been the most profound and widely talked
about. Steve Jobs has seen Apple transcend to a very profitable
company.
