Title: Ratio & Ratio Language

Grade Level: 6th
Content: Math
Standard Addressed: MGSE6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to
describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

Amount of Time: two 50-minute class periods (one class period for introduction of ratios and
beginning project, one class period to finalize project)
Technology Standard Addressed: 3 Knowledge Constructor
SMAR Level: Augmentation
Essential Question(s): What is a ratio? How do I represent ratios in a written form?
Learning Activity:

• Introduction: Students have prior knowledge of counting and comparing numerical values.
Students have written numbers in fraction form prior to this lesson. Students are reminded
of these skills and are instructing to pay attention to the video that they are about to watch.
Teacher reminds students of the electronic policies and reminds them to stay on task.
• Instruction/Activities: Students take out electronic devices and are instructed to watch the
personalized, edited Edpuzzle video via a link the teacher has posted on the classroom blog.
While the students are watching, the teacher is actively walking around the classroom
monitoring the students, their devices, and their work. As soon as the video starts, students
are instructed to take out a piece of paper and pencil. Throughout the video, students are
asked questions to assess their understanding of the content presented. Once all students
have watched the video and completed the questions, they will turn in their scratch work
and receive instruction on their final product.
• Final Product: As a final product, students will show their understanding of ratios and ratio
language. In groups of 3, students will log on to Edpuzzle and find a video explaining ratios
on a middle school level. They will then edit and personalize their own video. The video
must be between 3-5 minutes, include two notes, and 4 questions. The added notes must
be appropriate and relevant to the video content. Students must select the correct answer
on their added questions.
• Evaluation or deliverable: The final product will be evaluated against a rubric that students
will have access to during their creation.
Reflective Practice
To enhance student engagement with the content and their classmates, students will post their
final product to a classroom discussion board. This allows students to interact with their peers

and learn further from each other’s creations. Since students will be creating a final product,
Bloom’s Taxonomy’s level 6 is achieved.
