SECTION 16I – CIRCUIT AND MOTOR DISCONNECTS 16I-1

16I-1. DESCRIPTION

a. Provide switches of proper characteristics as disconnecting means.

16I-2 MANUAL MOTOR STARTERS

a. Manual starters, quick-make, quick-break, with thermal overload protection; B.S. indoors and NEMA
3R raintight outdoors. Switches shall be clearly marked for maximum voltage, current and
horsepower. Provide fractional horsepower manual starters similar to Square-D Class 2510.

b. Manufacturers: Square-D, Westinghouse, Siemens, General Electric, Sylvania, Cutler-Hammer or

approved substitute.

16I-3 DISCONNECTS

a. Safety and disconnect switches shall be B.S. HD (heavy duty), quick-make, quick-break, dual rated
with electrical characteristics as required by the system voltage and the load served. Switches shall
be equipped with a defeatable cover interlock.

b. Enclosures shall be B.S. for indoor use unless specifically noted otherwise and NEMA weatherproof
where installed exposed to the weather or designated by the subscript "W.P." Disconnects shall be
approved for location and use.

c. Disconnects shall be fusible or non-fusible as designated on Drawings. Equip all fusible disconnects
with dual element fuses required by the equipment served. Coordinate fuse sizes at the time
equipment is connected. Should fuse sizes require changing from what is shown due to variance
between the original design information and actual equipment installed, fuses shall be sized in
accordance with Bussmann Fusetron 40C recommendations. In no case shall fuses be sized smaller
than the starter heaters on motor circuits. Install rejection feature on all fused switches, for
acceptance of Class R fuses only.

d. Manufacturers: Square-D, Westinghouse, Siemens, General Electric, Sylvania, Cutler-Hammer or

approved substitute.

16I-4 DISCONNECTS

a. Provide all Code required disconnect switches under this work, whether specifically shown or not.

b. Install disconnect switches used with motor-driven appliances, motors and controllers within sight of
the controller position unless otherwise indicated.

c. Product Delivery, Storage and Handling:

1) Deliver switches individually wrapped in factory-fabricated fiber-board type containers.

2) Handle switches carefully to avoid damage to material components, enclosure and finish. Do
not install damaged switches; remove from project site.

3) Store switches in a clean dry space. Protect switches from dirt, fumes, water and physical
damage.

16I-5 INTERLOCKS

a. Interlocks shall be provided as required positively to prevent: the cover of switch-fuse or fuse-switch
or composite switch and fuse units being opened with the switches closed; the closing of switch-fuse,
fuse-switch or composite switch and fuse units with the cover open.

b. Isolators and switches shall be mechanically interlocked with the cubicle door to prevent access to the
mechanism unless the isolator is opened and conversely to prevent closure of the isolator or switch

with the cubicle door open.

c. Triple pole reversing contactors shall be mechanically and electrically interlocked to ensure that they
cannot be closed simultaneously.

d. All mechanical interlocks shall be of the preventative type and shall be arranged to prevent mal-
operation as close as practicable to the point at which manual force is applied.

e. All electrical interlocks shall function so as to interrupt the operating supply and an approved system
of interlocks shall be provided to cover hand operation of equipment which is normally electrically
operated.
