How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?

 Decrease the number of coils.

.
 Increase the current
.
Correct answer.
Increasing the current will increase the strength of the electromagnet.
 Increase the distance from the electromagnet.
.
 Decrease the voltage.

Describe the magnetic field pattern around a current carrying wire.

 Spreading outwards from the wire.
.
 Lines evenly spaced.
.
 Circles spaced further apart.
.
Correct answer.
A current carrying wire creates a circular magnetic field, with the field lines increasing in
separation with the distance away from the wire.
 Circles spaced equally apart.

Where can a uniform magnetic field be found?

 Around a loop of wire.
.
 Between two opposite poles.
.
Correct answer.
A uniform magnetic field can be found between two opposite poles.
 Around a solenoid
.
 Around a current carrying wire.

Select the correct statement about the interaction of magnetic poles.

 A north and a south pole will attract
.
Correct answer.
A north and a south pole will attract. This is true.
 Like poles attract
.
 A north and a north pole will attract
.
 Opposite poles repel

Why is it important to use the same type of paperclips when investigating
the strength of an electromagnet?
 To average the results.
.
 Bigger ones are easier to pick up.
.
 So that it is a fair test.
.
Correct answer.
Having different sized paperclips adds in an unnecessary variable. Picking up '10
paperclips' is too vague when the paperclips are different sizes. For example, a
stronger electromagnet may pick up 6 small paper clips or just 3 large, whilst a
weaker electromagnet might pick up 3 large paperclips, but only 5 small paperclips.
Smaller paperclips allow for smaller 'increments' in measurement.
 The small ones might clip together.

Match the correct pole to each of the diagrams by typing 'N' for north, and
'S' for south.

B   S/s

C   N/n

D   S/s
E   N/n

Select the device that does NOT use an electromagnet.

 Relay
.
 Compass
.
Correct answer.
A compass uses a magnet, but there is no flow of current and no electromagnet.
 Loudspeaker
.
 Electric bell
