FIRST AID GUIDELINES

NUMBER TWO
Take Action In An Emergency

Bystander Intervention:

1. Bystanders play a very important part at the scene of an accident.


2. Bystanders can perform the following services to a victim of an accident:
A. Obtain help from Emergency Medical Personnel.
B. Find out what happened to cause an accident.
C. Start First Aid for life-threatening injuries.

Assessing The Victim:

1. When you first arrive on the scene of an accident, you must first decide if any injuries are life
threatening.
2. Bystanders must decide what type of help is needed.
3. Determine how many people are injured.
4. Be willing to treat victim until someone with greater knowledge of first aid or advanced life
support arrives.

Scene Survey:

1. Do a ten (10) second survey looking for the following:


A. Hazards that could be dangerous to the person treating.
B. Cause of injuries.
C. Number of victims.
2. When you approach the emergency scene you should scan the area for dangers to yourself or
other victims.
3. Determine how many people are injured.

When To Call EMS:

1. Below you will see a list of times you should call the Emergency Medical Services:
A. Severe bleeding.
B. Downing victim.
C. Electrocution.
D. Breathing difficulties or no breathing.
E. Possible heart attack.
F. Choking.
G. Altered mental status.
H. Poisoning.
I. Attempted suicide.
J. Critical burns.
K. Some seizures cases (the majority of the time they do not require medical assistants).
L. If the victim is paralyzed.
M. Spine injuries.
N. Imminent childbirth.

2. If you are not sure of what to do.

How To Call EMS:

1. The Victim’s Location.


A. Give the name and addresses – Names of intersecting roads and other landmarks if
possible.
2. Your phone number.
A. This prevents false calls and allows the dispatcher with 911 services to call back for
additional information.
3. What happened?
A. State the nature of the emergency [My husband fell off the ladder and he clams he has
no feeling in his legs].
4. Help that is needed:
A. Number of injured.
B. If you think more than EMS personnel are needed indicate this also.
5. Victim’s Condition.
6. Explain what the injuries are and what you feel they may need to take care of them.
A. The victim has severe bleeding of the lower leg and we need transportation.
B. I can not communicate with the victim. The windows are closed and I can not open the
door.
7. The caller should be the last person to hang up the phone. You should stay on the line until you
are told to hang up the phone.
