Prerequisite(s) None. It is recommended that students are competent in computer skills.

Calendar This course covers skill development, understanding, and application at an


description advanced level of word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and
databases integrated with an introduction to Management Information Systems
(MIS). Emphasis is on problem solving and integration of software applications
within the MIS context.

Learning Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to explore

Computer applications to solve business-related problems. At the end of this
course, the successful student will have

All class assignments should be submitted by the end of the class, the same day.
Failure to complete the required assignments will mean a ‘0’ participation grade for
that class.
You must retain a copy of each submitted assignment and all working files
(including, but not limited to, draft versions of your assignments, articles cited,
interview transcripts, surveys) until you have received your final grade for the whole

You are declaring that the work submitted is your own and complies with all
regulations stated in the Academic Misconduct section in this syllabus as well as
UFV Policy 70. You are also agreeing to allow your work to be compared against
the work of others, including the use of plagiarism detection software, to detect
plagiarism.

References All chapters to be discussed in the class MUST be read BEFORE class.
Assignments and Case Study would be discussed in class before being assigned.
Failure to complete the required readings and assignments will mean a ‘0’
participation grade for that class.
Written assignments must use the current APA style of referencing. See also
guidelines from the Academic Success Centre.

Standard percentage equivalencies are used to determine the final letter grade.
The final percentage will be rounded to the nearest integer, using standard
mathematical practice (i.e. if the first digit after the decimal place is 5 or higher,
rounding is to the next higher integer) before converting to a letter grade.

Academic Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, giving and receiving
Misconduct information during any test or exam, using unauthorized sources of information
during any test; plagiarizing; fabrication, cheating, and, misrepresenting the work of
another person as your own, facilitation of academic misconduct, and under certain

conditions, non-attendance.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated. You must reference your work and
acknowledge sources with in-text citations and a complete list of references.
This includes direct and indirect quotes, diagrams, charts, figures, pictures,
and written material.

For group projects, the responsibility for academic integrity, which can result in
academic misconduct and its resulting penalties, rests with each person in the
group and sanctions would be borne by each member.

Student Students are required to conduct their behaviour in a mature and responsible
conduct manner, consistent with the University mission, policies, procedures and
regulations. Students will be held accountable for their actions whether acting alone
or in a group. Students should familiarize themselves with UFV Policy 204.

Examination Examinations must be written at the scheduled, time, date, and location. The final
policy examination period includes Saturdays.

Writing the final examination at a time other than the one in the posted examination
schedule will only be permitted when a student has a direct conflict between two
scheduled examinations. Two exams on a single day is not considered a valid
reason for moving an exam. Students must notify the affected instructors of a
conflict by the end of Week 9 of the class. Exams may be scheduled at a time or
day of the week different from the class meeting time. You must adjust your
schedule accordingly.

Only severe extenuating circumstances (such as serious documented illness) will


be accepted as a reason for not writing an exam as scheduled. In this case, the
instructor must be notified by the student at the earliest possible opportunity, and a
doctor's certificate must be provided. The instructor will establish the alternate date
and location for the make-up exam.

Any travel plans need to be made for dates after the scheduled exam period which
is published well in advance in the UFV Calendar Schedule of Events.

No electronic devices (other than calculators, if required) will be allowed. Where


calculators are allowed, the professor reserves the right to clear the calculator’s
memory.

All papers, mobile phones, books, bags, and outer garments must be placed at the
front of the class or under the desk as specified by the instructor.

Assignments Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access Practical Assignments and Group Project
work would be given in the class and the students are required to do them using
MS Office 2016. Students will be required to apply the concepts seen in class.
Students in group of 3 to 4 (depending on the class size) will be given the Excel
Case Study to work on and give the presentation. Students are expected to
thoroughly study the assigned case and be prepared to answer individually
the questions asked in the class and also engage in appropriate discussions.
Refer to “Case Study-3 or Case Study-9” (as assigned) on the blackboard in the
Course Material.
MIS Quiz will be an online timed quiz.

TESTS
The Midterm would be a practical exam covering only MS Word and Power Point.
Final Exam Would be again a practical test covering MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
and Access (all the related chapters)

NOTE
Students are expected to come in time for the class.
Late comers will not be allowed and will be not be given class participation
for that particular class.
Go through the lesson to be taught in the class in advance.
Use your UFV accounts / email for any kind of correspondence.
