TITLE :

Knowledge of antenatal women regarding breastfeeding

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM :

“A study to assess the knowledge of antenatal women regarding breastfeeding


among primigravidae mothers at tertiary care hospital in mangalore city , India”

OBJECTIVES:

 To assess the knowledge of antenatal primigravidae mothers regarding breastfeeding


as measured by a structured knowledge questionnaire

MATERIAL AND METHODS

 A descriptive cross –sectional survey design was implemented .


 Fifty primigravidae who were either attending the antenatal outpatient
department or were admitted in a tertiary care hospital in Mangalore city,
India were selected using convenience sampling technique.
 Those primigravidae between 32 and 40 weeeks of gestation ,knowledge was
measured using a researcher developed breastfeeding knowledge
questionnaire.the five experts validated the tool.
 Pilot study was conducted five antenatal women after which reliability was
established using split half technique and spearman Brown prophecy
formula,which yielded on r=0.90
 The BKQ had 20 multiple choice questions .each question had four options
that carried score of one for correct answer and zero for the wrong answer.
 The study received ethical clearance from the ethical committee of the
university.
 Informed consent was taken.
 Data collection was done in May 2012

RESEARCH METHDOLOGY

Research approach :Quantitative research approach

Research design : Descriptive cross sectional research design

Target population :Primigravidae antenatal mother

Accessible population : Primigravidae antenatal mother who were admitted in tertiary care

hospital in Mangalore city , India.

Sample : Primigravidae antenatal mother who were admitted in tertiary

care hospital in Mangalore city, India

Sampling

Inclusive criteria:

 The primigravidae 32 and 40 wks of gestation


 Who had no obstetrical complication
 Who willing to participate in the study

Exclusive criteria

 Multirgravidae mother
 Who are not willing to participate the study

Sampling technique :Convenience sampling technique

Sample size : 50
TOOLS USED FOR THE STUDY

Part 1 : Socio demographic data

Part 11 : Breastfeeding knowledge questionnaire(BKQ)

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Data were analysed using SPSS16.0


 Frequency and percentage were computed for socio-demographic profile
 Mean, median, range, mean percentage and standard deviation was computed for
knowledge items
 chi-square was computed to determine association between the knowledge and the
socio demographic variables .

RESULTS:

SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE:

It was found that maximum percentage of women were in the age group 17-19 yrs
42%
Housewives 46%
Muslim religion 54%
Had completed primary education 56%
Monthly income 4,000 to 8,000 -40%

KNOWLEDGE SCORES

The overall mean knowledge score was 12 the median was also 12
The range of scores was from 8-16.standard deviation +-1.68
Majority of women knew that colostrums is lemon yellow 84%
And its benefits for baby 72%
The women had knowledge in hygienic aspects during breastfeeding 44%
positioning of baby 48%
Only 58 % percent of the women knew that the duration of exclusive breast
feeding is six months 32% people responded correctly to the colostrums is
secreted soon after delivery
Only 38 % responded correctly advantages of breastfeeding
DISCUSSION :

 In this study revealed that majority 72% of the women knew that exclusive breast
feeding meant giving only breast milk.
 Only 58% knew the correct duration of breast feeding.
 This study also found that all women 100% knew the breastfeed is the best food for
the baby, it is the best method of feeding and that it leads to healthy outcome of the
baby
 38% were aware of its advantage to the mother in terms of decreasing the risk of
breast cancer.
 In this study 72% of the women knew the benefits of colostrums
 Among the rural population it was found that only 35.6% of women were unaware of
the importance of colostrums.
 It is essential for health professionals to impart knowledge to women in areas of
deficit and encourage them to have good practices regarding breastfeeding

CONCLUSION:

 This study revealed a deficit in knowledge in some content areas of breastfeeding .


 These content areas need to be considered during the development of breastfeeding
educational material.
 Breastfeeding education should start early in the antenatal period as it is fundamental
to the success of exclusive breastfeeding .
