FOREWORD
SCHEDULE OF DIMENSIONS
1676 mm 15ft. 6 in.) GAUGE.

I. OBJECTIVE:

Next to the General and Subsidiary

Rules, the document most essential for the
runnina of a railway is the Schedule of
~

Dimensions. Every supervisory staff,

concerned with the maintenance of Railway
structure and rolling stock t is required to
possess a personal copy of this Schedule of
Dimensions. No design office can function
Ni thout a copy. The Schedule of Dimensions
has therefore been revised incorporating all
re~uired modification!'l and i~ hAin£T i~!':uP.d
:tor trte gtnoance of and compliance by the
staff.

2. HISTORY1

Last Century

2 .l. The first list of 11

Standard
Dimensions" for Indian Railways was ag·reed
upon at a meeting held in London on 5th
March, 1856 by the representatives of th<~
Great Indian Peninsula, Bombay, Baroda and
Central India, Madras, and Sind Railwayst and
another but slightly different list was
adopted by the representatives of the
principal railways, at a meeting held in
Calcutta in 1860. Neither of these was
authorized by the Government of India till
1872, l-!he n the schedule of the London
Committee of 1856 was issued for general
guidance in P.W.D. Circular No. 35 Ry of 1st
August, 1872.

2.2.In Resolution No.l233-1238, dated

15th May, 1875 the Government of India issued
( ii}

its first comple te provisional list of

Sta ndard Dimensions for 5 ft. 6 in. and metre
gauge railways. This schedule remaine d in
forc e till 1881 when a confe rence was held o n
the subject, and a fresh schedule was issue d
fP.W .D. Nos. 23 and 4/Ry. of 18th October~
1881 and 8th June , 1882, respectively l, in
which a distinction was drawn between
absolute and de s irable dimensi ons. This
schedule was revised in 1886 an ~ was again
considered by the Ra ilway Conference in
September, 1888 and b)' the Locomotive s and
Carriage and Wagon Superinte ndent's Committe e
in December, 1889 with the result that
further r e visions uere made in 1891, 1892 and
1896.

2. 3. Each revision naturally embodie d

some adva nc es found to be desirable to
pro vide f o r the growth of the ~raffic.

Before Independence.

2 . 4. Withtheir Circ ular letter No.

735-W of 1922, the Railway Board issued a
Schedule of Maximum, Minimum and Recommende d
Dimensions, t o be observed on all 5 ft . 6 in.
gauge railways in India. In that schedule
c ertain of the dime nsions of the previous
schedule of 1913 were mo dified with the
o bject of permitting the us e of enlarge d
rolling stock.

2.5. The schedule of 1922 contained two

distinct sections, namely a schedule of
"Maximum and Minimum" dimensions, which, it
was considered, would enable th e pr opos e d
larger vehicles to run with abo ut the same
degree of safety as that which was previously
obtained on the o lder railwa ys with ex isting
( iii )

the same clearances from fix e d structures
for the future large r v e hicles a~ th e 1913
schedule gave for existing vehicle~.

2. 6. In Circular
their letter No.
232 - Tech . dated the 8th Fe bruary, 1926, th e
Railway Bo ard gave instructions that th e
Re commended Dimen s i ons g i ven ~n the 19 22
sch e dule were to be obse r ved on i mp o rtant
railways in all new wo rks and alteratio ns t o
existing works. These orders were modifie d in
letter No. 232-Tech. of the 26th April, 1926 ,
whic h a llowed a relaxat i o n in the case of
certa i n recommended dime n s ions, the adoptio n
of which would involve h eavy expenditure in
rem o d e lling works. In 19 2 9 it was f o und
desira ble further to ame nd the Schedule o f
1922 in order to introduce ce rtain impr ove-
ments in the light of exp e rience gained si nce
it was issued and t o prov ide the clearances
require d by electric trac tio n equipment o n
lines which were likely t o be electrified i n
the future. A few spec ial dimensions were
also r e quired for "Standard C" railways as
defined in the "Rules f or the preparation of
Railway Projects, 1926 -Ch apte r - III, Standard s
of Construction".

2.7. The new Schedule- ! issued in 1929,

the r e f o re, embodie d these amendments and
additio ns and the o pp or tu n ity was taken t o

in accordance with Correrition Slips Nos. l to

modification~ to bring it 11p -to-dah'!. Jn
other resp~cts such as the prov~s~on of
separat~ chapters for Rolling Stock with the
maximum present and future moving dimensions
and for electrical equipment of electrified
lines, the arrangement of the 1929 Schedule
was maintained. Schedule-II and III showing
respectively Recommended Dimensions and
Infringements of Schedule-! which may be
permi H:ed on existing Railways and the
appendix dealing with extra clearances
required on curves, were retained.

2 .11.At the time of Independence, 13

Correction Slips were issued to the 1939
SchedulP..

After Independence.

2.12. In 1947 the Schedule of Dimensions

1939 was reprinted for the Indian Railways.
In this schedule correction slips No. 1 to 13
were incorporated and i -terns .I.>R of Chapter- I'R
was also modified.

2.13. In 1960 the Railway Board~Ministry

of Railways and Communication, reprinted the
Schedule of Dimensions 1939.Tile 1960 Schedule

NOTE ON EXTRA CLEARANCE ON CURVES -

l. It has bee.n contended that the extra

1913 and in the 1922 Sch edule of Dimensi ons,
wa s too libe ral in the case of platforms, and
cau sed a gap between the platform and foot-
