Materials:
● Pencils
● Computers
● “When Preparing for a Group Presentation” Anchor Chart

Lesson Sequence:
1. Lesson Introduction
● “Readers, we have been researching, reading, and jotting down notes for a few
days now on our weather topics. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and tsunamis
all affect lives. But, now we need to turn our attention to our presentations. That’s
right! We are going to put on reporter hats and think like news anchors reporting
important information.”
2. State the Objective and Purpose
● “Today, we are going to work with our group members to prepare for our
presentations. When preparing for a presentation we need to consider many
factors such as the additional information we need to gather, the information we
will present, and so much more.”
● “Preparing for a presentation is a skill you will need in fourth grade and beyond;
high school students, college students, and workers use presentations to share
information.”
3. Teach and Model
● The teacher will demonstrate the layers of preparation. She will create an anchor
chart with the students reminding them of specific aspects.
● “Let’s make a chart; a list of reminders it will be that will help us prepare for our
presentations.”
○ What will we present?
○ What information do we still need to gather to be ready?
○ How will we present our information?
○ What materials will we need to present?
○ What will be the order of our presentation?
● The teacher will provide a think-aloud method throughout the process for the
topic of “hurricanes,” but will keep it brief.
4. Guided Practice
● The teacher will call on groups to share their responses surrounding these
questions.
● “Let’s think together about some information your group will present. Who can
tell me what your group will do for…”
○ What will we present?
■ Student responses will vary based upon the topic, but they may list
their weather topic as well as some information on first-hand
accounts, causes, effects, and .
○ What information do we still need to gather to be ready?
■ Student responses will vary; some groups may need additional
first-hand accounts or safety measures.
○ How will we present our information?
■ Student responses may include a SlideShow.
○ What materials will we need to present?
■ Student responses may include a book, SlideShow, projector, and
computers.
○ What will be the order of our presentation?
■ Student responses will vary.
5. Independent Practice/Assessment
● “Researchers, as you head back to your seats, I want you to think about these
questions. Continue to find research as you are reading and share any new
findings with your group members. Remember, just as we read a good book and
share it with our friends, we want to share this information about our topics to
other groups too!”
● “Once your are at your seats, you are going to work on putting together your
presentation and finding out more information that you will need.”
6. Closure
● “How will we be presenting our information?”
○ SlideShow
7. How will you know the lesson has been successful?
● The teacher will determine success based on the student’s level of preparation.
The students will prepare a SlideShow consisting of five or more elements on
their topic. The students will practice their specific elements. The lesson will be
successful if students have followed the guidelines of the anchor chart and created
a SlideShow containing the necessary pieces for their presentation.
