Download the assignment and print. Do all work on the printed document. Work only on 1 side of paper,
add page if needed. Also, read the document Sets.pdf on the website for 5375/7375 for some set definitions.

1. Two sets consists of P D f1; 2; 3; : : :g and Q D f1; 2; 3; : : :g.

(a.) Determine the set
U D P  Q;
where P Q is the Cartesian product of the 2 sets P and Q.
(b.) Let P represent points on the x axis and let Q represent points on the y axis. Plot the points in the
x–y plane.
(c.) Assume the point .3; 4/ 2 U represents the rational number 3/4. Let R represent all rational numbers
in the interval .0; 1/ (open interval does not include 0 or 1). Identify the entries (countable) rn of the set
R D fr1 ; r2 ; r3 ; : : :g.

(a.) Arrange the pairs as follows (c.) All points below the diagonal points which can
be written as
:: :: ::
: : :
rn D .n; n j /I j D 1; 2; : : : ; n 1I n D 2; 3; 4; : : : ;

Take the diagonals, -, so that

2. An urn contains 3 red balls numbered 1, 2, 3 and 2 white balls lettered a, b. The set of red balls is R D
f1; 2; 3g and the set of white balls is W D fa; bg. The total set of objects is S D R [ W D f1; 2; 3; a; bg.
Pick an arbitrary ball from the urn. Now S represents all outcomes of the experiment.
(a.) Find the probability that the ball is red, i.e., P ŒR,
(b.) If R1 D f1g, the set that contains the red ball that has the number 1, calculate P ŒR1 .
Pick an arbitrary ball, note its identity, and replace the ball in the urn and then pick a second ball. Now
the set of events, or outcomes, is S D .R [ W /  .R [ W /.
(c.) Draw a 2 dimensional outcome space using the ball numbers and letters.
(d.) Is the outcome space .R  R/ [ .W  W / [ .R  W / [ .W  R/?
(e.) What is the probability that both balls are red?
Pick an arbitrary ball from the urn, without replacing the ball pick a second ball.
(f.) Draw a 2 dimensional outcome space,
(g.) What is the probability that both balls are red?

P ŒR  R D 6=20 D 3=10.
(d.) Yes, Note that all 4 sets, R  R, W  W , R  W
and W  R are disjoint.
(e.) The set R R (lower left terms) has 9 elements
out of a total of 25 elements. Therefore, P ŒR  R D
9=25.

3. Consider outcomes of 2 tosses of a single fair die, a box with sides numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. After the
first toss, note the number on top of the box. Then toss a second time. The result is denoted as (first toss,
second toss). The set A D f.1; 6/; .2; 5/; .3; 4/; .4; 3/; .5; 2/; .6; 1/g represents the addition of the 2 numbers
being 7 while B D f.1; 6/; .6; 5/; .5; 6/g represents the addition of the 2 numbers being 7 or 11.
(a.) Calculate P ŒA and P ŒB,
(b.) Does P ŒA [ B D P ŒA C P ŒB?
(c.) Assuming the first toss gives 6, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?
Hint: Let C D f.6; 1/; .6; 2/; .6; 3/; .6; 4/; .6; 5/; .6; 6/g, and calculate the conditional probability
P Œ.A [ B/jC.
(d.) Assuming the first toss gives 5, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?
(e.) Assuming the first toss gives 4, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?
(f.) Assuming the first toss gives 3, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?
(g.) Assuming the first toss gives 2, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?
(h.) Assuming the first toss gives 1, what is the probability of an event in A or B occurring?

(a.) The set A has 6 members so that P ŒA D 6=36 D

1=6, while the set B has 3 elements so that P ŒB D
3=36 D 1=12.
(b.) A[B has 8 members so its probability is 8/36 =
2/9, but P ŒA C P ŒB D 6=36 C 3=36 D 9=36 D 1=4.
Answer is No.
(c.) For a first toss of 6, only 2 elements (out of 6)
are in A or B, so that
P ŒEvent in A [ B assuming first toss is 6 D 2=6 D
1=3.
