1st Luitor Paror Intra-University Mediation Tournament

PRELIMINARY ROUND 1

1. Rahul Sharma and Riya Sharma studied in Cotton College, Guwahati. They fell in love
after their initial interactions and soon after their education was complete, they tied the
knot.
2. Riya was the topper of her batch and was a very ambitious girl. She wanted to work after
her marriage but her in- laws did not allow her to work. Riya was not happy with the
decision, but as she was head over heels in love with Rahul, so she decided to comply
with the wishes of her- laws.
3. The first few months after the marriage were almost like a fairytale but after that tensions
seemed to encircle the love birds. Riya was often mocked regarding the fact that she has a
comparatively humble background with comparison to her in-laws. She was told to keep
a distance from her maternal house and also her friends both of whom were an integral
part of her life.
4. After a tumultuous five years of marriage, couple was blessed with two daughters. The
storm overshadowing the couple did not die down with time as Rahul faced severe losses
in his business and used to vent out his frustration on Riya by hurling abusive comments
at her. Riya’s mother-in-law used to taunt her by saying that she could not give birth to a
male heir for the family.
5. Bogged down with all these problems, Riya confronted her husband and told him that
they should have a separate residence for themselves and their daughters. Rahul was not
pleased with her views and negated her opinion by saying that she is a “Witch who has
cast a spell” because of which he is facing losses in his business and she should respect
his mother and father rather than coming up with such vague ideas. An equally furious
Riya retaliated by saying that her “bad phase” in life started as soon as she entered her
Marital home. She said that her mother in- law is the actual “witch” and that she has not
left any stone unturned to make her life hell and that she will burn in hell. Moreover, she
stated that the losses in Rahul’s business were a result of his wrong choices and blunders.
6. Hearing this, Rahul pushed her back. With teary eyes, Riya along with her two daughters
left the house and took refuge in her matrimonial house.
