Abstract
The Indonesian national symbol is Garuda Pancasila with the motto of Unity in Diversity. State
symbol Indonesia is a Garuda bird whose head turns to the right (from Garuda's point of view),

shield shaped like a heart hung by a chain on Garuda's neck, and the motto of Unity in Diversity
which means "Different but still one" written above ribbon gripped by Garuda. It is wise if we
look at the historical record of national statehood of the Republic of Indonesia in particular the
history of the events of the past records, contribute to a child as well as the nation comes from
the
region of West Kalimantan are temporarily forgotten by the history of the
nation, Sultan Hamid II. Actually, with reference to chronological facts of
history can be seen in the work of nationality Sultan Hamid II as the gluing
irreplaceable Indonesian nationalism in the history of this nation, the
memories of the people of Indonesia, and is inherently the name of his native earth; West
Kalimantan.

1. Introduction

The Indonesian national symbol is Garuda Pancasila with the motto of Unity in
Diversity. State symbol Indonesia is a Garuda bird whose head turns to the right (from
Garuda's point of view), shield shaped like a heart hung by a chain on Garuda's neck, and
the motto of Unity in Diversity which means "Different but still one" written above
ribbon gripped by Garuda. This symbol is designed by Sultan Hamid II of Pontianak,
later perfected by President Soekarno, and inaugurated its use as a symbol of the state for
the first time on Cabinet Meeting of the Republic of Indonesia United States on 11th
February 1950.

2. Discussion
2.1 History of the Establishment of the Garuda Pancasila Symbol
The historical side of the country's emblem began in 1945 before
independence, precisely on July 13, 1945 at a Committee meeting Designer of the
1945 Constitution, one of the members of the Committee named Parada Harahap
proposed about the state emblem. Suggestion it was agreed by all members, and
agreed upon to be discussed itself later, in the form of special laws specifically

Sultan Hamid II returned to file the draft image of the state emblem has
been perfected based on aspirations that develops, so that it is created the form of

Soekarno then handed over the draft to the RIS Cabinet through Moh Hatta as
prime minister. AG Pringgodigdo in his book "Around Pancasila" published by
Departemen Hankam, The ABRI History Center said that the design of the state
emblem was made by Sultan Hamid II finally it was inaugurated at the RIS
Cabinet Session on the 11th February 1950. At that time the image of the head of
the Garuda Pancasila was still in shape "bald" and not crested like the current
form. President Soekarno then introduced for the first time the country's emblem
to the general public at the Hotel Des Indes Jakarta on February 15, 1950.

2.2 Description and Philosophical Meaning of Garuda Pancasila


 Garuda Bird
Garuda Pancasila itself is a Garuda bird that has been known through
ancient mythology in the history of the Indonesian people, namely Wishnu's
vehicle that resembled an eagle rajawali. Garuda is used as a Country Coat to
illustrate that Indonesia is a great nation and a strong country. The number of
feathers of Garuda Pancasila symbolizes the day of Indonesia's proclamation
of independence on August 17, 1945, including: 17 feathers on each wing, 8
strands of feathers on the tail, 19 feathers under the shield or at the base of the
tail and 45 strands of hair on the neck.
 Shield
Shield is a shield that has long been known in Indonesian culture
and civilization as part of a weapon that symbolizes struggle, defense, and
self-protection to reach the destination. In the middle of the shield is a
thick black line that depicts the equator which describes the location of the
Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, which is a tropical country

crossed by the equator stretching from east to west. The basic color in the
shield space is the color of the Indonesian national flag "red and white".
Whereas in the middle part it has a black base color. On the shield there
are five rooms which embody the basic state of Pancasila.
 The ribbon with the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika motto
The two Garuda Pancasila claws gripped a white ribbon that read
"Bhinneka Tunggal Ika". The motto of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is an excerpt
from Mpu Tantular's Kakawin Sutasoma. Said "Bhinneka" means diverse
or different, the word "single" means one, the word "ika" means that.
Literally Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is translated "Diverse One That", which is
meaningful though different but in essence it remains a single entity, that
among the various nationalities Indonesia is a unit. This motto is used to
describe unity and unity The Nation and the Unitary State of the Republic
of Indonesia which consists of various cultures, regional languages, race,
ethnicity, religion and belief.
3. Conclusion
The symbol of a country is to have the philosophical and historical meaning of the
nation. Therefore, the shape, color, and parts as a whole have meanings related to the
history of the nation's struggle. The Garuda Pancasila symbol has gone through a long
history so that finally the Garuda Pancasila symbol appears as it is today. The symbol
also presented the Indonesian state's motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" and contained
Pancasila as our ideology. In its use, there are provisions that regulate so that the symbol
is treated as it should to safeguard the sovereignty of the nation and state.
