1.A cooperative society of farmers has 50 hectare of land to
grow two crops X and Y . The profit from crops X and Y per
hectare are estimated as Rs 10,500 and Rs 9,000 respectively.
To control weeds, a liquid herbicide has to be used for crops X
and Y at rates of 20 liters and 10 liters per hectare. Further, no
more than 800 liters of herbicide should be used in order to
protect fish and wild life using a pond which collects drainage
from this land. How much land should be allocated to each crop
so as to maximize the total profit of the society?
SOLUTION
Let
the land allocated to crop X be x hectare and
land allocated to crop Y be y hectare
The above question
Herbicide used for crop X = 20 liters per hectare
Herbicide used for crop Y = 10 liters per hectare
Maximum quantity of herbicide=800 liters
20x +10y< 800
By dividing by 10
2x+y< 80…… (*)
Also
Total land Available to grow crops = 50 hectare
x + y< 50 …..(**)
As we want to maximize the Profit
Hence, the function used here is Maximize Z.
Profit from crop X = Rs 10500 per hectare
Profit from crop Y = Rs 9000 per hectare
Maximize Z = 10500x + 9000y
From the above conditions
2x+y< 80 x + y< 50 x, y > 0
x + y< 50 2x+y< 80

x 0 50 x 0 40
y 50 0 y 80 0

X Y 10 20 30 40 50 60
2x+y< 80 x + y< 50
Corner Points Value of Z
(0,50) 450000
(30, 20) 495000
(40, 0) 420000
(0,0) 0
As the above
table the Maximum profit :
Land Allocated to Crop X = 30 hectare
Land Allocated to Crop Y = 20 hectare
.
.. Maximum Profit = Rs 495000

2.There are two types of fertilizers F1 and F2. F1 consists of

10% nitrogen and 6% phosphoric acid and F2 consists of
5%nitrogen and 10% phosphoric acid. After testing the soil
conditions, a farmer find that she needs at least 14 kg of
nitrogen and 14 kg of phosphoric acid for her crop. If F1 costs
Rs 6/kg and F2 costs Rs 5/kg, determine how much of each
type of fertilizer should be used so that nutrient
requirements are met at a minimum cost. What is the
minimum cost?
SOLUTION
Let
The fertilizer F1 requirement be x Kg
The fertilizer F2 requirement be y Kg

Fertilizer Nitrogen Phosphoric Quantity Cost

Acid
F1 10% 6% x Kg Rs 6
F2 5% 10% y Kg Rs 5
Total 14Kg 14Kg

(10% of x+ 5% of y > 14 )*100 (6% of x + 10% of y > 14)*100

10x + 5y > 1400 6x + 10y > 1400
2x + y > 280 3x + 5y > 700
x>0 , y >0 x>0 , y >0
Minimum the cost
The function used Min Z.
Cost of fertilizer F1 = Rs 6 k/g
Cost of fertilizer F2 = Rs 5 k/g
Min Z =6x + 5y
2x + y > 280 3x + 5y > 700

X 140 0 x 0 700/3
Y 0 280 y 140 0

Y 50 100 150 200 250 300
2x + y > 280 3x + 5y > 700
Corner Points Value of Z
(0, 280) 1400
(100, 80) 1000
(700/3, 0) 1400
As the feasible area is unbounded
1000 may or may not Min Z.
For this, we need to graph inequality
X 500/3 0
Y 0 200

300 A(0, 280)

100 B(100, 80)
50 C(700/3, 0)
Y 50 100 150 200 250 300
6x + 5y < 1000
Since, there is no common point between the feasible region
and 6x + 5y < 1000
Hence the cost will be minimum, if
Fertilizer F1 used = 100kg
Fertilizer F2 used = 80kg
.
.. Minimum cost = Rs 1000
