INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

This study is all about the perception on cause and effect

on internet addiction of the people all around the

world. But in this study, I’ll be focusing on Grade 12

students of BNHS Senior High.

Social Networking Websites is an online service for

people who want social relations to other people around the

world. Social Networking Websites are widely used nowadays

in our developing country. Most social networking sites are

to provide interactions of different people who share the

same interest, likes and even real-life connections.

“Social networking site is said to have begun in 1987 with

Bulletin Board System or BBS. BBs was required to connect in

a modern of that computer and can exchange information

through telephone pole and was the very first system that

allows user to sign in and interact with other people but is

slow since only one user can log at a time”, according to

Miles Walker(2011). It started very slow, long time ago with

6

the usage of telephone pole to connect to others. The very

first version of instant messaging came about 1988 with

Inter Relay Chat, a unix-based limiting access to most

people that was used to link and file sharing and generally

keeping in touch with one another.

Web browser are the program needed to open a website.

Example of web browser are Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera

Mini, Google Chrome etc. Users could type the website on the

web browsers in the upper part that is called Web Address.

Nowadays, Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter,

Tumblr, etc. had been the source of happiness for many

students. It also became a trending topic nowadays and viral

among teenagers. Especially to us teenagers, many of us are

associated to social networking sites, since teenagers must

always be in with what is popular nowadays. Even education

has been influenced by Social networking sites. It is used

for educational purposes.

Most of the teenagers use social media to post things for

popularity or maybe for them it’s just a whimsy. Some gone

viral, but as time goes by, the posts are getting nasty.

It’s questionable why do they do it but after that they’ll

be ashamed on what they did. It also became the way to

7

discriminate and bully someone, that leads to depression and

trauma causes them to drop out and be afraid to socialize to

others.

Objectives of the Study

This study determined the reasons of being addicted on using

the internet specifically, it aimed:

1. To determine those people who uses social medias in terms

of:

a. Those who are always active/updated

b. Those who posts stories in their accounts

c. Those who are known in sites

Significance of the Study

This study would benefit to the following persons:

Future Researcher: the findings of this study will be serving as

a good source of accurate and useful information for them.

Students: this study is beneficiary to all students because it

can help them to know their limitation or control their addiction

on using social media. It also help them to acknowledge some

things they doesn’t know that social media can’t give to them.
8

Teachers: this is also one of the beneficiary because they can

help by teaching those students to realize some things or they

will be the one to make those students acknowledge what are the

things they are missing to know because of relying to the

internet every time they have to do something, especially when

it’s about answering some questions.

The first paragraph is the general statement of the

significance of the study, then the beneficiaries should be

written as follows:

The Academe. Findings of this study will be useful to

the academic institutions like the University of Eastern

Philippines to conduct potential researches pertaining to

coastal and marine conservation, protection, and management.

Information from this study will also serve as valuable

baseline data or reference for future research undertakings.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on the cause and effect of being addicted on using

internet among selected Grade 12 students at BNHS Senior High.

School Year 2019-2020.

9

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical frame work that this study used to discuss

about internet addiction will be Uses and Gratifications

theory. UG theory founded by Elihu Katz in 1959, when Herzog

examined the reasons people use the radio to listen to quiz

programme (Herzog , 1942), and soap operas (Herzog,1944)(as

cited in Katz, 1959). According to Katz(1959), the outcomes

of media usage depend on why and how they decided to use the

social media. Therefore, there are two main components that

discuss in U&G theory which are media that choose to be

engaged and gratification that get from the media(Ruggiero,

2000). By explaining about U&G theory, mainly this theory

works operationally through the social and the psychological

needs for individuals generating motives and expectation of

mass media(Katz, 1959), and how individuals use media to

satisfy their needs and to achieve their goal(as cited in

Patrick, 2010).

Newhagen and Rafaeli(1996) mentioned that U&G theory is

suitable for the internet because internet has something

suitable for everyone, be it information-seeking, inter-

personal communication, entertainment, or escapism.

10

Conceptual Framework

This study shall determine the cause and effect of being

addicted on using the internet introduced as cause and

effect After finding the cause an effect of the said

objectives, we can now give the students the knowledge to

control their self on using the social medias. And we can

also determine the reasons of social media addiction.

Paradigm of the Study

 MOSTLY, IT CAN HELP YOU GATHER DETAILS AND

INFORMATIONS. BUT MAKE THE STUDENTS RELY
ON THE INTERNET ALWAYS.
 MOSTLY, CAN HELP YOU COMMUNICATE TO
OTHERS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. CAN HELP
YOU SOCIALIZE. BUT, OTHERS USE THIS WAY TO
 INFORMATION-SEEKING DO ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES.
 INTER-PERSONAL  MOSTLY, CAN HELP YOU TAKE AWAY YOUR
COMMUNICATION BOREDOM. BUT, OTHERS USE THIS AS WAY TO
DO SOME ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES LIKE CYBER-
 ENTERTAINMENT
BULLYING.
 ESCAPISM  IT HELPS TAKE YOUR STRESS AWAY EVEN FOR A
WHILE OR IT CAN HELP YOU UNWIND AND DO
THE THINGS YOU CAN DO, ALSO CAN GIVE YOU
SOME INFORMATIONS TO SOME ACTIVITIES YOU
DON’T KNOW YET. BUT, IT ALSO ENCOURAGE
YOU TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS BAD.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

For research among academic and military purpose the

internet itself a neutral device which originally

designed.to get information and user friendly communication

medium growth of internet are worldwide. In education also

it is fast and less cost so it is useful tools. Nowadays it

is universal so its increases use by people as a essential

tool for finding information in the world, mainly students

uses internet like source to get information for their use.

There are many studies to found internet addiction among

students or in teenager.
13

1
“Online Social Networking and Addiction—-A Review of the

Psychological literature” study found that Social Networking

Sites (SNS) are mostly used for social purposes, mostly

related to the maintenance of established offline networks.
