Advanced ceramics and nanomaterials for sustainable development
Advanced Ceramics and Nanotechnology are two of the leading and
most relevant topics in science and engineering. The subjects arise from
the convergence of Advanced Ceramics, Structural Ceramics, Electro
Ceramics, Ceramic Processing, Electronics, Physics, Chemistry,
Materials Science etc. and provide answers to many of world's major
environment, energy and health issues. The applications of Advanced
Ceramics and Nanotechnology are extremely important and numerous,
particularly when it comes to its role in electronics, chemical en-
gineering, automobiles, space, healthcare, defence, telecommunication,
information technology, energy sectors etc.
In fact, Ceramics and Nanotechnology are two important technol-
ogies which drive the sustainable developments; one is an ancient
technology and another one is the latest technology. Both are playing
major role in break through developments in advancement of science
and technology. Convergence of this ancient and modern technology
provides right solution to most of the global issues in Energy,
Environment, Health and Space sector for sustainable development.
India's progress in these sectors needs an infusion of new materials
and technology, which we believe can be particularly influenced by
converging exciting worldwide developments in Advanced Ceramics
and Nanomaterials. International conference on Advanced Ceramics
and Nanomaterials titled “Advanced Ceramics and Nanomaterials for
Sustainable Development” (ACeND-2018)” was organized during
September 19–21, 2018 to deliberate the status and prospects in these
important sectors and their convergence. Indian Ceramic Society,
Karnataka Chapter (ICSKC), Christ University and Visvesvaraya
Technological University (VTU) have come together in organizing this
unique event with the support from CUMI, ISRO, ZEISS, BOSCH,
Anderman Industrial Ceramics, Ador FONTECH and ALMATIS as
sponsors beside many other co-sponsors. Christ University has hosted
this event as part of their 50 years celebration.
The Indian Ceramic Society (InCerS), a non-profit organization, was
established in 1928 with the blessings and active support of Pandit
Madan Mohan Malaviya, at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi,
India. Presently InCerS has more than 2000 members including foreign
Members and comprises a wide variety of individuals and interest
groups that include Scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers,
plant personnel, educators, students, marketing and sales professionals
as well as others in related material disciplines. More details at www.
incers.org. Indian Ceramic Society Karnataka Chapter (Erstwhile Indian
Ceramic Society, Bangalore chapter started in 1977) is one of the very
active chapters and has won the Best Chapter Award many times. ICSKC
has been organizing Seminars/Workshops on regular basis, on both
advanced and conventional topics of ceramics and glass.
Experts from around the world and India, representing academic, R
&D institution and industry in Advanced Ceramics and Nanomaterials
area participated in this conference. We believe this event provided a

unique forum for all the delegates to exchange, in person, the new ideas
and experiences in technology developments and thus establish mu-
tually beneficial research collaborations and business relations. The
conference, ACeND was themed as Advanced Ceramics and
Nanomaterials for Energy, Environment, Aerospace, Health and
Agriculture in which leading scientists and technologists in the field of
Advanced Nano Ceramics and Materials Science from India and abroad
presented technical papers on various topics. The technical sessions
during three days, broadly covered Advanced Ceramics & Coating, High
temperature applications, Nanomaterials & Nanocomposites,
Functional materials, Synthesis and Processing of Nanomaterials,
Ceramic and Glass materials, Nano-sensors, MEMS, Environmental and
Catalytic application, Energy applications, Nano and Ceramic materials
for Biomedical and space applications, etc. The sessions included 1
Keynote lecture, 8 Plenary talks, 25 Invited Lectures, 64 oral pre-
sentations and 152 Poster presentations. The souvenir released during
this event contains all the abstracts of the technical papers presented
and the advertisements on products and services in this field hence will
served as a good database for reference. An expo on Ceramic and
Nanomaterials products, equipment's, systems machineries,
Instruments and services was also organized alongside ACeND-2018.
Due to their dedication and hard work of ACeND-2018 organizing
committee and all-round support from ICSKC, Christ University and
VTU fraternity, we could create an international network devoted to
inviting and securing participation of stakeholders from India and
several countries. We are honored to have had the opportunity to work
side-by-side with several colleagues in coordinating this trendsetting
event that will continue to shape and influence our fraternity in many
important areas.
A special issue on ACeND is now published in prestigious “Ceramics
International” Journal with selected and peer reviewed 16 journal pa-
pers of various subjects in line with ACeND theme which were pre-
sented in the conference where ceramics and advanced materials de-
velopment and thorough characterizations are reported for aerospace,
structural, biomedical, optical, magnetic, ferroelectric and energy ap-
plications. The state of art characterizations such as XPS, TEM, na-
noindentation, low temperature DSC etc. were used extensively. The
development of high temperature zirconium diboride and yttrium sili-
cate ceramic while in-depth nanomechanical properties were evaluated
for structural ceramics such as alumina and zirconia toughened alu-
mina. Vanadium oxide based smart and reversible phase transition of
thin films was also studied whereas ferroelectric behavior of Pb
(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 thin film was investigated. Graphene based compo-
sites were developed for anode of lithium-ion battery, antibacterial
activity and cytotoxicity, and glucose sensing and water-splitting ap-
plications. Magnetic properties were explored with lithium ferrite and
neem gum coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Biomedical applications

including drug delivery subjects were also nurtured with nano-com-
posites of Fe3O4 and CoFe2O4 and silver doped wollastonite. Structural,
thermal and dielectric behavior of polymer-CaCu3Ti4O12 nanocompo-
site films were also studied for dielectric materials for capacitor ap-
plications. TiO2 and ZnO based nanomaterials are developed for optical
and photocatalytic application. In this special issue, efforts are made to
cover the relevant and recent developments in the field of Ceramics and
Nanomaterials for sustainable development.
