Copyright and Infringement

Josie Naberhaus
What is it?

The use of works without permission for usage where

permissions would be required

Examples of this would be, taking someone else

artwork, ideas, or music, and claiming it as your own or
making a profit out of it without their consent
Copyright
There are a lot of grey areas for
copyright on art

Sometimes it hard to determine when

something is stollen or inspired

With the world filled with so many

creatives and with the access we have
to the internet an original idea seems to
become hard and harder to come by

There are plenty of cases where people

claim their ideas where stolen when the
perceptions had never even seen the
others concepts
It’s unfortunate
Artist should work together with one

another and help grow and inspire each other

But this is unfortunately not the case

for everyone

There are many cases out their of other artist

stealing, or copying another work

Like a recent even involving Music artist

Aaron Carter who used an artists illustration
to promote his product without their
expressed permission

When confronter Aaron Carter reacted poorly

Aaron Carter
Here are the screenshots of

the post

If you go to his twitter now it is

apparent he has completely
removed the post and the artwork
at this point

Here I have a video where someone

goes over the incident in detail and
Aaron Carters unprofessional
reaction to the artist request

He’s still
doing it
This would not be his first
Offense either

Scrolling through his twitter

there seems to be other

times where he will use
someone else illustration to
promote his work

These tweets where made in

January but are still up on his
account today I took these
screenshots myself
Copyright
Though there are some
cases where it is clear
that someone is in

the wrong thats not
always true

Not all cases, intact a lot

of copyright cases cant
all be so black and white
Copywrite
One example of this is the
case with Katy Perry and
her song Black horse

This song was very

popular and made her
millions of dollars

This song was one of this

biggest hits in 2013
Copyright
Was being sued for
copyright infringement

Marcus Grey sues Katy

Perry for stealing the riff

and beat for his song

Joyful Noise

Though some will argue that

he is trying to own basic
building blocks of music
Copyright
In the end Katy lot the court
case and had to pay him 2.78
million payout

But that was only a fraction of

what she made off her hit song

Here is a video going over

this incident and other in

more detail

In the end there are a lot of grey areas
in copywriting

Its more of a case by case bases

Weather it is morally wrong or not to

steal someone work or repost without
their permission is still under question

Each case can very based on the

judges opinion and the ruling of cases
before it

Its clear in this day and age that art

theft is reaching havoc on the internet
Copyright
With such easy access to
someone else work its not
hard to take it and call it
your own

Which is why it is important

for artist to work together

Rather then act like

competition and trying to
take each other down
“All artists are protected by copyright…and we
should be the first to respect it.”
