Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the overview of the problem and its setting. It includes the

background of the study, statement of the problem, hypotheses of the study,

conceptual/theoretical framework, research paradigm, significance of the study, scope and

delimitation of the study, and operational definition of terms.

Background of the Study

The university canteen is a great place to promote an enjoyment of healthy eating. For students

who use the canteen regularly, the food purchased makes a significant contribution to their total

food intake and nutrition. Therefore, it makes sense to ensure the best food possible is available

to enhance their ability to learn and take in the information presented to them in class. We all

know that most of the students love to eat especially when they are at school. They always want

to be satisfied, majority of the students increasingly suffering from overweight and obesity

because of over eating.

Canteens are important in Universities. It offers a more convenient way of dining for both

students and employees. WUP Food court is located at the front of College of Hospitality and

Tourism Management building. Chaplain Rev. Francis Fajardo led the blessing and dedication of

the university’s coffee shop, commissary, and the stalls and carts of 13 concessionaires. There

are also other food stalls were established around Wesleyan University-Philippines.
Food provided at university has a considerable influence on the development of student's

long-term eating habits, food preferences and attitudes towards food. The university canteen

plays a vital role in promoting healthy foods and creating a school culture of healthy eating.

According to Sare (2019) in How to Run a Successful Canteen Business. In the first

place, many of these canteen consignors award development rights through a bid process.

And it can get very competitive. Of course, in the Philippines politics exists everywhere

even within private arrangements. You can never discount the possibility of collusion between

the administrator and a specific party.

However, according

The main purpose of the study is to know the Status of canteen business in Wesleyan

University Philippines.

Specifically, it aimed to provide answers to the following questions:

1. How may the demographic profile of the respondents be described in terms of;

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Years of contract

1.4 Years of experience in any food-related establishment

1.5 Food Specification

2. How may the Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines in terms of their:

2.1 Strategy

2.2 Food Preparation & Service

2.3 Problems and how they handle it

3. Is there a significant difference between the Years of contract and the Status of canteen

business in Wesleyan University Philippines?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the years of experience in any food-related

establishment and Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines?


Hypotheses of the Study

In light of the foregoing research paradigm and problem statements, this research tested these

hypotheses.

1. There is no significant difference between the Years of Contract and Status of canteen

business in Wesleyan University Philippines.

2. There is no significant relationship between the years of experience in any food-related

establishments and Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines.


Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

The framework follows the input, process and output paradigm. The framework

below shows what is included in input, process and output.

Figure 1 show the input involves the demographic profile of the respondents. Under the

demographic profile are age, sex, years of contract, years of experience in any food-related

establishment, and Food Specification. The respondents will be evaluated the status of canteen

business in Wesleyan University-Philippines in terms of terms of Strategy, Food Preparation and

Services, Problems and how they handle it. The process will involve the instrument that will be

used in the study such as Survey Questionnaire that will be given to Foodstrip staff. This is

necessary in gathering the data needed for the Status of canteen business in Wesleyan

University-Philippines. The Output is t know the Status of canteen business in Wesleyan

University-Philippines

Significance of the Study

This study Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines will benefit the

following:

1. Food Stall Owners. This study will be helpful for Canteen owners in providing insights

and information on how they will manage their stall properly.

2. Researcher. This study will fulfill their course requirement in their subject and this study

will help to know what is the Status of Canteen Business in Wesleyan University-

Philippines.

3. Future Researchers. This study will serve as their future reference and give clearer

directions on how to proceed in conducting similar or related researcher to this study.

Scope and Delimitation


The study focused on the Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines.

This study is limited to Status of canteen business in Wesleyan University Philippines in

terms of their: Strategy, Food Preparation & Service, Problems and how they handle it.

The respondents of the study were the Canteen Staff and owners of Wesleyan University.

This research study was conducted on the second semester of school year 2020-2021 in

Wesleyan University Brgy. Mabini Extension, 3100 Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.

Definition of Terms

Augmentation. The action or process of making or becoming greater in size or amount.

Autonomy. The right or condition of self-government.

Collusion. Secret agreement or cooperation especially for an illegal or deceitful purpose

Concessionaire. Is a person or company that has the right to sell a product or to run a

business, especially in a building belonging to another business.

Consignor. Is a person or a company who gives something up to a dealer to be sold.

Contract. A written or spoken agreement, especially one concerning employment, sales,

or tenancy, that is intended to be enforceable by law.

Demographic. A particular sector of a population

Malnutrition. Refers to when a person's diet does not provide enough nutrients or the

right balance of nutrients for optimal

Prospect. A person regarded as likely to succeed or as a potential customer, client, etc.

Stall. A large table with a small shop with an open front from which goods are sold in a

public place

METHODOLOGY

This part of the research shows the research design, sample and sampling procedure,

instrumentation, data gathering procedure, data analysis, locale of the study.

Research Design

To attain the purpose of the study, the researchers used descriptive type of research in the

study. Descriptive Method describes the particular individual, group or situation being studied.

Descriptive research is used to obtain information concerning the current status of phenomena to

describe “what exist” with respect to variables or conditions in a situation. (Key, James. (1997

Sample and Sampling Procedure

A non-probability sampling, specifically quota sampling, was used to select research

respondents in this study. The quota sampling used in this study is an attempt to represent the

Instrumentation

For the purpose of this study, survey questionnaire was used as the data collection

instrument. This data collection method was used mainly because the researcher could collect all
the completed responses within a short period of time and could collect information from the

respondents who were conveniently available to provide it. Any doubts that the respondents

might have on any question could be clarified on the spot.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers made a letter that signed by the

researchers’ research adviser and approved by the Dean of the

College of Business and Accountancy. The questionnaire was

randomly distributed to the respondents. The data were collected

in a survey of Wesleyan University canteen staff as self-

administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was collected by

the researchers and the results were tallied.

Data Analysis

The gathered data was analyzed by the researchers. It was


being collected by using the responses on the survey
questionnaire from the respondents of the study.

Locale of the Study

This study will conduct inside the Wesleyan University


Philippines, 132 Sampaguita St, Cabanatuan City. Researches will
be gathered a data to the respondents. The respondents will be
answered the given questions to conduct survey. The survey will
be conducted inside the University from Food Court to other
canteen establishments.
