One theory continues that over 3500 years ago people transported huge stones from Wales to
build Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. It would have been an amazing accomplishment, with people
carrying the stones over 200 miles.
It is believed that Stonehenge was built by people who worshipped the sun. In the summer the sun
rises over a particular stone and shines directly onto the centre altar.
For centuries people came to explore Stonehenge and to try to understand its mysteries. Today,
however, it is not allowed to come close to the stones and police guard the area to prevent tourists
from getting too close.

kindly ask you to take part in our survey. We need to find out how people feel about fast food. Please,
answer the six questions. The survey is anonymous — you don’t have to give your name. So, let’s get

minutes or less. The ingredients are prepared in advance and are usually of a poor quality. (Pause
40 seconds)
2. Electronic assistant: Why is fast food so popular these days?
Student: I think fast food is popular because people are very busy and they want something that
they can eat quickly. If someone has to get to a class or return to work, they don't always have much
time to sit down and have a proper meal. (Pause 40 seconds)
3. Electronic assistant: How do you feel about fast food?
Student: Well', I actually like fast food. I think it is tasty, and I also like the fact that it is very cheap.

There are many December traditions in the United Kingdom. One of them is annual pantomimes.
These are plays for children, and are based on popular fairy tales, such as Cinderella or Aladdin.
They have songs, dances, and are usually funny.
Another tradition is sending Christmas cards. People send these cards with holiday greetings to
their friends and family. Some stores even sell them and promise to donate the money they earn
from them to charity.
Christmas is also extremely popular. Children wake up on 25 December and look for presents under
a tree or in stockings over the fireplace or on their beds. Later families enjoy a large traditional
Christmas dinner, which includes turkey, roast potatoes, and pudding for desert.

Halloween is 31 October and is a holiday in which people celebrate the return of those dead souls who
wish to visit places where they used to live. People dress up as witches, ghosts, goblins, and other
scary creatures and go to parties or clubs. Children often go door-to-door and ask for candy. They
ring the doorbell of their neighbours and ask, “trick or treat?” If someone gives the children sweets,
they continue on to the next house to get more. However, if someone gives the children nothing,
they play a “trick” on the person for not giving them what they wanted. This can be something like
squirting the person in the face with water or ringing the person’s doorbell repeatedly and running

the 1600s, King Charles I believed that he had absolute power. The jealous English Parliament
disagreed. They followed a man called Oliver Cromwell, and declared war on the king and murdered

In the UK anyone over the age of 18 can vote in a general election. The country is divided into
regions, and people vote for candidates in the areas where they live. The person who wins becomes
an MP in the House of Commons. Due to the fact that the winner only needs to have one more vote
than his or her opponent, this is called the first past the post system.
The electoral process has ensured that two parties dominate the political landscape of the UK. The

London taxis drivers are known for being the best in the world. While their colleagues in other major
cities rely on their smartphones to navigate, London taxi drivers have to know every street by heart.
To get their license, they have to pass a number of difficult tests about London’s streets, landmarks,
and points of interest. These tests are known as The Knowledge, and every answer must be correct.
Nowadays, London taxi drivers are upset that mobile applications allow for non-licensed taxi drivers
to pick up passengers. They believe that it is unfair that these new cab drivers never had to pass
a single test and accept low fares. It makes it very difficult for licensed drivers to compete.

In the United States just over forty percent of high school graduates go on to university. Although
there are public and private universities, both are expensive for most. Some students are able to
get scholarships, but others are forced to either work part-time or to take large student loans from
banks.
A typical undergraduate degree takes four years in America. It is possible to study at a community
college and receive an associate’s degree in two years, but it has little value.
For their first two years undergraduate students are required to take English, science, math and
history, regardless of their degree choice. When they enter their third year, they choose a major in

In 1848 gold was discovered in California. Within a year about 100,000 people came to the goldmines
to look for the precious metal. Thousands of these gold diggers soon died because of disease and
hard working conditions.
This was the beginning of one of America’s gold rushes. People from all over the world moved to
California in hopes of finding gold. Other gold and silver regions were Nevada and Colorado.

the American-Mexican War. Its name means “the city of angels” in Spanish, as originally it was a
settlement of Christian missionaries from Spain.
Nowadays the city is an attractive place to live in as it has beautiful beaches, a warm climate, and
is next to the Pacific Ocean. However, the inhabitants of the city complain of the high level of air
pollution. The population is about 3.5 million people, and almost all of them drive long distances to

Tired of endless wars and bloody power struggles, the settlers who came to America wanted
a political system that would limit the abuse of power by any one individual. That was why the
country’s founding leaders established a republic which aimed to maintain stability.
The government of the United States was established in March of 1789 with the Constitution of
the United States. The document outlined that there would be three branches of government: the
executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. Each branch was designed as a balance to the other two.
The Constitution has survived the test of time. It has only been changed twenty-six times since

that they can cheer you up when you are sad. The downside to a pet is that you always have to
take care of them and you have to find someone to look after them if you go on holiday. (Pause 40
seconds)
Electronic assistant: That is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
