Exercise 2. Read and translate the text.

When a ship has run out of some spare parts or is short of supplies the Chief Engineer sends a
telex to the agent at the next port of call in which he indicates the spares the ship needs and
the quantity required. This telex is based on the written request prepared by the Fourth, Third
and Second Engineers.

As a rule, the following items may be included into the Fourth Engineer’s written request:
a) impellers for the boiler circulating pump;
b) packings material (rubber, klingirit, paranit);
c) water and steam packings;
d) cocks for the sanitary system;
e) refractory brieks, clay (for a boiler furnace);
f) thermostat;
g) atomizers for boiler burner nozzles;
h) ignition electrodes;
i) bearings;
j) band brakes for winches;
k) oil of different grades;
l) antifouling compound marine;
m) chemicals for water analysis laboratory: silver, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids, etc.

The Third Engineer orders the following equipment:

а) fuel pump for diesel generator;
b) injector for the diesel generator;
c) piston rings;
d) bearings with babbit soldering;
e) air inlet valves;
f) exhaust and inlet valves;
g) a cylinder liner;
h) oil pump drive gears;
i) cylinder covers;
As the Second Engineer is in charge of the main engine his request may include the
following items:
a) main engine piston rings;
b) pistons, cylinder liners;
c) cylinder covers;
d) exhaust valves;
c) oil for the main engine;
f) tools for the ship’s lathe;
g) copper and steel wire of different diameter;
b) ball rings;
i) spares for pumps;
j) cleaning rags;
k) cast iron, bronze, steel and other metals for making spares.

On receipt of the telex the agent sends a reply containing all the necessary information about
the availability, price and terms of delivery of the spares required. On the ship’s arrival at the
port the Chief Engineer sometimes has to meet the ship chandler personally to show him the
samples of the spares he needs and to discuss some problems. As a result of the talks. Several
amendments may be made about the quantity, quality spares with the same characteristics but
from another company, parts of other modification.
A special document called Delivery List is prepared and considered to be an official pass at
the port territory. Some time later the ship chandler brings the bill which must be signed by
the Master, Chief Engineer and storeman.

Exercise 3. Answer the following questions:

1. Who seeds a telex to the agent when a ship is run out of some spare parts?
2. What must be indicated in this telex?
3. Who prepares the written request the telex is based on?
4. What items are usually ordered by the Fourth Engineer?
5. What items are usually ordered by the Third Engineer?
6. What items are usually ordered by the Second Engineer?
7. What information should Agent s reply contain?
8. Is it necessary for the Chief Engineer to meet ship chandler personally?
9. What document is considered to be an official pass at the port territory?
10. Who signs the bill?

Exercise 4. Translate all things that Engineers can deliver (from the text ex3)
Learn the items.
