Introduction
In the last issue, we looked at the dhyAna vidhinirUpaNam from sUta saMhitA. In this
issue we bring the samAdhi nirUpaNam from aShtANgayOga. In this chapter, shri sUtA
explains the various types of samAdhIs for the benefit of the sAdhAkAs . The various
methods of attaining the samAdhi are clearly provided and the very fact that mOkshA is
the result of is stated in very clear terms.
Starting this issue, we intend to provide English translations for some of the key
(tatvArthA) books written by shrI pUrNAnandanAthA. Instead of simply translating the
books, we would be expanding on the thoughts to aid the understanding. In addition, we
would also provide additional notes on how things would be applicable in current
generations and thoughts.
The vasantha navarAthri starts today and rAma Navami also falls during this month.
The rAma AvaraNa and related literature were covered in P1D1. Since we have not
covered bAlA tripurasundarI related mantra and AvaraNa vidhAnAs, we decided to
include them during this issue as vasantha navarAthri is linked with lalithAmbA. bAlA
upAsakAs would know that lalitAmA and bAlAmbA are one and the same.
Wishing you all a wonderful vasanta navarAthri, ugAdi, tamil new year, and vishU.

ÍzÉwrÉÉlÉÑzÉÉxÉlÉqÉç
One of the first books brought out by Shri PUrnAnandanAthA (Vidwan shri G.N.
Venkata Narasayya), shishyA of shri ChidAnandanAthA is “shishyAnushAsanaM”. The
book is an expansive treatise based on parashurAma kalpasUtrA. While this is a small
attempt to provide a translation of that book, we wll also include related information from
the literature.
While the relationship between the Guru and ShishyA was common and known
centuries ago when the literatures were written, in the current modern and fast running
world, the understanding of the intrinsic relation between a Guru and a ShishyA is
mostly lost. While the word Guru is equated with a teacher, a master, an AchArya, a
mentor, a guide etc, none of these words can really convey the meaning of the word
Guru. A Guru is that which we can relate to in a normal material world as the teacher,
master, Acharya, guide, mentor etc and much more.
Only a very few traditions have been securing the true treasure of Guru-Shishya
paramparA to an extent. The sanyAsa tradition forces it as there is no other relationship
apart from the Guru for the ShishyA as the rest are renounced. In the sansyAsa
tradition, the shishyA lives in the same place as the Guru, performs Guru sEvA and
learns in Guru’s presence. Similarly, the shri vidyA tradition also requires the Guru
shishya paramparA with the exact same importance and is followed religiously but does
not have the renounciation and gurukula needs.
Now, how can a common person, who is interested in the knowledge of shri vidyA,
understand the importance of this Guru ShishyA relationship? How can they understand
that Shri Guru is more than what they have experienced so far in their day-to-day life?
To address this need, shrI pUrNAnandanAthA, penned this important book based on
the parashurAma kalpasutrA doctrines. It has been a custom from his days within his
shisya paramparAs to have a new shisyA to read this book to first have a foundation set
and an expectation communicated. From that perspective, this is a very important book
and I am truly grateful to have received the opportunity by the Grace of the Gurus to
provide the same in English with additional thoughts to help people adapt this concept
to the current modern society.
I hope the upasaka community would consider this small effort useful and adopt it for
similar purposes with their shisyAs and this could be one of the first readings provided
to new shisyAs.

Characteristics of a ShishyA
It is important to know some of the qualifications of a shishyA that would make a Guru
even consider taking the shisyA under His wings. The following shlOkAs list those
characters in detail.

Characteristics of Shri Guru
It is very difficult in the modern world to identify a Guru. The literature claims that for a
true seeker, the Guru will come without one approaching. However, in the modern world
where spirituality and Guru’s have become a marketed product, there are indeed
several Guru’s that are knocking the real and virtual world by means of Television ads,
online ads, newspaper blowouts, blogs, social media channels, road side cut outs etc. It
is indeed a difficult situation for a modern day seeker to figure out what is the right
spiritual path to take and how to not fall for a marketed product/Guru. In the sAktA
tradition, lalitAmbA Herself has commanded to keep it secretive. Hence if any person
claiming to be a Guru advertises Himself as a shrividyOpAsakA and markets the vidyA,
he should be shunned. They do not follow traditions and the parampara dharmA and
AchArA are very important in this path of shrI vidyA. Literature also helps us in letting us
know the important characteristics of shrI Guru.
