Unit 18: Storyboarding (LAB)

In my storyboard I have constantly referred to the

conventions of a storyboard in order to make a
successful storyboard. Firstly, one of the main features I
would like to address is the use of the arrow to show
camera movement/direction. This is useful as it is used to
help the cameraman understand the directions needed
while filming in order to follow the director's idea/goal for
the filming of those certain sequencing. I place the arrow
for the camera direction ‘outside’ of the box not to
confuse the direction of the camera with the movement of
characters/objects in that chosen scene.

The arrows that I have placed inside the box is

significant for the characters or objects in the scene
movements only as this avoids causing confusion with
the arrow that is designated outside the box which is
used for camera movement shown above. I placed the
arrow in front of the character specifically and this is
effective as it makes it seem as if he is following the
arrow and it makes it more clear for others to
understand who is moving in the scene.

Camera shot, camera angle, shot duration and shot number are all key bits of
the description when creating a scene in the storyboard. Camera shots and
angles are key in order to give an idea of what the cameraman will be doing
during the scene. The duration give everyone the estimated time to complete
everything for that specific shot. Finally, the shot number is key for everyone
to know the order/sequence in which the shots or suppose to come in.

The sketches I have done for the storyboard were done

in a specific way not only to have a good appeal and
show detail but also make it able for me to adapt and
improve the detail or image if necessary. The drawings I
have done have been drawn very lightly and by doing
this avoids over complicating the picture but make it
easy to erase and improve if necessary without avoiding
ruining the overall image. The technique is light shading
and use of a lot of lines even for the shadow to avoid
the ruining of strong detailing. It is best to use this
method in order to make it accessible for improvements
and also after receiving feedback it will allow you to make improvements which you can then
add in the heavy detail to perfect it.

The description is a key part for the storyboard. It

describes all the senses in the scene (what you can see,
hear, smell, characters feel and what they taste, etc.) It
allows for the director to aware of all things happening
in the shot or keys actions or sequences that

Shawshank Redemption

When designing a shot in the script, a key part of the

drawing that is necessary is the use of shadow to
create dept. This allows us to create a more realistic
look in that shot and also allows a good example of
what the actual sequence, prop or object in the
scene should appear as. In the replicated shot I did I
use a deep grey shading out to a lighter grey to show
the depth of the hole in the wall. This allows the
designers of the set to create a reasonable size replica
of the hole that not only looks real but also the actor
can easily access the area.

The shots used in the storyboard are a key feature that

has to be thought out wisely. There are different
factors that I had to take into perspective when
deciding shot which are:
● The Scene/set design
● The action and moment in the script
The scene design is key as you'll have
to consider the accessibility and
mobility of the cameraman on set. In
the scene there is a small amount of
space and the actor is trying to pick axe the wall
discreetly so a close up was best suited as it was easily able to maneuver the camera to do
this shot and also it creates meaning as the small framing shows how trapped he is in the
prison and the limited time and resources he has which is further emphasized by his rather
paranoid performance and the tiny size of the pickaxe.
