Due: Pre-Class 3/27/2019 Unit 4 Individual Cells & Functions of the Immune System

Assignment Dropbox

In order to prepare for group work and bonus pop quiz that you will complete in class, you should
prepare answers to the questions on this assignment and upload a copy to eLC.
Due Date: March 2, 2019 Pre-class

Type of Immunity: Provide Examples of the cells responsible in the spaces below:
Innate Barriers:
 Skin, hair, cilia
 Mucus membranes
 Mucus and chemical secretions
 Digestive enzymes in mouth
 Stomach acid
Internal Defenses:
 Inflammatory response
 Complement proteins
 Phagocytic cells
 Natural killer (NK) cells
Adaptive Antibodies:

 B cells
Cell Mediated Immune Response:

 T-Helper cells
Memory Response:

 Memory cell

Provide a definition for the following:

1. Antigen: Antigens are the molecules that trigger a response in the immune system

2. Antibody: These are the proteins that are responsible for recognizing and binding to the
antigens

3. Pathogen: an organism that causes disease

For each of the following indicate the jobs they perform for the cell:

4. Antigen Presenting Cell: detects and engulfs antigens and alerts immune system of infection

5. T-Helper Cell: secrete cytokines which induce immune responses

6. B Cell: participate in a chemical response to antigens present in the body by producing specific
antibodies that bind to the antigens

7. Macrophage: engulf, digest, and break down pathogens into thousands of antigens which can
then be digested by APC’s
