Dear All
Life and death have become very real in our
world today and possibly in our very lives. In
the wake of the coronavirus, the world is doing
what it has done best for thousands of years,
searching for answers, searching for hope. In John 11
we read the story of Lazarus. We read of Jesus visit-
ing the Bethany after Lazarus had died. On reaching,
Martha who is the first to meet Him, makes a very
interesting statement, “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus,
“if you had been here, my brother would not have
died. But I know that even now God will give you
whatever you ask.” (John 11:21-22) I reckon most of
our prayers these days revolve around these words,
our belief in God is scaffolded by our hope in His
power over the impossible. “If you choose God, I
know you can do it”. Our belief is subjected to the
results of “if”.
On being assured that Lazarus would rise again, Mar-
tha makes a second statement, “Martha answered, “I
know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last
day.” (John 11:24) Another familiar prayer to many
of us. We believe in the eternal and the unmistakable
power of God’s plan. We know that death isn’t the
end but the beginning to eternity with God. We hope
that our fears will be quenched in the dreams of the
future that is to come. However, Jesus replies, “I
am the resurrection and the life. The one who be-
lieves in me will live, even though they die; and who-
ever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you
believe this?” (John 11:25-26).
You see God wants you to believe in who He is, not
in what He’s capable of or what eternity holds for
you. He is the resurrection; He is the life! period. Let
our hearts be so in tune with the person of Jesus
Christ, that our hope rests solely in the knowledge of
Who He is, Our God. While Martha was vacillating
between the past and the future, Jesus steps into her
present. He doesn’t offer her an answer to her ques-
tions or doubts but changes her perspective
completely.
So, as you ponder over life and the fears these days
bring, Hope not in anything else but Jesus Christ
alone. Be so rooted in His word, and in prayer that
the fears of the world may stop being fears but be-
come opportunities for you to share God’s love with
those who do not know Him. Be the reflection of the
hope you have in Christ. God bless you.
