Audiogram madness!
Everton, Daniel

So I am getting help determining some of the audiogram stuff. I thought I had it down, but
someone in my ASL class who actually is a Speech-Language Pathologist who is more pro-ASL
commented I might be off on what I thought my audiogram said. Thankfully she said she'll sit
down and help me since I've tutored her in history. :)

really? I made them really simple. If you are using any of the how to read an audiogram
web sites, that's enough. Don't over think things. It's week 8 and you should know your
person's hearing loss by now - how to describe it and be onto other things.

I was overthinking things, and I was able to do it myself of course but

confirmation was nice.

Heading into Unit 2

One of the benefits that of interning at Deaf Inc is that it will help me with the whole final
project. I think the stuff I am learning about in terms of resources, accessibilities, assistance, etc
will help with my person/final project.

great....would be very beneficial to ask yourself if a HOH person would seek out Deaf
Inc, why or why not? ;)
Post-again?

I tried doing a post on that blog-type thing. Basically, I processed on how I still had a bit of a
bias against an elderly tutor because he still tries to maintain his hearing. He refuses hearing
aids, and won't learn adjusting techniques, and is oral without the use of lip reading. It's been
frustrated working with him on a number of occassions, none that previously related to his
hearing until most recently when he tried to make an appointment FOR a student (when the
policy is a student has to make the appointment), and he wouldn't wait for an answer. So the
next day he comes in assuming he has that appointment, and we had to explain a second time
why it wasn't made. He was upset, berated me, and said I should "learn how to do your job,
missy".

I remember gripping the pen and just feeling "If only you were a signer, or accomodated your
hearing loss, or something, and I could handle this better. Pick one, hearing or deaf. Stop trying
to be something you're not." That's when it hit me, I was being audist right then and there. I
was judging him, and his hearing loss, because it wasn't something comfortable for me. He has
been denying his hearing loss, and I can understand why. It took me a bit longer to process, and
go through with ways I can try to subtely accomodate him without him being upset, and to be a
bit more understanding and less audist/assumptionary.
