WEEKLY JOURNALS

This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Don’t simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted
your project. What do you need to improve?

Week Two - Research

RESEARCH

What did you learn from your I learnt a lot about short films from my research. I learnt a lot
research? about codes and conventions of a short film and how narratives
can vary depending on the length of the film. I analysed the
equilibrium theory and explained why some films storyline
doesn’t work for a short film. I analysed Kong: skull Island which
follows the narrative of survivors on an abandoned land. I
explained that this narrative wouldn’t fit in a short film because of
the time and the budget. I compared this to my short film idea
and said that it does follow the same guidelines but any more
than 3 main characters would make the film forced and rushed. If
I could improve my work I would talk more about the
background of Tzvetan Todorov to show people how the
equilibrium theory came about in the 21st century.

How has the research for your My research has helped me improve my idea in terms of storyline
medium helped you improve your and camera work too. My film idea has improved but looking
ideas? again at the equilibrium theory my film would have been rushed
if I went with my original idea which was having 3 characters and
two of them die. Also, my camerawork was originally going to be
handheld but after researching into a video on making short films
and 10 unique Gimbal camera movements I discovered that my
film would look a lot more professional and tidy if I had a SC
Ronin Gimbal as I my main tripod. If I could improve I would
analyse more of the Gimbal movements in the video by Parker
Walbeck.

How has the research for your genre Research into my genre has helped me improve my short film
helped you improve your ideas? idea. I researched into the thriller genre explaining how different
genres work depending on the length of the film. I talked about
the standard length film the grey and its storyline comparing this
to a thriller short film suitcase. I explained that due to timing and
budget a thriller storyline can’t have too many characters or
involvements because otherwise the film would be rushed and it
would get boring.

How has researching the conventions The conventions of a thriller genre helped me. When I looked up
of your chosen genre helped you conventions of a thriller genre I considered characters and twists
understand what is required from you as they were useful conventions for my film. I discovered that
in order to meet a distinction grade? having 2-3 characters was probably the right amount needed for
a short film that lasts about 10 minutes. In my short film there will
be a total of 3 characters and it lasts about 8-10 minutes. This
research was helpful. I also researched twists in my convention
research, this was helpful as I have a plot twist in my thriller. The
twist is a death which I think really helps the narrative. If I could
improve my convention research I would analyse more
conventions that were coherent to my genre of film.

How has including a variety of sources My primary research was using survey monkey to gather results. I
(primary and secondary) helped with asked my audience different questions about what they feel
your understanding of your medium / helps a short film flow. I got a fair few responses and these
genre? answers helped me out. People mentioned the narrative as the
most important aspect of a short film. These genres helped me
understand what changes I can make to my narrative in my short
film and how I also could change some camerawork or
dialogue. One thing I could improve would be to end my survey
out to more people to get a greater response.

What sources of information did you I didn’t look at too many different sources of information different
look at that were different from your from my proposed project which is something I can improve on. I
proposed project? looked at different websites and videos on YouTube. An example
of a video would be the Gimbal camerawork movement by
Parker Walbeck. This wasn’t part of my brief but I researched the
video because I wanted to understand different unique camera
angles I can incorporate into my short film. I did this because I
am using my Gimbal to record my film as it helps with sturdiness
and helps the concept of “One shot”.

How will this be useful to your This will be useful as it will help me draw my story boards better.
planning? The gimbal camerawork research will help me understand the
different angles of my film. I will have a variety of angles in my
film but I will be able to draw them from the angle I have placed
my gimbal in.

How has the research for your I have researched into the thriller genre looking at different films.
content/topic helped you improve Some short films and some regular films. The examples were
your ideas? Suitcase (Short Film) and Kong Skull Island (Regular). I explained
that due to time and budget some thriller narratives don’t work for
short films but my narrative was like a short film example that I
found so that helped me generate my idea. I could have
researched into more short films that are One shot to help
improve my knowledge.

How has the research into I researched into Ben Elton and David Lynch Ben Elton is a movie
artists/producers helped you improve director specialising in comedy whereas Lynch is of a thriller
your ideas? director and play writer. I wanted to compare two different
directors to show how I understood my genre. Some of Lynch’s
productions are like my production idea so that helped me
consolidate that my genre was a thriller. I could have put more
research into the background of the two directors.

What work do you need to complete I have completed all my work.

High Grade Tips

Research
● ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information
● ‘relevant & coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media
product you hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning
● ‘sustained’ – continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and don’t just limit it to
the first two weeks
● ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections
