I enjoy teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Teaching is a satisfying task for

me when I see students’ progress and ability to communicate their thoughts and cultures in

another language. By continuing professional learning and engaging with other TESOL

practitioners, I will improve my teaching quality to benefit my students and colleagues.

Role of an Educator

Being a teacher is one of the noblest careers. In my opinion, teachers lay down the

foundation of civilizations. While teaching language is essential to one's literacy development, I

believe that building up students' characters is even a more significant task of teachers. I hope

my students can find joy in learning and share the knowledge and experience of studying a

language; I hope they will work with diligence and integrity in the future. As a result, my

students may contribute to society and their families.

Role of a teacher

As a multilingual speaker, I understand the challenges that come with learning English. I

also know the importance of learning English; it is an international language that is used almost

everywhere in the globe. In order to prepare for a future career, students need to have proficient

as well as to be familiar with the cultures and customs. From my experience as an English

learner, I believe that there are a lot of us want to improve language proficiency; yet they don’t

know how and from whom to seek help. I have a strong desire to be the person students can seek

advice from, so they would be successful in language learning. Given this expectation, I need to

keep refining my teaching skills and knowledge.

Moreover, I believe that a teacher must help students to realize their potential and

capability. In doing so, I apply CLT in my classroom. On the other hand, learners can acquire the
language in an authentic setting. On the other hand, they can demonstrate their knowledge and

gain confidence. Their positive experience will become greater encouragement. Such

encouragements are especially crucial in teacher ESL student. In this authentic and safe

environment, I want to be a couch to assist them along the path of learning. Thus, I can reduce

the stress and anxiety and increase their motivation. If students experience personal problems, I

will be considerable in their circumstances and be able to guide them to seek professional help.

Role of students & my expectation

While I set a high standard for teachers, I also hold high expectations for students. I

understand they may have preferred strategies and approaches to learning. Nevertheless, I will

encourage and expect them to take one step further, trying newer methods and techniques. I want

the students can be receptive and open to new methodologies. As I know, the direct-translation

method is the most popular teaching method in other foreign countries. Yet, in America, many

teachers prefer the CLT method. It requires students’ active participation. Students need to walk

out of their comfort zone. To maximize their growth, I expect students to participate in classes

verbally, mentally, and physically, they can take advantage of studying in an ESL setting.

Growing up, I had never thought teachers are approachable figures. Such belief prevented

me from seeking assistance. Many students may have the same view because of their culture.

Therefore, I want to be a friend, a mentor for the students. Furthermore, I think learning

opportunities should not be confined to a classroom. They occur everywhere, waiting for us to

embrace. If I fail to create a positive classroom environment, I cannot help my students to be

self-motivated. Thus, I try my best to assist them to make baby steps toward their goals.
