General Biology 2: Worksheet in Plant and Animal Reproduction

Name: Harmanjot Kaur Pawar Grade/Sec: 11-St. Peter Date: March16,2020

Note to the student: Accomplish the tasks below by typing your answers from your
computer/smartphones. You can save this as .doc or .pdf then attached it to the Assignment page
where this worksheet is located.

I. Answer the following questions:

1. What is reproduction? Why is reproduction important?
Reproduction is the process of producing offsprings that are biologically or genetically similar to
the parent organism. This process is very important for the survival of all living things, in
maintaining stability in the ecosystem and for the continuation of life on earth. Without a
mechanism for reproduction, life would come to an end.

2. What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction? Give examples of organisms
with each type of reproduction.
Sexual reproduction requires two parents. Each parent contributes a gamete - a sex cell that has
half of the normal DNA of a regular body cell. In males, the gametes are sperm and in females,
the gametes are eggs. Examples are humans, cats, cows, dogs, deer, sheep, monkeys and e.t.c.
Asexual Reproduction in living organisms is the making of their offspring from the cell of only
one parent without the need for the opposite gender. It produces individuals that are
genetically identical to the parent. Examples are Amoeba, bacteria Hydra, Planaria, ferns, Onion
and e.t.c.

3. Define the following modes of asexual reproduction, and give example of organisms exhibiting
such mode of reproduction.
a. budding -occurs when a parent cell forms a bubble-like bud. The bud stays attached to
the parent cell while it grows and develops. When the bud is fully developed, it breaks
away from the parent cell and forms a new organism. Examples are yeast, corals,
Flatworms, Jellyfish, sea anemones and e.t.c.
b. Regenaration-occurs when a parent organism breaks into fragments, or pieces, and each
fragment develops into a new organism. Examples are starfish, crayfish, lizard, Spiders
Sea cucumbers, Planarians and e.t.c.
c. binary fission - occurs when a parent cell splits into two identical daughter cells of the
same size. Examples are sporozoans, algae, amoeba, bacteria, euglena and e.t.c.
d. vegetative reproduction-occurs when multicellular structures become detached from
the parent plant and develop into new individuals that are genetically identical to the
parent plant. Examples are onion bulbs, tubers of potato, runners/stolon, etc.

4. What are the similarities and differences between plant and animal reproduction?
They are similar in some ways like both animal and plant reproduction ensures the continuity of
its species. Both animal and plant reproduction involve mitosis and meiosis in producing new
organisms.
They are different in a way that plants produce multicellular haploid gametes while animals
produce unicellular haploid gametes that cannot reproduce new organisms without fusing with
another unicellular haploid gamete.

5. What is the difference between self-pollination and cross-pollination in plants? Which one do
you think is better way of pollination? Explain your answer.
Self-pollination occurs when the pollen from the anther is deposited on the stigma of the same
flower, or another flower on the same plant while Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen from
the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower on a different individual of the same
species.
Cross-pollination is better than Self-pollination because It allows for more variety and diversity
in the species as the genetic information of different plants are combined. Also the flowers have
brightly colored petals, nector and scent, long stamens and pistils.

6. What is the difference between a unisexual and bisexual organism in terms of reproduction?
When male and female reproductive parts are present within the same individual, they are
known as bisexual organisms while When male and female reproductive parts are present in
separate individuals, they are known as unisexual organisms.
