The 'pioneers' of Indian Sociology during the 1920s and 1930s were not

only exposed to the British and European academic cultures but were also

ce
influenced deeply by the emerging nationalist consciousness_ This is reflected in

their contributions and more importantly in their questioning of the various

ra
presuppositions of Westem Sociology's interpretation of the Indian reality_ For

instance, most of them challenged the validity of looking at Indian institutions

m

from a universal evolutionary schematization nf<glecting its historical specificity

and civilizational depth. Others found serious limitations in attempts to analyse

xa

Indian social structure from an atomistic-individualistic frame of refereru:e which

was totally iru:ompatible with the communitarian-wholisitic priru:iples of Indian

.e

social organization_ Yet others suspected ideological biases in most Westem

sociologists' preoccupation in their Indian studies, with the elements of discretenf<ss

w

and isolation in the social system to the exclusion of organic linkages and systemic
w

bonds_ There was criticism from the 'pionf<ers' generation of Indian sociologists

of most such studies for not being concerned with issues of development and
w

social change, the main focus being on continuity and static socio-graphy_ The

social conditioning of the coru:epts and paradigms of Indian sociology is made

visible in this difference of perspectives on Indian social reality_ It is also visible in

the manner in which the issues of relevaru:e were differently postulated_
