Sensible Heating Process 4

➢ Heating of air without addition or subtraction of

moisture is called sensible heating.
➢ This can be achieved by passing the air over a
heating coil.
➢ Surface temperature ts higher than tdb of air
➢ The heat added increases the DBT of air.
➢ This is useful in winter air conditioning.
➢ The heat added is given by, Qh = ma (h2 – h1)
Qh= 1.022( td2 – td1)

➢Cooling of air without addition or

subtraction of moisture is called
sensible cooling.
➢ This can be achieved by passing the air
over a cooling coil.
➢ This is useful in summer air
conditioning.
➢ The heat removed is given by,
Qc = ma (h1 – h2)
Qc = 1.022 ( td1 – td2)

LATENT HEAT PROCESS-

HUMIDIFICATION/DEHUMIDIFICATION 10
➢ When the state of air is altered along t=constant moisture
in the form of vapour has to be transferred to change in
humidity ratio of air

➢ If a building gains or lose moisture, it is supposed to have

Latent Heat

➢ A gain of moisture will require the condensation of

moisture (Dehumidification ) – Hence cooling load

➢ Loss of moisture – require evaporation of water

(Humidification) – Hence Heating load

Cooling and Dehumidification

Process: 13
➢ Process used in summer air
conditioning : air passes over cooling
coil or through cold spray.
➢ The removal of water vapour from the
air is termed as dehumidification of
air. The dehumidification of air is only
possible if the air is cooled below the
dew point temperature of the air
➢ It is necessary to maintain the coil
surface temperature or Apparatus
Dew Temperature (ADP) of air for
effective dehumidification

Adiabatic humidification 20
➢ If humidification is carried out adiabatically,
the energy required for the evaporation of the
added moisture must come from the entering
air
➢ As the dry bulb temperature of air decreases
during adiabatic humidification process, it
is also known as evaporative cooling
process or cooling with adiabatic
humidification of air
➢ When warm air is passed through a spray
chamber, part of water is vaporized and
carried away with air. This results in
humidification of air

Mixing Process: 22

➢ Mixing of air streams at different states is

commonly encountered in many processes,
including in air conditioning.
➢ Depending upon the state of the individual
streams, the mixing process can take place
with or without condensation of moisture.
