444 No Tramp of Soldiers' Marching Feet

1 No tramp of soldiers’ marching feet 3 What fading flow’rs His road adorn;
With banners and with drums, The palms, how soon laid down!
No sound of music’s martial beat: No bloom or leaf but only thorn
“The King of glory comes!” The King of glory’s crown.
To greet what pomp of kingly pride The soldiers mock, the rabble cries,
No bells in triumph ring, The streets with tumult ring,
No city gates swing open wide: As Pilate to the mob replies,
“Behold, behold your King!” “Behold, behold your King!”

2 And yet He comes. The children 4 Now He who bore for mortals’ sake
cheer; The cross and all its pains
With palms His path is strown. And chose a servant’s form to take,
With ev’ry step the cross draws near: The King of glory reigns.
The King of glory’s throne. Hosanna to the Savior’s name
Astride a colt He passes by Till heaven’s rafters ring,
As loud hosannas ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim
Or else the very stones would cry “Behold, behold your King!”
“Behold, behold your King!”

Confession and Absolution

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father,
beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.
P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C: and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever
offended You and justly deserve Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily
sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for
the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to
be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word,
announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all
your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Gloria Patri (Sung by all)

Prayer of the Day

P: King of Glory, you enter Jerusalem amidst joyful cries, but your heart is set on sacrifice. This day was the
Lamb made manifest before the Passover’s feast and so you made yourself known in the temple, and so you did
not shrink away when the Father sent you to fight for us and die for us, in humility and in innocence upon the
cross. Now may we, with hearts taught by your Word, go forth to serve the world with sacrifice, humility and love
that reflects the cross in all we do. May we never shrink from our purpose or the journey you prepared. As you
rode a humble beast amidst sounds of praise, may we be blessed to sing your praises and bear your name – for
“blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Let each hour of this week, as we draw close to the celebration
of your resurrection be an hour of quiet anticipation, of reflection and true prayer. We desire nothing more than to
be one with you at the cross and in the resurrection. In Christ Jesus we pray these things! ALL: Amen!

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a

The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens
me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught. 5The Sovereign LORD has opened my
ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back. 6I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks
to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. 7Because the Sovereign
LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to
shame. 8He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who
is my accuser? Let him confront me! 9It is the Sovereign LORD who helps me. Who is he that will condemn
me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.
L: This is the Word of the Lord! C: Thanks be to God!
Epistle Reading: Philippians 2:5-11
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became
obedient to death-- even death on a cross! 9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the
name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
L: This is the Word of the Lord! C: Thanks be to God!

Gospel Reading: John 12:12-19

P: The Holy Gospel according to … (we sing in response) C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord!
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord!”“Blessed is the King of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 15
“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”16 At first his
disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been
written about him and that they had done these things to him. 17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called
Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they
had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another,
“See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
