2 Case study of Pre-Production documentation

Avatar

The blockbuster film that I have chosen to use for my A.2 is Avatar (2009). The storyline of Avatar is
when the brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a
mission on the distant world of Pandora. He learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's
intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material
scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs,
Jake gathers the cooperating military unit, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi
people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and
quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his
ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand and fight back in an epic battle for
the fate of Pandora.

Pre-production is crucial before creating the production so that the production is fully created the
way that the pre-production crew have planned it. First, and most obviously, it was a stunning leap
in 3D technology and effects, making for an incredible in-theatre experience that was unlike
anything people had seen in many years.

Storyboards and drafts Production Schedules

This is an example of a real life story board. Unfortunately, I could not find one that they created for
the pre-production of Avatar.

Most storyboards will have justifications of each of the shots

drawn so that the producers know roughly what each shot is
meant to show

Each picture
represents a
shot that is in
the production.
It is drawn out
before so that
the pre
production have
an idea of what
the shots each
time are going
to look like.
The reason why the producers produce storyboards is so that when filming, the producers know the
shot types and plan it out before starting to film. The pictures have to be detailed so that it is clear,
they get detailed artists to come in to help produce the storyboard. Shot types and alternate original
ideas. Storyboards add success as it can help your camera, sound and lights crew understand
precisely where they need to be for the shot. Not only that it makes it easier for them, but it also
gives them a hint of what you expect them to do. In turn, the production process will run smoothly.

Risk Assessments

Avatar undertook human health and ecological risk assessments. Our primary human health and
ecological risk assessment services include:

 Vapour Intrusion Evaluations - is a process by which chemicals in soil or groundwater

 Asbestos Risk Assessment the employer or person in charge of the premises must ensure
that an asbestos risk assessment is carried out. They have to examine the potential risks to
health and identify which precautions are needed to make the work safe.
 Screening Level and Comprehensive Baseline Human Health Risk Assessments - the
procedures required to complete a screening level risk assessment (SLRA) for a
contaminated site. The intention of SLRA is to evaluate whether contamination at a specific
site poses acceptable or unacceptable risks to human health and the environment
 Ecological Risk Assessments & Benefits Valuations - a risk assessment that is the combined
effort of: identifying and analysing potential (future) events that may negatively impact
individuals, assets, and/or the environment
 Radiological/Munitions/Mixed Waste Risk Assessments
 Hazardous Waste Combustor Facility Risk Assessments
 Probabilistic Risk Analyses - risk is characterized by two quantities: the magnitude (severity)
of the possible adverse consequence(s), and. the likelihood (probability) of occurrence of
each consequence.
 toxicology (Human and Wildlife) - Environmental toxicology is a multidisciplinary field of
science concerned with the study of the harmful effects of various chemical, biological and
physical agents on living organisms
 Third Party Risk Assessment Oversight - Third-party management is the process whereby
companies monitor and manage interactions with all external parties. This may include both
contractual and non-contractual parties.
 Risk Communication - refers to the exchange of real-time information, advice and opinions
between experts and people facing threats to their health, economic or social well-being.
The ultimate purpose is to enable people at risk to take informed decisions to protect
themselves and their loved ones.
 Litigation Support - is designed to prepare a lawyer to try a case, including document review,
interviewing witnesses, and case preparation.

Risk assessments are undertaken due to the fact that they have to consider involving heavy
equipment, weather that they need to consider when filming. Risk assessments are needed so that
the people creating the production are safe in the environment of where the production is filmed.
Risk assessments are very important as they form an integral part of a good occupational health and
safety management plan. They help to create awareness of hazards and risks and also helps identify
those who may be at risk (employees, cleaners, visitors, contractors, the public, etc).

Meetings

Before filming, they would have created focus groups so that they could assign the staff for this film
different roles in the filming process so that it is organised. They also would have had meetings
before bringing together the film so that they could all agree if the film is at a good standard but also
give improvements to the film. Production meetings are great for making people aware of sensitive
issues or topics that may arise during filming. 8. Having production meetings is the best way to make
sure that everyone is doing what they are supposed to, by getting everyone in a room together you
can be sure that people know what needs to be done. They contribute to success because they are
organising what needs to be done before starting to create the production as well as throughout
production to so everyone is on the same page.

Scripts & Drafts

Draft script - A workflow for writing your

first draft of a feature-film screenplay. This
article explores a common approach to
screenwriting process.

This is a real life example of a script.

Scripts are the simplest kind of program
file because they have no input or output
arguments. It is created to form the lines
that are going to get spoken in the film.
Scripts are useful for automating series
of commands, such as computations that
you have to perform repeatedly from the
command line or series of commands
you have to reference. A great script sets
up a scene and characters and leads
them through a journey or over
hurdles. ... Placing your call to action on
top of this emotional connection
prepares the script for success

Location Reece

Avatar was filmed in two countries; the USA

and New Zealand. They used these two
locations for filming because it makes the
filming adventurous which fits into the genre of the film. Before agreeing to film at these locations,
they had people go out and take risk assessments and ensure that that was the location that would
suit the filming. The exact locations were the following; Hamakua coast (Hawaii), Playa Vista in
California, wellington (New Zealand), kaua’l (Hawaii). Stone street studios, Hughes aircraft
(California) and Los Angeles in California.

Because avatar is very animated, they use these locations above so that they have the different
settings so that in the film there is different setting throughout to create the story. To conclude, the
different studios are for the green screens to create some of what the production will look like.

They use this equipment to help create avatar for the visual effects, the cinematography creation,
the sound sued for Avatar diegetic and dialogue sounds. It contributed to the success which was
influenced by the budget because Avatar was a successful film where the directors and producers
made such a huge profit so the money they spent to create Avatar was worth it because they made
their money back and more.

From my research, I found out that Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million. ... Avatar
remained the highest-grossing film worldwide for a decade, before being overtaken by Avengers:
Endgame in 2019. It also became the first film to gross more than $2 billion and the best-selling film
of 2010 in the United States. Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie at the international box
office (i.e., not counting its domestic gross), with a take of $2.029 billion compared with Endgame's
$1.936 billion). Avatar won many awards for example: golden globe award for best motion pictures
2010, empire award for best director 2010, academy award for best cinematography. These are only
some examples as avatar has won over 10 different awards for different things.
