Hello Everyone!

My name is Eli Yulianti, I’m an

English teacher for the 4th to 6th
grade in SDN Cihampelas 1.
I have been teaching for 17 years in
this school. I was graduated from
STKIP Bandung majoring English
Education.

THE STATUS OF ENGLISH SUBJECT

IN SDN CIHAMPELAS 1
English subject used to be “Mulok” in previous curriculum,
KTSP 2006. It was taught from the 1st grade to the last grade.
However, nowadays based on the 2013 curriculum, the English
subject is not included in “Mulok”. The headmaster has a
policy to make the English subject as the obligatory
extracurricular. Because it is considered as the important
subject that should be taught since elementary school. In
addition, most of students had learnt the subject since they were
in the kindergarten. Unfortunately, this extracurricular is only
be applied in the 4th to the 6th grade. In conclusion, there is no
English subject even for the 1st grade anymore.
CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS
IN THE 1ST GRADE

1. They tend to move around the class.

2. Most of them even graduated from kindergarten, still have
not be able to read well.
3. They often cry because of little thing.
4. They still want to be accompanied in the school, even in
the class by their relatives.
5. They are easily bored pf something, including a lesson in
the classroom.
6. They are given more about reading and listening first
rather than speaking even writing.
7. They are willing to play first before they accomplishing
the task.
THE SCOPE OF MATERIALS TAUGHT

The first grade of elementary school is given some basic

materials about alphabets, numbers, animals, fruits, and
colours. The quantity of materials given in each topic is
still in the very basic level, for example, number. They
were taught to learn about the number from 1 to 20. The
materials can be understood easily and quickly by the
students if the teacher can provide the suitable method or
learning media related to the topic. In the KTSP
curriculum the materials were taken from the text book
related to the syllabus given by the school.
THE APPROACH USING IN THE CLASSROOM
It is important to have an approach in teaching in order to
engaged the student to be involved in the teaching and learning
activity. The teacher should be gentle in facing the students. Let
them be natural as the children should be, such as when they
want to play or moving around the class.
In teaching activities, teacher should provide the learning
media, such as pictures, flash cards, videos, and songs. The uses
of projector also common to display them all. Besides, students
were also often divided into several groups in some topics.
In conclusion, teachers should make an interesting activity
in the classroom to make the students want to be involved in the
learning activities. Teachers also have to control their temper,
not to be angry with the students, be patient and keep doing the
activities by repetation.
