Chief Boatwright
announces
retirement
Best of the blotter 2010
F
olly Beach Public Safety Director
Terry Boatwright recently
announced his retirement, effective
at the end of January.
Chief Boatwright served the city for
four years and says the time is right as
he nears his 60th birthday, after 36 years
in law enforcement. He heads both the
police and fire departments. A search is
currently underway to find his successor,
and Mayor Tim Goodwin is hopeful that a
replacement will be found before February
without utilizing an interim director.
Goodwin praised Boatwright's service
during his time with Folly Beach, and
both insist the decision is amiable.
Boatwright began his time at Folly
as the interim public safety director in
January 2007, after the retirement of
longtime chief George Tittle. Boatwright's
legacy includes the introduction of county
deputies to augment the city's force, a
move that initially ruffled feathers but has
since proved effective.
A Hanahan native and Vietnam
veteran, Boatwright began his Lowcountry
law enforcement career in 1975. The Folly
Current bids him farewell and wishes him
the best in his future endeavors.

Holiday shipping tips
By Elizabeth Beckmann
W
hile Santa gets the reindeer into top physical condition, his mortal helpers in
the pack and ship industry have geared up for their annual holiday shipping
rush. With the highest expected package volume in recent years, US post and
parcel carriers have braced to support an overwhelming 20.5 billion pieces of holiday
mail and packages this year.
Between the combination of a recovering economy and online retail sales projected
at $21.6 billion, gift shipping this year will reach all time records. Between December 1
and 24, domestic carriers FedEx and UPS will deliver more than 700 million packages to
consumers across the country. Early bird shoppers and shippers have already completed
their gift purchases, but for the procrastinators out there, the last day you will be able
to send out packages for delivery before December 25 is Thursday, December 23; and
that’s at the more expensive Next Day Delivery rate.
FedEx and UPS will all offer next day delivery for Christmas Eve, but the peak day
for shipping volume will be Monday, December 20, so plan ahead. If you’re sending
packages internationally, you’ll need to get your shipments off no later than this date.
Here are some tips to remember when preparing to ship your gifts:
• Ship early. To avoid disappointment, we recommend shipping ground service
packages by December 17. After that, air service is recommended.
• All carriers have size and weight restrictions, but complete information is always
available from Pack & Mail Etc. at 762-0123.
• All items should be packaged in new, sturdy boxes using no brown paper; no
string; no “Scotch”, masking or duct tape; and no newspaper for fragile item
protection.
• Bulky, lightweight items may be subject to oversize charges. Items that are fragile
should be double boxed with at least two inches of packaging between the inner
and outer boxes.
• Consider calling ahead, or shipping to a business address, to be sure someone is
there to receive the package.
• Enclose an extra address label inside the package in case the outside is damaged
during shipping, or the outside label becomes obliterated.
• Utilize carriers like UPS or FedEx who offer the ability to track packages from
origin to destination.
• The professionals at Pack & Mail Etc. are always willing to provide packing
guidance, or to handle the whole packing job.
Elizabeth Beckmann is the owner of Pack & Mail Etc, an independently owned and
operated Pack & Shipping store at 915 Folly Road. December holiday hours for Pack &
Mail Etc are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Saturdays. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and
they may be reached by phone at 762-0123 for special shipping appointments!
